The Worst Sonic Youth 3 Albums In A Row?

What was their big lull then? (Fuck this is tough....but....)

Goo-Dirty-EJST+NS

But I fuckin like those albums. I just don't adore that 3 album stretch as a whole.

Jeremy 06.07.2009 01:34 AM

I agree, it would have to be Goo/Dirty/Jet Set.

~Jeremy~

automatic bzooty 06.07.2009 02:07 AM

none of them!

well, maaaaybe that one, because it includes jet set. which is good by most means, but not like, super good by sonic youth standards.

eternal 06.07.2009 03:02 AM

dirty/jetset/washing machine

yeah, i know i'll get yelled at for including WM, but that album doesnt do much for me at all compared to other SY albums (besides the diamond sea).

blunderbuss 06.07.2009 03:05 AM

EJSTNS/WM/ATL

Some great songs of all of them, but a fairly high crud level too.

HECKLER SPRAY 06.07.2009 03:46 AM

Murray Street - Nurse - RATHER RIPPED
Nurse is ok, but I can't get into the 2 others.....

Death & the Maiden 06.07.2009 04:04 AM

Goo, Dirty, and Washing Machine are three that I don't think are very good. So it's either Goo - Dirty - Jet Set or Dirty - Jet Set - Washing Machine for me. But that doesn't seem right, because Jet Set is my favourite of theirs from the 90s. And I still haven't heard ATL, NYCG+F, and RR.

to.w 06.07.2009 04:22 AM

impossible

Anyway, everybody knows it's goo-dirty- jet set

cleveland 06.07.2009 05:37 AM

sonic death, bad moon rising, made in usa.

I´m not into the early stuff...

demonrail666 06.07.2009 06:31 AM

Dirty->Jet Set->Washing Machine

greedrex 06.07.2009 07:45 AM

I'd say this too, although it's really hard because I still LOVE all three of these albums.

The Earl Of Slander 06.07.2009 12:02 PM

Well, althoug h I still love them, my least favourite two are Jet Set and Washing Machine. Dirty and ATL are both records I'd feel bad about including, so that makes it difficult...

Ah, screw i Jet Set - Washing Machine - A Thousand Leaves.

As much as love parts of ATL, I just have more of a personal love for Dirty (it's damn close though). Anyone who includes any of the 80s albums in this is being stupid.

mil_pl 06.07.2009 12:25 PM

huh?

Yeah, I know, I'm french.
But I take it as a compliment.

Seriously, Rather Ripped is their worst LP. It deserves to be in a worst SY albums list.

As true as that is, both Murray St and The Eternal are excellent.

SuperCreep 06.07.2009 02:12 PM

That's like asking me which of my testicles I want to cut off.

I didn't put the Eternal on my list, I put Nurse.
Murray Street ? Well, sorry dude, I don't like it. Too mellow for me....

sarramkrop 06.07.2009 02:44 PM

The only 2 I don't like are Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped. Rather Ripped has got only one good song on it (Reena), and Sonic Nurse too (I Love You Golden Blue). The rest is terrible, especially the songs on Rather Ripped.

canabero 06.07.2009 02:45 PM

Rather Ripped
EJSTNS
The Eternal

mil_pl 06.07.2009 03:05 PM

i can put only two albums..

HaydenAsche 06.07.2009 04:02 PM

This board has the most absurdly random questions asked on such a daily basis and even though they may be ridiculous things to ask, we've all answered them over and over.

Oh, and the correct answer to this question is Nurse on.

StevOK 06.07.2009 08:30 PM

The early ones.

b. Oh, and the correct answer to this question is Nurse on.

a. Sorry. I haven't been here very long and I never knew this question was asked already. But, it's NOT absurd. I want to know what people think would represent a "lull" for Sonic Youth, and 3 albums in a row is my criteria for that. Sue me.

b. So, Nurse, Ripped, Eternal huh?

Screaming Skull 06.08.2009 03:33 PM

My opinion won't be popular around here, but its my opinion nonetheless...

A Thousand Leaves
New York City Ghosts & Flowers
Murray Street

ATL and NYCG&F are no-brainers for me, personally. Then its a question of whether you include Washing Machine or Murray Street...two albums I happen to LOVE! I actually think Washing Machine is in SY's all-time Top 5, so my response is ATL, NYCG&F, and MS. I'm still not sure why there's a love affair with ATL and NYCG&F around here, but to each his own...

guitarpro 06.08.2009 03:51 PM

What a stupid fuckin thread :) lol.

jon boy 06.08.2009 04:03 PM

sonic nurse , rather ripped and... i still have not heard the new one yet so i cant comment but those two are plain awful.

the ikara cult 06.08.2009 04:57 PM

ive always seen Sonic youth as a band who do albums in cycles of 3, so my least favourite is probably Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves, NYGNF. even though i like alot of the songs. Washing machine is massively overrated.

GeneticKiss 06.08.2009 06:08 PM

This is a trick question. Sonic Youth have never put out 3 bad albums in a row.

sonikjuice 06.08.2009 07:52 PM

Washing Machine
A Thousand Leaves
NYC Ghosts & Flowers

Not "bad", but "worst".....a relative thing. The Beatles had a worst song. Godard has a worst movie.

Fuck, I'm regretting this thread, hahahaha.....

choc e-Claire 03.24.2019 06:28 PM

Leaves, NYCG&F, Murray St (I'm sorry Murray St)

NYCgaf16 04.29.2020 07:09 AM

Firstly, that's a shocking three albums to choose as worst. Listen to less Mac Demarco and more of those three albums. Secondly, it's three albums they put out in a row. For me it's Thousand leaves (only one great song on it), NYC ghost and flowers (only none great songs on it), and Murray Street which is an album I actually really like but hey, that's the list.

Any other three albums is just wrong.
