They were talking about this on NPR just as I was reading the article. wierd

radarmaker 03.18.2010 07:37 AM

Fuck.

Bertrand 03.18.2010 08:18 AM

Damn!
He was younger than I thought; no age for passing.
He made beautiful music and had a fine fine voice.

Genteel Death 03.18.2010 05:10 PM

I only know two songs by them (September Gurls and Holocaust), and they didn't really live up to all the ''legendary band'' talk I've always heard about them. Is there an album that merits a listen, and why?
Oh and RIP.

Thirteen is superb. If i could write a song as lovely as that I would be able to rest easy myself. Ive not explored Big Star beyond that despite being well aware of the name for the the best part of 10 years. Perhaps nows the time to do so. RIP

Pax Americana 03.18.2010 08:35 PM

Heard about it this morning. Sad. I always loved his vocals. RIP.

As a a black-hearted cynic and angry human being, this song makes me lay down my arms every time.

I'd recommend any of their original three lps but if you're not that into either September Gurls or Holocaust I doubt you'd be that into the albums.

Anyway, RIP. I think I'll go off and listen to Sister Lovers now and have a little cry.

Dead-Air 03.19.2010 12:01 AM

I've been shaken by this severely all day. Alex wrote songs I wished I could have had the ability to write. Sister Lovers is the best Velvets third album influenced record ever and genius in it's own right. Live in London is a brilliant fucking noise rock album years before the genre came into being. He was arguably my favorite pop song writer in many ways, not to mention the garage rock stuff he did with the Cramps and Panther Burns.

I'd been religiously listening to a comp of his best songs all week long, so the news struck doubly hard. My ex who'd been in the car yesterday when I was playing it texted me the news this morning all weirded out.

First Lux, now Alex. Such a sad recent stretch for rock music.

Messrs. Chiltern and Bell are and will be sorely missed. At least the old team is back together again. R.I.P. gentlemen.

demonrail666 03.19.2010 12:57 PM

It took a while to sink in but I think I feel worse over this than I did about Lux Interior. That was more just shock, this somehow seems sadder. It feels closer for me to the death of Grant McLennan. Two musicians who deserved far better rewards for their talents than they ever received during their lifetimes.

This sucks i had just come around again to Mr.Chilton's first solo album Like Flies on Sherbert (I knew westerberg loved it) that has him with arudimentary punk band fronting material he wrote on an eternal bender. It's got a fucked up charm that I know can be appreciated here.
