beat happening

Well i got Jamboree, a while back. Took me a while to get into it...but shortly really liked it. Crashing thru, Hangman ("make peace with yrself" lol), Indian Summer - its a really good album, a cross between Sonic Youth and The Screaming Trees id say. Then...after hearing Sub Pop 200, i loved the tune Pyjama Party In A Haunted Hive....so fucking much - its so fucking 'psychee'. So yea then i got Black Candy....(SY do a great cover of 'Black Candy' by the way)....which is much more gloomy than jamboree. Gotta love the Neo-hippie-psychedelic tune Other Side....ahh:) . Then only recently, i downloaded Dreamy which... oh man, this album has realy really hit me. Its more developed and sustained than their previous records. Lisen to the songs Me Untaimed and Fortune Cookie Prize, Ive Lost You, Cry For A Shadow.....Ive instantly fell in love with Dreamy. Who else likes the Beat?

Love the beat happening. Not sure if I see the SY/Screaming Trees influence, but they did do a split with Screaming Trees. I see VU as being a big influence. Thurston & Kim(w/ Epic) version of Black Candy is "epic"(ha!).

Black Candy & You Turn Me On are my 2 favorites of theirs, but love all their albums.

Criminally overlooked during their existence. It's a shame when great bands like Beat Happening put out some incredible music that ends up being slightly ahead of it's time(style-wise).

How many people have covered INDIAN SUMMER??? Luna, Spectrum, Eugenius off the top of my head.

There was a pretty cute band in the early-mid 90s called TIGER TRAP too.

Their influence was their charm.

Are any of the covers good, or are any of the bands good? All the bands are excellent and all the covers are really good, but I might have to say my favorite of the covers is Luna's version, something about Dean's voice.

Urusei Yatsura did a cover of Bewitched on the b-side of Fake Fur. Urusei Yatsura also come very highly recommend by me.

Try to pick up "The Shield Around the K" DVD. You'll like Beat Happening even more-- at least I did.

krastian 04.15.2006 02:36 PM

I like them, but I can't listen to them that often.

Ya know, I honestly respect Beat happening for everything that they did to promote new and different types of music and pushin the indie rock aesthetic. They have had an incalculable influence over the genre's life and have helped redefine what is acceptable as "punk rock". But in all honsety, I don't really like their music. I find it kind of boring and a little bit annoying. I'm not going to insult the band, I resoect them too much. But is anyone else with me in thinking that they were just not very talented musicians?

No, I don't think they were that talented skillwise, but made up for it by creativity.

PunkerViolence 04.16.2006 10:07 AM

I think you maybe refering to Calvin's voice?? I used to dispise his dreary moany voice....but it took time to get used to it....for me anyway. The music is very very basic....but like khchris said above...what they lack in skill....they made up for in creativity. Its true.

How can you not love Calvin's voice!

Calvin is the man.

Loved his remix of JSBX's "Typecast". That was the most incredible of all the JSBX remixes.

atari 2600 04.16.2006 09:49 PM

they're okay & Calvin is a cool-sounding singer

they abuse the G-D-C & also the moveable barre chords pretty fucking awful though. funny, that's the same criticism that people use against Nirvana. At least they played more sharps & flats & varied it up a bit more. I mean Lou Reed & Neil Young write a lot with G, D, & C major too, but they know how to make a real song. overall, I agree with Krastian's assessment of Beat Happening.

Everyneurotic 04.16.2006 09:51 PM

i'm all about their debut

took me a little to get into them though

Hey, i said it took me time to accept his voice. I think his voice is.....i wouldnt say amazing, or spectacular......but unique - definately unique. Sometimes i think he struggles to stay in key, but thats all part of his style. it suits the beat happening style.

hotbutterknives 04.17.2006 01:43 PM
