LLAMADAS TELEFONICAS by ROBERTO BOLAÑO

Early short-story collection by the author of 2666 features characters in loose or unexistent or uncertain plots; one can feel the influence of Raymond Carver or the Salinger of Nine Stories. Yet Bolaño doesn't strive for realism: his bizarre creatures face situations that often push the imagination without becoming fantastic. These characters are born of borrowed literature as much as everyday experience or history-- alongside many films the characters watch while we in turn watch them, the specter of political genocide in South America is a constant presence in these uneven but haunting dreams of doomed relationships and people. SWEET & LOW DOWN last thing I watched before I went to bed this is going to be hard

In this film written and directed by Woody Allen, Emmitt Ray was the main character. Sean Penn portrayed the egotistical, alcoholic 1930’s jazz guitarist. Emmitt was the best he claimed, except for Django Reinhardt…a gypsy from Europe. He met a mute and friendly girl named Hattie who quickly falls in love with him. He soon ditches her and jumps into a marriage with a seductive writer played by Uma Thurman. She soon ditches him for a gangster. He begins to see the error in his ways as he cannot find a woman that would love him as Hattie did. End.

this kind of thing is not my forte - but here's a review of the last book i read.

John Fante - Ask the Dust

Semi/pseudo-autobiographical account of the writer Arturo Bandini trying to make it in LA. His trials and tribulations trying to get laid and find something to eat smack heavily of Orwell’s down and out in Paris and London, published six years before. In turn Fante is ripped off heavily by Bukowski, who, to his credit, admits as much in the introduction. Ask the Dust is a good read, but it definitely goes down what feels like a well trodden path. The ending is over-dramatic and unrealistic, detracting from the rawness of the body of the book, spoiling it.

100.

Illuminatus Trilogy - Robert Anton Wilson & Robert Shea

Too long. Too complex. Too disjointed. Too dense. Too frivolous. Too serious. Too funny. Too correct. Too PERFECT. Nothing has scrambled my brain more than reading this book. LOVE IT.

Wetherspoons breakfast (large)

Wetherspoons' 'large breakfast' (served everyday 'til noon) consists of two fried eggs, two rashers of bacon, two sausages, baked beans, three hash browns, two slices of toast and a grilled tomato, as well as a choice of either black pudding or a large flat mashroom. At £3.99 the breakfast offers excellent value compared with those served in a number of other chains pubs. Wetherspoons itself might not provide the most inspiring of dining environments but, as a convenient and reliable refuse for a single man, looking to break their fast in depressing solitude, it's a significant step up from Starburger.
