classic albums, atsonicpark edition # 49: sir richard bishop - salvador kali

SIR RICHARD BISHOP "SALVADOR KALI"
1998, Revenant Records

This, the first solo album by Sir Richard Bishop, is a bit different than the rest of his solo output, and it was recorded many years before any of his acoustic-only albums that everyone's grandmother loves now. It's also his best and in my opinion one of the best records of all time -- so full of life, creativity, energy; it sounds like he had been writing these songs his whole life. Just amazing. Most are acoustic based, many with multilayered acoustic parts, though the stand out track is a 12 minute piano piece.

Amazing AMAZING album. I love it to bits. Great choice.

batreleaser 10.24.2008 05:53 PM

"while my guitar violently bleeds" is better, though it might just be because of that amazing title.

Derek 10.25.2008 06:03 AM

this album is the best from his solo output! I like While My Guitar Violently Bleeds but it's not something AMAZING like this.

atsonicpark 10.25.2008 06:59 AM

Yeah, this album is so diverse.

I heard he's going to go back to diverse compositions... he released knucklehead freefall this year which shows more range than his last few solo outtings (as did polytheistic fragments, actually), and he said it's a "sign of things to come". I'm curious, since he has done experiments with electronics lately as well for the soundtrack to his film goddamn religion..

jimbrim 10.25.2008 07:12 AM

I'm listening to it for the first time right now, good stuff.

atsonicpark 04.12.2009 05:57 PM

So, his new one DID come out. And I love it. But... it's not as good as this!

That song "hadley" on this.. damn!

Derek 04.12.2009 06:08 PM

Nothing is as good as this.

batreleaser 04.12.2009 10:50 PM

revenant rules. the ayler holy ghost box is the best boxset ive ever seen/owned.

dionysusundone 04.13.2009 02:18 AM

Cool I've been meaning to check out this guy's stuff. I'm not as up on this stuff as Batreleaser or atsonicpark but I generally trust their tastes. I do love that album title.

great album.

I love it so much but I still haven't heard any sun city girls (their large discography kind of intimidates me)

& has anyone heard Rangda? it's ben chasny, bishop & chris corsano but I've only just read about it

atsonicpark 02.01.2011 03:24 PM

yo dom, search for rangda on here, there are 3 threads for them I think. I'm a huge fan of bishop and it's the only album I've heard by him I don't like!

As for SCG, to be honest, none of their albums are as good as this one, or Alvarius's "blood operatives of the barium sunset". Still, I'd reccomend getting a few. Most people either stop after a good handful of 'em, or they become addicted and want to get all 130. I have everything they've done, so I'm one of the addicted ones! Haha. Definitely get DANTE'S DISNEYLAND INFERNO, TORCH OF THE MYSTICS, HORSE COCK PHEPNER, FUNERAL MARIACHI, BOX OF CHAMELEONS (it's a 3 cd/128 track collection that has little snippets of EVERYTHING they've done; like, it has prank phone calls, spoken word stuff, improv jazz workouts, folk songs, punk songs, gamelan songs), and of course 330,000 CROSSDRESSERS. A few things to understand is that they don't really have a "sound". I think GUM ARABIC is a great place to start out...

there it is in 320, it's 106.4mb. It's kinda like a "greatest hits" of all their more straightforward, conventional Middle Eastern stuff. Really, it's one of their best albums if you're just into the more straightforward stuff, and it's also the sound they are most known for, besides a jazz improv power trio thing they like to do (which sometimes resembles, oh, NNCK). Enjoy.

TheDom 02.01.2011 03:28 PM

oh cool thanks for the link!

I think I've heard dante's disneyland inferno (in the middle of my 'listen to every album mark prindle have 10/10 phase) but I don't even remember what it sounds like... I'll check em out soon thanks

(& I totally forgot about NNCK & how great they are)
