MTV is turning the US into a cultural wasteland

Discuss.

Danny Himself 01.20.2007 03:05 PM

'Super Sweet 16'? What the fuck is that?

I saw a kid on it once who wasn't 16. Jeez, MTV- what next?

CHOUT 01.20.2007 03:17 PM

I think most of the older 'demographic' who remember when MTV used to play videos don't even bother with it at all anymore. But those poor kids and their 'give me plastic surgery to look just like Brad Pitt' shows...

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.20.2007 04:21 PM

MTV is the opiate of the masses. There are a lot of 20 somethings who are lulled into the sheer idiocy, but even more teenagers who are. And if you turn on MTV2, those videos are pure garbage.

There are people who are totally brainwashed by it though, who think that life should all be about promiscuouty, drugs, and money. No appreciation of art or wisdom or any intangibles. It is really disgusting. If and when I have kids, I'm probably going to block out MTV as well as probably Nickelodeon (just because Nickelodeon has becomed so dumbed down.)

Anyone remember when television was intelligent? When you could turn on TLC or the Discovery channel and not see bullshit? Now all the educational programming is no longer on basic cable- now you gotta go to Discovery Science, which is on expanded cable or whatever.

Oh, and Comedy Central has gone waaaay downhill. They have so much good original programming that they cancelled, and now they show MAD TV reruns? And the Daily Show and Colbert Report 5 times a day? And Blue Collar TV? That should be on CMT. And 4 episodes of scrubs a day?

Don't get me wrong- Scrubs is funny, and so is the Daily Show and the Colbert report. But they should only be on once a day. Comedy Central should be split into like 5 different channels- News, Stand-up, movies, originals, and sketch comedy.

Cartoon Networks been going downhill too. Adult Swim has been boring as of late and the daytime programming is abysmal.
Cartoon network is split into 2 channels: Boomerang and Cartoon Network- but it should really be like:
Cartoon Network for 12 year olds, Adult swim, anime dorks, classic cartoons, and crappy cartoons that were made in the 60's that currently take way too much time away from classic cartoons on Boomerang.

Although it is probably a good thing that TV programming is such shit. Otherwise I'd be glued.

noumenal 01.20.2007 04:26 PM

I don't know anyone who watches MTV, but I'm sure they're out there.

About Comedy Central: MadTV is the worst program in the history of television, followed closely by The Mind of Mencia. Blue Collar TV isn't very funny, but I don't find it actively annoying. And who can blame them for going after the Jeff Foxworthy cash cow?

CHOUT 01.20.2007 05:02 PM

The last mtv thing I liked was Daria, it was a pretty good cartoon. It's funny cuz her sis on the show Quinn was a perfect example of how the average mtv watcher is viewed, and Daria was quite the opposite.

I rarely watch tv at all myself, I try and occupy my time with other things, so I'm not too up to date on all the crappy shows.
If I watch tv it's either VH1 classic or forensic/crime shows, but not the fictional ones - I love forensic files, cold case files etc.

Danny Himself 01.20.2007 06:05 PM

I used to tape Daria off the TV. VHS, man. Old school.

TheDom 01.20.2007 06:14 PM

No show pisses me off more than My Super Sweet 16.

LifeDistortion 01.20.2007 06:25 PM

MTV hasn't been in years, actually I sometimes watch The Tube, which is a new 24 hour music video channel that is actually pretty decent. They tend to play a lot more older stuff though but I suppose that's alright. MTV is not even worth mentioning, its not like this new, ever since TRL became SO popular it totally changed the programming at MTV, its become so much more for Short Attention Span viewers then ever before. It has nothing to do with music and all about that 12-15 year old demographic. Watch in the next few years they will be the new Cartoon Network, but not of the Adult Swim variety but of the 1st grade to fifth grade variety. I've already stated how I think Cartoon Network sucks, any network that starts out as a cult following always get corrupted once it gets popular, Cartoon Network today is not the Cartoon Network of even five years ago, and that's sad.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.20.2007 11:05 PM

I have to admit that Jackass is an awesome show, but that's been around for a long time.

I have a few friends that will partake in that sort of stuff out of sheer boredom.

atsonicpark 01.20.2007 11:12 PM

What's MTV?

Inhuman 01.20.2007 11:18 PM

MTV is a waste of time. It fills your mind with unimportant stories about "Who's going out with Hulk Hogan's daughter". It's not even about the music anymore at all. They should just play different shows based on genre's, scenes, and time periods, with beavis and butthead once or twice a day. I keep the TV off; most of it is trash anyway. I'd rather spend my time reading or surfing Wikipedia.

Insert mindless agreeable discussion here.

sellouteater 01.21.2007 03:13 AM

sellouteater 01.21.2007 03:24 AM

Anngella 01.21.2007 03:28 AM

Haha that's funny. I thought that I was the only one that surfed cable TV and looked for 20 seconds of arousing footage when I was 12. Well no I didn't think that, but I still find it funny when people admit to it.

And the fuzzy porn channels~!?
Aaaaand sometimes Howard Stern. Like when he had orgasm girl on.
There's not much I won't admit to :)

jon boy 01.21.2007 02:48 PM

ok i thought the us already was a cultural wasteland before mtv. mtv which doesnt actually show music much anymore.

Alex's Trip 01.21.2007 03:01 PM

I watch too much TV, but no MTV.

Shows that I watch:

The Office
My Name is Earl
30 Rock
Scrubs
Lost
Desperate Housewives
Conan O'Brien
Heroes
Assy McGee
Beauty and the Geek (very funny reality show)
The Apprentice (Trump is always good for a laugh)

And sometimes I watch these things because my family watches them and I used to watch them with my family:

Survivor
The Amazing Race
American Idol
What else is there...

My friend made me Tivo 24, recently. So I might start watching that.

SynthethicalY 01.21.2007 03:03 PM

MTV last great show was Daria. That was it. Also this is just one factor of many that is making the U.S. into a cultural wasteland.

Danny Himself 01.21.2007 04:56 PM

I watch Fox News all the time. I'm serious, it's the funniest thing on TV. I watch the Fox Report with Shepard Smith early in the morning before I go to school. Fox and Friends is pretty funny too, because none of them look like they know what's going on and they have Kung Fu instructors on discussing the latest scandal at Disneyworld. I love it.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.21.2007 05:58 PM

its a shame. the so-called "generation next" to which we 16-30 year olds share, seems to base itself entirely on MTV and the like.

Malachi_Constant 01.22.2007 02:50 AM

What's new?

But seriously, everything that's been stated in this thread, I was preaching from the rooftops at 15. Till my lungs burned. World's still turning. Got to see those boy-bands die out. That was cool. Their simpering corporate refuse still clots the brain-tricles of our young, but whatcha gonna do? Complain more? Or take some sort of (arguably pointless) action?

!@#$%! 01.22.2007 02:52 AM

old fucking news

old fucking news!!

oldddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 02:54 AM

Are you calling me old, I need my glasses I can't see.

but, anyone that would want to partake in this debate probally is highly unaware of the vast world of great music that exists beyond mtv...in the US.

the united states has a history of many great, as well as many shit scenerios. its a cultural melting pot, meaning that people from all over the world have moved here (in the past, as well as presently). theres much to work with...and as a result of all this culture and history many great movements have been started here. many "underground" movements have started here.

wanna talk about mtv? how about discussing the blues that came out of the south oh so long ago that went on to become rock n roll? how about punk rock? no wave? new wave? free-form jazz? what about all the avant/free-form/noise/whatever the fuck ya wanna call it thats been going on, and is REALLLLY going on now?

fuck mtv.

if ya see brittney spears, and ya interpret that as american music...then yr very shallow.

japan sure as hell has its fair share of shit pop...as well as EVERY FUCKING OTHER COUNTRY.

last i checked mtv is pretty popular in several places throughout the world.

lets think about other shit though man...seriously.

It's not just music. It's this whole mass produced global culture... or "Globo-Corp" as I like to call it. The kids just don't know any better. Can't even dream of a world without Madonna or Axe Body Spray.

I'd ramble on, name a whole lot more in the way of mindless bullshit, but that would be a waste of my time and energy. So, I say...

Fuck 'em.

Fuck 'em all.

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 03:07 AM

Madonna is perfect. It's the copycats who took what she had and made it worse.

Malachi_Constant 01.22.2007 03:10 AM

Madonna's a whore.

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 03:11 AM

No, that is just a persona, she puts on. That is just her being creative.

Malachi_Constant 01.22.2007 03:12 AM

Uh-huh.

She's Marilyn Manson with tits.

She's a whore.

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 03:14 AM

No-no you are not comprehending, that she is just using sex to sell. That there is brilliant. Albeit that now sex sells more, and numbs the brain of kids. But what she did was groundbreaking.

Malachi_Constant 01.22.2007 03:18 AM

Dude... people have used sex to sell since the dawn of time. It's nothing new. She did nothing but eke a brand name out of it. Whoop-de-fuckin'-doo.

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 03:19 AM

I know people have used sex to sell before, but not like her. She actually showed everything to the mainstream. Just look at her book. That is what I mean.

!@#$%! 01.22.2007 03:25 AM

she was famous before the book though. the book was shit as a book except for the jackoff pics.

Malachi_Constant 01.22.2007 03:29 AM

Which swings it back to the Marilyn Manson thing. Provocation for the sake of provocation is fine and all, but it's still a gimmick. A schtick. It gets old fast.

The media portrays her as this "master of reinvention"... constantly changing up styles and all that. Fuck that. Emperor's new clothes. A different shade of eyeliner and a new hair-do and all of a sudden she's "on to that next wave." That's kack. Pure and simple. It's the fashion industry.

Which brings me to yet another point I feel I've only hinted at in previous posts... how EVERYTHING has been fucking swallowed up by the fashion industry these days. At least, as far as popular culture is concerned. You want your "ultimate evil" responsible for irreparably damaging the minds of our youth... that's it. Right there. THE MOTHERFUCKING FASHION INDUSTRY.

Madonna's just a symptom.

Revolution is the only cure.

king_buzzo 01.22.2007 10:48 AM
