Songs You're Ashamed To Not Like

What songs do you NOT like that it would ruin your indie cred if people got to hear about it?

screamingskull 12.15.2006 05:22 AM

pretty much the whole of Bad Moon Rising. sorry.

sonicl 12.15.2006 05:23 AM

That's cool. Two Hail Marys and an Our Father and your sin will be forgiven.

Thomas Moronic 12.15.2006 05:48 AM

I never really got into Talking Heads. I'm not ashamed though.

fishmonkey 12.15.2006 06:29 AM

i DO NOT like Dinosaur Jr.

is that what you mean?

sonicl 12.15.2006 06:32 AM

It depends whether you feel your not liking them damages your indie cred. And whether you have come to my confessional to seek absolution. Only the truly penitent will receive absolution.

RdTv 12.15.2006 06:33 AM

Yeah, me too with the Dinosaur Jr., maybe I should listen to the entire catalog again, but I think the best chance of me liking their stuff is going to be on Bug.

sonicl 12.15.2006 06:35 AM

Bless you, my child. Your attempts to reconcile yourself give you great credit.

Pixies?

REM, Talking Heads and Franz Ferdinand share a thing for me : their music itches.
Do I wanna repent? Well uh... No.

But I have a problem, Father :

A song I'm ashamed to like/dislike/like/dislike/like is Blockbuster by Jesus Lizard. The music is close to excellent but I can't get over the lyrics.

This is getting me confused.

sonicl 12.15.2006 07:30 AM

My child, it is no sin to dislike Franz Ferdinand, for the Good Book warns against the worship of false idols.

Your crisis of faith regarding Blockbuster is one upon which you must meditate, for it is only by prayer and contemplation that you will find the true answer.

sonicl 12.15.2006 07:37 AM

For my own part, I felt almost terminally uncool at ATP for not being in the least bit interested in seeing Magic Markers, Wolf Eyes, 16 Bitch Pile-Up, Prurient...

what are you into exactly?

I'm a sucker for music that I have at least half a chance of being able to hum. Either that or drifty-ambient kinda stuff.

sonicl 12.15.2006 07:57 AM

I'll check it out over the weekend and report back.

i saw em a few years ago on the sonic nurse tour. guitar driven ambient noise. very minimalistic, no musical boundaries really being pushed, but not exactly boring either.

if ya find any stuff, let me know.

I just listened to a few clips on the Aquarius Records website. I wasn't too keen on the stuff from "A Hole Is True", but I liked what I heard from "Halve Maen". Life would have been so much easier if my preference had been the other way round.

LifeDistortion 12.15.2006 01:26 PM

The Smiths

The same.

sorry.

the ikara cult 12.15.2006 05:42 PM

Mathematically speaking, i should like Dinosaur Junior. But alas, i think theyre SHITE!

Trasher02 12.15.2006 05:49 PM

I'm suprised to see how many people dislike Dinosaur jr.
I think they're quite nice.

Inhuman 12.15.2006 05:52 PM

Sly and the Family Stone
Sam Cooke
A lot of Wu-tang affiliated stuff, but a lot of their other stuff is superbe
Throbbing Gristle

there's a lot more, but I'm having a brain freeze right now. I wish I could dig these artists more

Nah sorry. Maybe i think its a bit corny, i dont know. But if i dont give a reason i feel like im becoming a J Mascis like figure who walks around going "hmm yeah... whatever".
Indie Disclaimer: My vision of J Mascis comes entirely from Our Band Could be your life. Please PM me my Indie Crucifixion date and time.

Trasher02 12.15.2006 05:54 PM

I never really got into Pavement, though I'm still trying.
And I like Modest mouse But I think the song Float on is terrible!

Inhuman 12.15.2006 05:56 PM

I actually don't dig pavement that much. I used to be really into them, and I still like a few songs but I find that most of it sounds boring now. I respect Malkmus as a person though, especially for his involvement in Silver Jews.

Savage Clone 12.15.2006 07:10 PM

I am indifferent to Pavement and The Pixies, as I was when they were each a going concern, but I don't actively dislike them like I do Dino Jr. They are all a little too "big" to really damage one's "indie cred" at this point anyway.

NNCK have been 50/50 live for me. I have seen them twice. Once in 1999, which was pretty great, and once a couple of years ago, which was not great. I think they are pretty damn cool when they are on their game, but not consistently incredible. I do have faith that the next time I see them stands a good chance of being great though. They are that kind of group.

I think the overwhelming majority of Finnish "free folk" groups couldn't play their way out of a wet paper bag, and aren't very interesting at all. A few are OK, but this trend is probably less deserving of the huge, hyperbole-laden accolades that have been heaped upon it than any other recent "next big things" in the underground. I have yet to see one that could cut it in a live setting at all, though some do have recordings that are pretty good.

Savage Clone 12.15.2006 07:13 PM

I don't know exactly.
Matters of taste are purely subjective anyway, right?
Cool is in the eye of the beholder.

ZEROpumpkins 12.15.2006 09:34 PM

I don't dig Sister as much as I dig other SY albums of that time. There's some good songs on there but I never really got into some of them.

I wouldn't say ashamed and i wouldn't say i've ever totally disliked that many bands in their entirety(apart from a few whose output i just can't stomach)but:
Sunburned Hand Of The Man -I could be totally wrong but what i've heard left me not only umoved but made reach for the nearest pillow.
No Neck Blues Band-Another case of having heard some of their stuff and i wasn't too keen on them.I gather(from the widespread enthusiasm on other threads) that they seem a good band live. Can't say much as i'm not terribly familiar with their records.
Yo La Tengo-More a case of not being able to register on the same wavelength they're on.
Pavement-I could stomach them if they didnt have a singer and no verbal output to speak of.As it stands,i keep away from their records as they annoy me more than anything.
There are more.

dazedcola 12.16.2006 12:03 AM

I don't like Joy Division at all.Their music does nothing for me

IMHO, SBHOTM really don't really work if you're only hearing them, they just sound a bit of a shoddy mess. Live, though, they are something else altogether. That shoddy mess becomes some kind of a 1960's "happening" crossed with a Harlem gospel church service.

CHOUT 12.16.2006 02:40 AM

Pavement, can't get into them. I like a few songs, but nothing ever blew me away.

CHOUT 12.16.2006 02:44 AM

Straight up noise is fun live, but bores me to listen to in album form.

Pookie 12.16.2006 08:51 AM

Oh so many.

The two big ones are probably Iggy/Stooges (emperor's new clothes?) and New York Dolls.

But also:
Jackie O'Motherfucker
Lightning Bolt
Yo La Tengo
Flaming Lips
and I could name more.

But I wouldn't say I'm ashamed, it's just something you think that everybody else loves but I can't figure out why.

You don't like Joy Division? That's sad.

Glice 12.16.2006 11:50 AM

No shame, but: Joy Division; Most punk; most American hardcore; Marley; Bowie; The Beatles; Nick Drake; NY Dolls; The Stooges (although I'll concede they are incredible live); Pavement; Nirvana; Metallica; The White Stripes (invoke nearly as much hate in me as Bowie); SHOTM (Personally, it's substandard NNCK to me); The Kinks; The Stones; Kris Kristoferson (I hate him, but I probably shouldn't - I'm a huge country fan, but not of him); The Bee Gees (obviously, most of this board probably hates them, but personally I think I should like them but don't); Guns n' Roses.

There, that's pretty much nailed me as an utter contrarian prick. I don't consciously hate any of these to be 'difficult', but I sometimes wonder if my subconscious does.
