who were your favorite bands of each of the last 5 years?
after looking at the other thread, got to thinking
2002: SY, Erase Errata, Mary Timony, Nirvana 2003: Les Georges Leningrad, Erase Errata, SY, Cat Power 2004: Les Georges Leningrad, SY, Sleater-Kinney, Casual Dots 2005: Sleater-Kinney, Magik Markers, Yoko Ono, Devo, Shonen Knife, SY 2006: Erase Errata, Sleater-Kinney, Les Georges Leningrad, SY, Boris i think i see a pattern |
the pattern being, you love bitches in bands.
|
Rather boring, I know, but:
2002 - SY / Nick Cave / Neubauten 2003 - SY / Nick Cave / Neubauten 2004 - SY / Nick Cave / Neubauten 2005 - SY / Nick Cave / Neubauten 2006 - SY / Nick Cave / Neubauten |
Well, I've been in my late thirties from 2002 onwards, so I figure I have every right to be set in my ways. You can't teach an old dog new tricks, and all that. :p
|
I know where you're coming from, Nefeli. My interest in music generally has been rejuvenated recently by the "post-metal" scene, which has led me to explore all sorts of unexpected genres, many of them totally unconnected with "post-metal".
|

First of all, Boyzone are shit. Second of all, Pussycat Dolls weren't even around in '04. Fucking poseurs like you make me sick. Were you there for Take That at Wembley '95? I was totally there. I am clearly so much more 1337 than you. |
2002: T. Rex
2003: The Velvet Underground 2004: Sonic Youth 2005: I have no idea. Probably Nick Cave. 2006: More Nick Cave, Birthday Party, whatever. |

I have at least 10 favorite bands every year, and I'm obviously forgetting something |
Quote:
This man likes ATR. He is better than all of you, times a million. *Edit: Loses several thousand points for liking Ani 'shit' DiFranco though. |
Overhang Party and High Rise have pretty much ruled since the mid 90s.
|
sigh, I dunno
|
this topic is seemingly retarded in too many ways.
To me ATR suck and always have... digital hardcore was one of the least significant types of music in the last 10-15 years. though i'd take Ani Difranco any day over Courtney Love's Hole, i mean that in a couple of ways too. In the last 5 years I can only think of 1 to 3 significant rock type bands that have kicked my ass, alot of the other music i listen to has been non-rock related |
Quote:
And when I say "The Velvet Underground," I probably mean Johnny Thunders. |
Age 12, probably Led Zeppelin or something
Age 13, Nirvana Age 14, Nirvana Age 15, Leftover Crack Age 16, GBH |
2002 - Garbage
2003 - Sonic Youth 2004 - Sonic Youth 2005 - Sonic Youth 2006 - Sonic Youth / Yo La Tengo |
in the past 5 years these are probably the things i have listened to the most:
sonic youth, fushitsusha/haino, melt banana, harry pussy, dead c, mf doom, bardo pond, the jesus lizard, leviathan, solex, tara jane o'neil, sun ra, john coltrane, double leopards +related projects, apani b fly emcee, dj spinna related things, james brown, guided by voices, the shadow ring, dj shadow things, yellow magic orchestra, trojan records compilations, compilations of funk, compilations of afrobeat, quasimoto, boris, shellac, darkthrone, striborg, percee p |
5 (well, 6) bands that have been releasing good stuff over the past 5 years:
Sonic Youth Deerhoof OOIOO Brad Mehldau Trio Radiohead |

2001- Radiohead, Mogwai, Idlewild
2002- The Fall, Buzzcocks, Ikara Colt 2003- Million Dead, Sonic Youth, These Arms Are Snakes 2004- Youthmovies, Sufjan Stevens, CocoRosie 2005- Boards of Canada, Animal Collective, Sleeping People, Jesu 2006- Battles, Grizzly Bear, Six Organs of Admittance |
Quote:
By 'use them' do you mean 'whine in a particularly uninspiring fashion whilst being a little bit white funk and appealing only to bulldog dykes who are so ugly on they can truly understand the ugliness of that horrific music'? If so then I agree. Glice's rules of the internet, #472 - Ani DiFranco fans are humourless, sexless walking corpses. Be careful when you wind them up, because they tend to whine more than your average emo kid. |
sy
nick cave and the bad seeds einsturzende neubauten tool kurt weill |

2002 - Ikara colt. Terminally underrated, fast angry and clever.
2003 - and you will know us by the trail of dead. Only the first album sounds like sonic Youth. When i actually bought Daydream Nation i was very dissappointed because it didnt remind me of trail of dead (at least not Source tags and codes) at all. 2004 - Sonic Youth. The genesis of an Obsession in the crappest year of music ever. 2005 - The Shins, The Fall. The Shins helped when i quit. And i didnt hear them from Garden State. The Fall helped me when i felt i couldnt identify with any "young" bands that all had stupid hair and sounded like bad versions of bad versions of Oasis. They also filled the gap that the bleak months of February/March ish created (Mclusky and Ikara Colt splitting up in quick succession. I was sad). 2006 - Onedia, Les savy fav. Les savy fav rock as you all agree. And Oneida are a recent discovery who sound better everytime i listen to them. |
