Who were your favourites bands in 1981, 1991 and 2001?

Assuming, of course, that you were born and musically aware in each of those years.

1981 - Altered Images
1991 - Sonic Youth
2001 - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

pokkeherrie 11.14.2006 09:23 AM

1981 - i wasn't even old enough to go to preschool yet but i remember loving that song "i won't let you down" by phd when i was about 3 years old. that song is from 1981. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92T2LohMqG8

1991 - guns n' roses and nirvana i suppose

2001 - sonic youth

davenotdead 11.14.2006 09:31 AM

1981-not born
1991-not musically aware
2001-dave mathews band probably (i suppose your definition of 'musically aware' could factor here)

same here

I was 12 and 13 during 1981. I also liked Styx and Olivia Newton-John a lot, but I remember liking The Doors so much that I would listen to the radio constantly to try and tape their songs when played. A friend got me into Devo in the seventh grade too. I didn't start listening to The Beatles really until the following year when the local station did an A-to-Z The Beatles weekend and I taped all of the songs on several cassettes.

Did you get to see NIN around '91? I saw them support Guns 'n' Roses about then. They were pretty good, but not really suitable for a stadium show.

EDIT - And I saw DM in 1981 and SY in 2001!

_slavo_ 11.14.2006 10:24 AM

1981 - I was one year old, so I did not probably care much about music back then

Second time at the 013 on 28 Nov 99.

81 - i was 4 so p,robably some ABC learning shite.
91 - Nirvana, Sonic Youth
01 - Nine Inch Nails, Sonic Youth

Hip Priest 11.14.2006 02:59 PM

1981 - Tenpole Tudor
1991 - The Fall (a love that started in 1986)
2001 - The Fall

2006 - The Fall and Sonic Youth share equal standing.

I think that the release of Murray Street was what really made me love Sonic Youth; the sheer brilliance ofMurray Street (my favourite LP of all time) made me listen again to what I had and explore the entire back catalogue with rather more seriousness. I came to love Sister and NYC Ghosts and Flowers almost as much as I already loved Murray Street and Dirty.

SO - which ZZ Top were you enjoying back in 91: the electric drum machine sounds of, "Rough Boy" and "Sleeping Bag" or the older classic bluesy ZZ sounds?

typical '80s teenage shit:...I had Quiet Riot - Metal Health, Ratt - Out of the Cellar, Billy Idol - s/t, Rebel Yell, Don't Stop ep wth interview on cassette, Rush - 2112 and Moving Pictures, Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil, all The Doors titles, etc... when I was in the Columbia House tape club deal, but that was like 1983-5.
