Favourite SY Album of the 90's

Okay this is a follow up to the 'Favourite SY Album of the 00's' thread (in which 'Sonic Nurse' was the clear winner). Its kinda pointless doing a thread about their 80's albums, because 'Daydream Nation will always get the most votes. The 90's however is a tricky decade and divides many opinions. Sonic Youth's output is probebly more polarized than it had ever been before or since in the 90's. In my experience people who like 'Goo' or 'Dirty' dont warm to the late 90's stuff like 'A Thousand Leaves' and vice-versa (not always the case with hardcore fans). So it will be interesting to see the board's favourite.

RdTv 11.03.2006 08:40 AM

A Thousand Leaves
Washing Machine
Goo
EJSTNS
Dirty

I don't have SYR:4 so therefore it can't be ranked.

Trasher02 11.03.2006 08:44 AM

Goo

Washing Leaves with A Thousand Machines

king_buzzo 11.03.2006 08:56 AM

can you make a multiple answer pole please ?

Washing Machine 11.03.2006 08:56 AM

Lol as long as 'Experimental, Jet Set...' doesn't win

toxic johnny 11.03.2006 09:01 AM

SYR4
A Thousand Leaves
Experimental, Jet Set, Trash And No Star
Goo
Washing Machine
Dirty

king_buzzo 11.03.2006 09:03 AM

Goo

Toxa 11.03.2006 09:30 AM

1. goo (very nostalgic album for me... "cindrella's big score" and "disappearer" are my all time favs)
2. washing machine (just one word here for me: "unwind")
3. a thousand leaves (it has a couple of songs which I really love, "hoarfrost" and "wildflower")
4. ejstns (I like it but its really "no star" album..)
5. syr4 (it's hard to compare this with others because of different style)
6. dirty (worst sy album ever imo)

ATL is a very close second for me... in fact so close it hurts... SYR4 just nudges ahead because I'll never forget the cold chill thrill that ran up and down my spine the first time that I heard it... and also it opened up a hole new musical universe for me...

atari 2600 11.03.2006 10:57 AM

Washing Machine or Goo, I went with Washing Machine.

noisemachine 11.03.2006 02:34 PM

Washing Machine is my favorite, with Goo a close seconde. Then I would say A Thousand Leaves and Dirty. Experimental Jet Set is okay, not great. As is SYR4.

Hip Priest 11.03.2006 02:45 PM

My top three SY LP's include one from each decade, and the 80'd representativeis Dirty.

Even if that's the case, I think it would be interesting to see just how much of the vote it gets and where other votes go. Evol and Sister in particular seem to be very popular indeed on this forum.

porkmarras 11.03.2006 02:53 PM

Washing Machine is the one that makes me feel dizzy and stroke a stranger's head(to quote Lenin's idea of what music is) and 'A Thousand Leaves' is a close second. Here was a band at the height of their powers or anyone's powers at that.

greenlight 11.03.2006 03:00 PM

Washing Machine + Goo

k-krack 11.03.2006 03:10 PM

(Washing Machine, being the only SY album I'm yet to own, cannot be ranked)

Goo
ATL
Goodbye 20th Century
Dirty
EJSTANS (I love it, but I cannot place it higher... I do love it...)

EJSTANS is a much maligned album but i still love it and it pisses me off that it gets criticized so much when they have made worst albums than that(and so we're clear,i think that Sonic Youth have made a false move only with the last two).

I agree 'Washing Machine' is my favourite SY album of the 90's (hence my name!) followed closely by SYR4 and 'Dirty' (simply because its a great historical document of SY's Grunge period and the early 90's alternative rock scene - of which I have much affection for).

I've never been able to warm to 'A Thousand Leaves', if I put it on, its only to listen to Sunday, Hoarfrost and Hits of Sunshine. EJTNS doesn't do very much for me either.

lowlife 11.04.2006 03:11 AM

It is hard to beat SYR-4. Only something like 'Bad Moon Rising' or 'Confusion is Sex' steps up.

PAULYBEE2656 11.04.2006 05:57 AM

syr4 is great (where is syr 1 2 and 3 in the poll tho???)

my vote goess to washing machine because it contains the diamond sea. beautiful sonic. barely edgeing out the mote filled goo

Washing Machine 11.04.2006 07:47 AM

SYR 1, 2 and 3 were EP's so I didn't include them - I had to keep it strictly to Albums otherwise if I included all the EP's, Solo Projects and soundtrack records the poll would go on forever lol

PAULYBEE2656 11.04.2006 12:47 PM

i wouldnt class syrs as eps as such. they are syr releases as albums regardless of length and track numbers...
anyway, i was just nitpicking.............

porkmarras 11.04.2006 12:50 PM

Why isn't Murray Street(to name one)pn the poll choices?

lizzarddd 11.04.2006 01:19 PM

this is hard, but dirty.
atl is my second

That was on the 'Favourite Albums of the 00's' Poll. This is just the 90's.
Even though its somewhat pointless (as Daydream Nation will clearly win) the next one i'll do will be an 80's poll (as someone suggested it would be interesting to see what % of the vote EVOL and Sister get). We can then see what the board's favourite album of each decade is. So far its

90's - 'Washing Machine'
00's - 'Sonic Nurse'

Yay I voted for both of them!

You could always exclude it from the poll...

mushmanski57@hotmail.com 11.05.2006 01:20 PM

Washing Machine, followed closely by Goo, then ATL.

Pax Americana 11.05.2006 01:49 PM

Wahshing Muhsheen

drrrtyboots 11.05.2006 02:28 PM

ATL was by far the most beautiful music they made during the 90's, followed closely by many of WM's songs.

Santa's Monkey 11.05.2006 02:32 PM

I went with ATL - Jet Set was the first SY record I got and it definitely made me seek out more, but, surely, divine inspiration cause Jet Set is largely awful (Bull in Heather being massive exception). I think ATL was the next step I took and, wow, it's gorgeous. It seems like a soft version of SY but when you consider the details - Contre, Heather... it's pretty avant.

Either way SYR2 is my fav nineties release. That first track is unforgiveably good.
