what should Sonic Youth do?
as it seems with the firings of a&r reps at interscope, it seems like SY are no longer wanted after their 6 album deal has expired
so what are your thoughts? |
Die.
|
They'll manage.
What immediately springs to mind though is (although I do realize that business is business) that the higher-ups at DGC/Interscope are fools if they proceed to dump the most important band of the last (over) twenty-five years. |
They would do fine if they went completely self-contained.
|
Everything through SYR.....Ecstatic would be more likely though.
|
I think they should make amends with Steve Albini and get on Touch and Go!
Cuz it's very likely. |
Like Savage said: Self-contained. They'll survive.
|
Self contained, releasing loads of stuff on a subscription-only basis and occasionally licensing "proper" albums to a "proper" label. It's working just fine for Neubauten.
|
I think they should go for a magor like Warner so we get loads of DVDs an EPs like the flaming lips fans get every now and then. We know that there is no risk that they will "sell out" so they should enjoy a large scale international distribution.

Yea....and to make sure they can still release the deluxe edition of Daydream Nation, plus the support labels give for continued tours..... |
The DD re-issue shouldn't be an issue, since Geffen will no doubt still be happy to make some pennies from the SY back catalogue.
I still think they should go it alone and find a distributer, but if they were to sign for a cred-label, how about Blast First? |

my guess is they'll either renogotiate with Geffen or move to a large indie.

Warp! That would be so fucking cool to see them on an adventurous dance label! |

I don't think it matters too much where they go, since they have been around for so long and their fanbase is so dedicated that they will find their stuff no matter what.
SY should just do everything on their own, forget about the majors, hasn't helped that much up till now anyway. |
I wouldnt mind if they stopped making records alltogether as of all the bands that i can think of,they are one of the very few that have kept the quality really high for most of their career until recently.

I said SYR..

Now I agree that A thousand Leaves and NYC Ghosts and Flowers were subpar, but you don't think Murray Street, Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped aren't great? |
I could see why most people don't like rather ripped, but I think Sonic Nurse and Murray Street were better than RR.
|
Rather Ripped was a piece of useless garbage. I fed it to my garbage disposal.

am I out of line to think that Rather Ripped is great? Come on "Pink Steam", "Incinerate", "Do you believe in Rapture" I think they are getting better.
Nothing will ever compare to Sister, Confusion is Sex or Daydream Nation but i think Rather Ripped is up there as far as the DGC stuff goes. (....I know I'm gonna get fried for this one) |
I think they should sell out to Ipecac: Artist-run label; all of their releases have some eye-candy appeal; corporate distro w/out corporate lawyers getting in the way; they can still put out their own vinyl; no need to worry about the day-to-day stuff that comes with running a business; they can finally do a collabo album with the melvins...
|
is that even a valid question? SYR.
