boris - vein

A new boris album is available at important records. Maybe somebody caught a few words on this at some blog or something ... because I couldn't find any review yet. And, since it's pretty pricey ...

Boris - Vein
Written by Important Records
Friday, 23 June 2006
artist: Boris
title: Vein
catalog number: imprec100
format: Picture disc lp
release date: sometime between now and Aug 22, 2006.

Japan's Boris has chosen to follow Pink (Southern Lord) with this deluxe vinyl only offering. Vein is a completely transparent picture disc lp with a border image on the outter perimeter of the vinyl which is actually screen printed on the clear mylar "picture". The grooves begin within the image and this record is housed in a transparent picture disc jacket affixed with two custom cut stickers.

Japan's highest ranked ampgods Boris have created Vein; an exploding singular monolith rooted firmly in all of Boris' sounds. Opening hard and heavy with more guitar feedback than you'd think a thick chunk of vinyl could hold they proceed to plunder the Boris audio-vaults bringing out and incorporating all of the elements that make Boris. Vein has massive methodical low end guitar drone, explosive thrash metal, sound samples and plenty of feedback to go around. Bow down fellow worshipers and let this thick chunk of sound explode around you. This record is so heavy you're going to blow your speakers just thinking about listening to it.

Important records latest news

Savage Clone 10.03.2006 03:18 PM

I think I need this.
Picture discs sund like crap and all, but this looks really cool.

dnorsen 10.03.2006 03:43 PM

yo check out my redesign of the website while your at it!

Everyneurotic 10.03.2006 04:14 PM

i just walked 20 blocks to the bank to deposit the money to my card to order vein, then walked back 20 blocks back to paypal the money. i'm exhausted.

has anyone who ordered it from important get a confirmation email?

Savage Clone 10.03.2006 04:18 PM

Looks like it's not a picture disc after all (which is fine with me); it's clear vinyl with silkscreened mylar inserts.
Good news for sound!

Everyneurotic 10.03.2006 04:20 PM

sc: read the news info, they went thru hell to make that record, it originally was going to be a pic disc.

Great job on the design! It looks alot better than it did.

pokkeherrie 10.17.2006 07:00 AM

So has anyone ordered this?

There seems te be a lot going on with the release of this thing... apparently there are two entirely different versions of this: a 12-track "grind" version and a 2-track "noise" version).

Tokolosh 10.17.2006 07:03 AM

Interesting that you mention that. I'm planning to get it, but now I gotta make a decision, 'cause I thought there was only one version and it's pretty expensive.

Edit: Where did you find the info, if you don't mind me asking? It's not mentioned on the Important records site.

sonicl 10.17.2006 07:17 AM

While I think to mention it, there will be a Southern Lord compilation CD with the next issue (issue 16) of Plan B magazine.

Well, there are about a dozen threads about it on the Southern Lord forums. :D

It's sold out at the source by the way and apparently there were far more pre-orders than records atually pressed... so the decision has been made for you.

from http://www.aquariusrecords.org/cat/newest.html

"Finally, we've been getting lots of emails about the forthcoming Boris 12" Vein. And sorry to say we have some bad news. Here's the story in a nutshell:

We pre-ordered 100 copies ages ago. We just discovered that all distributors were shorted and so now we're probably only getting 30 or 40 copies at the most. We already have over 50 special orders/pre-orders. So basically even some of the folks who pre-ordered Vein will end up getting screwed as will anyone who was waiting for us to review it on the list. Not too much we can do about it. We whined and kvetched, but to no avail.
If you must complain, best to either contact IMPORTANT RECORDS, but even their hands were sort of tied as Boris insisted on only making 1500 copies, even knowing that there were 3000 preorders. Or try to contact the band directly. Regardless, of the 1500, 300 of the copies went to the band. 400 were sold on the Important website in about 5 minutes. Which means somehow 800 copies have to be spread out over 3000 preorders worldwide. And the retail is a whopping $36!! For what is essentially an ep. So that's the story. We tried, but there was really nothing we could do. So a handful of lucky folks will get their copy of Vein. It's off to the dreaded eBay for everybody else..."

supposedly this is from the guy from Important Records (found this copy-pasted on the SL forum)

"Yes, Boris wanted Vein to be two records. One was limited to 400 and 100 of them went to Boris.. a bunch to European mailorder and some to Cargo. I wanted to split them up US/Europe thinking that it would take people a long time to figure it out... the last thing I wanted to do was deal with this nightmare right after the record came out, but I forgot about a little thing called "the internet" where people from around the world communicate on message boards. As soon as the first mp3 was posted everyone figured it out.
The version of Vein that is in the states is 12 tracks of drony hardcore. The noise record is two tracks and the first side is heavy guitar drone/feedback and the b-side has some hardcore drumming and vocals totally smothered in noise.
Good ol' Boris."

Thanks pokkeherrie. Will look into it now.

therealglenstyler 10.17.2006 09:06 AM

ha i was just here to start a boris thread, just discovered them and was wondering which stuff people recommend most highly.

wax 10.17.2006 10:02 AM

yv all got dronevil, right?

Savage Clone 10.17.2006 10:04 AM

I want this LP, but the supposed "deluxe issue" of Earth Covers Earth by Current 93 that this same label did turned out to be very flimsy and disappointing when I finally saw it. I hope this one is not like that.

cool, how does pink measure up?

therealglenstyler 10.18.2006 06:11 AM

I'm really hoping that there's a band out there called Natascha that could tour with Boris. just to catch sight of a poster for that show would make me silly happy.

"Pink", "Akuma No Uta", and "Soundtrack from film 'Mabuta No Ura'" are all essential boris albums.

val-holla-ing 10.19.2006 01:53 AM

i've got 'vein' and i must say, it didn't let me down. word on the street is that there's two versions of it. the version important sent out was a bunch of really intense harcore punk songs and the european version was borisey noise.

therealglenstyler 10.19.2006 08:19 AM

thanks folks, akuma no uta is the one with the nick drake cover isn't it? contender for best cover ever easy.

val-holla-ing 10.19.2006 11:54 AM

yeah, that's 'akuma no uta'

dnorsen 10.19.2006 01:10 PM

pretty close. all copies were released by important records, but all euro bought copies are 2trk noise low noise drone-y shit while the usa version is the 12trk hardcore punk you spoke of... tricky, tricky boris. john at important told me he is having a field day with emails...

yeah, someone in a livejournal boris community just mentioned that to me. if boris weren't so damn good, i'd say they're starting to get too big for their britches, but since they put so much time and cash into this record, i can't be mad.

it's like a nice warm loving punch in the face, isn't it?

wax 10.20.2006 05:35 AM

they just like to release things that will become collectable. idont think they aer too big for their britches at all. they could make a shit load of cash if they did larger issues of their records, but they dont, and you know that when they are in japan, not so many people know them, and they work dayjobs. so i think its pretty kool that they sacrifice the cash for making good atractive records that will be very collectable.
they also despise ebay for that same reason. people buying the records as soon as they are available then selling them on for a large profit.
they are very much into making things perfect in terms of the artwork etc.
they are touring the us now, or did they just finish?

therealglenstyler 10.20.2006 08:47 AM

yeah they seem to be pretty loving with their artwork all their stuff looks beautiful..and the guy who seems to do most of it is called blood anal satan, seriously, who'd call their kid that? akuma no uta or hakuna ma tata?

PAULYBEE2656 10.21.2006 07:44 AM

vein rules! just listened to it today. pink and akuma are incredible albums tho.

i know what you're saying, but i was just reading that they were very demanding about this particular record, not only in terms of artwork (which is very understandable), but also about how much of a percentage they would be getting from the sales (which is also understandable, but a bit contradictory to the "we're in it for the music" approach they seem to take), so it's not like they're sacrificing that much in the way of how much they're actually making. especially since these limited releases usually cost upwards of $30-$50 USD.

they just finished touring the US.
