So are you one?

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.05.2006 04:28 PM

Nope, I'm not a hipster. I don't think there is any classification for what I am.

chabib 04.05.2006 04:57 PM

noumenal 04.05.2006 04:58 PM

a variety of internet geek, perhaps?

Savage Clone 04.05.2006 06:18 PM

T&B is so hip, he can't find pants that fit and has a personal tailor on staff!

doctor dan 04.05.2006 06:55 PM

the only people who deny being hipsters are hipsters themselves. theyre the only ones who care so much about theyre own image that they deny being in their own subculture, as that would suggest theyre not individual.

noumenal 04.05.2006 06:57 PM

If I asked President Bush if he was a hipster, I'm pretty sure he'd say no.

golden child 04.05.2006 06:59 PM

me and my friends like to crack jokes about scenesters, which makes us pretty scene i guess.

when my social status is in question i like being a wiseass and saying that im not hip, punk, jock and that i am me. i am ben-david gilman

which i guess is probaly the hipest thing i could say

and all the people who aren't hipsters might deny being a hipster too... or an english person, because hipster is not an english word, unless you are refering to a type of ladies trouser.

So how would the non-hipsters answer?

HaydenAsche 04.05.2006 07:31 PM

I'm so hipster it hurts. You probably all are too. You just can't admit it.

krastian 04.05.2006 09:39 PM

I still really have no clue what a hipster is.

marleypumpkin 04.05.2006 09:44 PM

I'm a hipster doofus.

!@#$%! 04.05.2006 10:19 PM

fuck no! hipsters are protoyuppies. once their student loans run out they go & become lawyers, record-label executives, and marketers for upscale products. an inflow of hipsters in a neighborhood s the first sign of gentrification, which brings yuppie doom: starbucks across the street from another, dean & delucas, & the ultimate expression of "there goes the neighborhood!"---designer furniture stores.

but i could describe myself as a geek of all trades (i don't have a single obsession: computers, music, film, books-- but in the spirit of geekdom, not scenesterism).

That's hilarious.

On a side note
I think I found what I am! A human being that is an individual and undeserving of stereotypes.

...That wiki definition sucks.

Savage Clone 04.06.2006 12:03 AM

I wear tight pants, all black all the time, put shit in my hair, collect LPs, sell records on the internet for a living, collect vintage mod furniture, underground comix, toys. I am also in several bands that only a few people know about.

Fuck.

porkmarras 04.06.2006 02:02 AM

It's all about outside perspective though, really, not how you define yourself. After all, it's your jury of peers that's applying said labels in the first place, not you. And I would bet that nearly all of us on this board qualify to be hipsters, if observed by objective bystanders.

The things that make me evil, 'mainstream,' and unashamed:

I buy jeans from Abercrombie & Fitch
I like Nelly
I read books from Oprah's list
I like to be girly and primp on occasion
I dye my hair
I have tattoos
I shop at Urban Outfitters, Ikea, and Wal-Mart
I smoke
If I'm desperate, I'll go to Starbucks (and don't tell me I'm keeping the little guy down, one does that every time he/she walks into a chain grocery store, gets gas, buys shoes, pretty much wipes his ass)
I think Interpol is catchy
I dress too much like a lazy fucker to ever be considered hip. It's not even 'carelessly cool,' it's just fuckin scummy (t-shirt & jeans is my official uniform)

I can call myself whatever I want, 'ecclectic,' 'eccentric,' 'individualistic,' but I, like all the rest of you, am just an interchangeable cog in the human wheel of existence. Everyone else realized that seemingly depressing fact long ago, and that's why we have so many Catholics now.

hah hah hah hah hah hah

i thought this was because "every sperm is sacred" :D

Everyneurotic 04.06.2006 10:19 AM

so to be clear...are hipsters the ones who pretentiously talk about pop music that's doesn't get played on the radio and actually they don't listen to any of it and just think about what genre they belong in and if they are overrated or underrated?

if it's so, 90% of the board are hipster scum. "ohh the irony!!"

i'm so into so much uncool music, and the fact that i actually listen to music, that i couldn't be hipster even if my life depended on it. plus, i'm too broke to buy the right clothes or go to overpriced hip clubs and bars just to dance to shitty interpol remixes.

jheii 04.06.2006 10:33 AM

I read the Beat writers. Dress in slacks and untucked button-down shirts. My girlfriend and I have an ever-growing supply of Long-Play's and used books. We hang Tibetan prayer flags from our ceiling. We cover our Goodwill/Salvation Army furniture with fabric. Some of it is tie-dyed. We have a TV, but there's no cable, not even an antenna. Just a DVD player and a very nice hi-fi. The word "bohemian" gets thrown around a lot (which happens to be the latest buzzword in high fashion). We're artists, but we're not starving. What does that make me?

_slavo_ 04.06.2006 10:39 AM

me? hipster? I don't really know.

Maybe i am, maybe not.
I don't give a fuck really.

!@#$%! 04.06.2006 02:28 PM

well the fact that you have artistic tendencies or refined/obscure tastes does not automatically make you a hipster. to me a modern hipster is more poser than artist or connoisseur; meaning: another social cow conforming to the dictates of a particular brand of herd mentality, just like narrow-minded punks from the 80's or anybody that lives by a determined set of fashionable rules. .. fuckem!!! fuckem all!!!!!

Hip Priest 04.06.2006 04:50 PM

I consider myself pretty hip, but we should all feel that way about ourselves in my opinion. But hipster means one who is particularly associated with a particular scene, I think, so not a hipster: I like to think my hipness crosses many boundaries. I think it's pretty hip to have a range of tastes.
