noisereductions 11.06.2011 05:13 PM

my favorite track on Murray Street.

E. Noisefield 11.06.2011 07:37 PM

Top ten SY song, easily. Noisereductions- it's my favorite MS track also. Even better than Rain on Tin. Even better than Karen Revisited.

Love it.

noisereductions 11.06.2011 09:30 PM

"Karenology" is 2nd favorite. I always felt "Strawberry" Should open MS. THen the rest of the album as presented. It's just such an amazig slow builder. It's ... wow.

E. Noisefield 11.06.2011 11:33 PM

But then it would end with "Plastic Sun", which is just not a closer.

BTW: Karenology isn't on MS. :)

Yes, same song

http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/sy/song328.html

Working title: "Dirge" aka "Karen II"
Debuted instrumentally in 2001, first performed with vocals at the 2002 All Tomorrow's Parties festival.
Part of the outro on the LP version is taken from the 10/07/01 debut of the song in NYC.
The fourth of five new compositions debuted by Sonic Youth in 2001.
Lyrics on sonicyouth.com have slight alterations: "Come home/some time" and "stuck in isolation" sang at the end.
TITLE CHANGED POST RELEASE: after the artwork for Murray Street had been finalized (yet prior to its release, I believe), Lee decided he preferred the title "KARENOLOGY" and the song's title was officially changed for all purposes other than, uh, the album release.

E. Noisefield 11.07.2011 10:23 AM

Oh shit, brain fart. YOU'RE RIGHT!!! Karenology = Revisited. Don't know what I was thinking. Mixed up "Ology" with "Koltrane". :( I must have been having a retard moment.

I actually prefer the name "Karenology".

EVOLghost 11.07.2011 10:47 AM

Ummm if we're talkin' abuot the Karens....err....I prefer Koltrane. Only by a little bit.

rain on tin, Sympathy, Karen Revisited.

noisereductions 11.07.2011 10:49 AM

see?

baby bulldog 11.07.2011 12:30 PM

Right after 9/11 they played at the Calvin and opened with Sympathy...then it was called Sylvia's Magic Chord....it's probably one the of the best concert moments I've ever had.

samuel 11.07.2011 07:52 PM

I always thought this song had too much going on. I would enjoy it so much more without Thurston's guitar (especially during the intro). Still, it's definitely an intriguing tune. Had Lee sang on it, it would be a stand out track for me.

Edit: Shared vocals between Lee and Kim would be the shit. I love those.

the ikara cult 11.07.2011 09:04 PM

it cushions the landing of unexpected harshness from the latter half of Murray St.

E. Noisefield 11.07.2011 10:26 PM

I swear.... SWEAR... that I hear horns (that's right- horns) in the intro part of the song, but the only horns on the album are credited to "Plastic Sun" or something.

The onyl real harshness on MS is "Plastic Sun". "Radical Adults..." is a classic SY jam that ends in a cacophony, but is mostly pretty smooth.

Neither do I.

Are you sure you're thinking of the right song? Last track on Murray Street? Kim vocal? 'bout 7+ minutes? Freaking awesome? But "too much going on"? I don't get that.

That's right.... the liner notes give horn credits to that, not "Plastic Sun". My mistake. Man, that's two in one thread. I'm the suck today.

But does anyone else hear horns (soft muted trumpets, sounds like) in Sympathy? Or am I just batshit crazy.

SonicBebs 11.08.2011 04:40 PM

i think its just sy magic tricking you into thinking their guitars and pedals are horns

i get the horn for Sympahty though, if that helps?

it took me a while to pick out the horns in Radical Adults, i presumed it was guitar skronk

I am pretty sure that Lee plays an organ on Sympathy-is that what you are hearing?

That's fine.

But just so you know, if you find it necessary to use "yr" due to some sort of admiration for Sonic Youth, Kerouac or the like, you should know it's a shortening of "your" and not "you're."

I know and dnt give a fuck.

E. Noisefield 11.09.2011 10:25 AM

I'm sure Kerouac and Sonic Youth were/are grammar Nazis, and would loathe anyone who misused the nonsensical abbreviation. lol.

E. Noisefield 11.10.2011 08:25 PM

Yes, Murray Street is SY's Abbey Road.

Why am I always comparing everything to the Beatles?

btw: i'm bored as fuck.

noisereductions 11.10.2011 10:39 PM

Murry St. is in my Top 5 SY albums. It might even be my 2nd fav.

It's ok.

EVOLghost 11.10.2011 11:19 PM

MUrray ST is too short. That's my only beef.

Naw, perfect length. Especially considering the length of the songs.

I haven't heard many of the sessions tracks or "b-sides" from MS, but I can't imagine putting anything else on there. It's pretty much perfect.

mos of the session stuff was instrumental stuff like Kali Yug EP, Demonlover tracks, "Street Sauce" and the Noho Furniture Session stuff that landed on Destroyed Room.

SonicBebs 11.11.2011 03:31 PM

destroyed room is fucking incredible album too

Wow, I haven't heard ANY of that stuff except for Demonlover and (obviously) Destroyed Room, which indeed is completely awesome, though it should have included earlier material and more of it.

Interested in uploading those recordings you mentioned?

As big an SY fan as I am, I've always pretty much stuck to the officials (albums and EPs), the SYRs, the side projects, and a few live shows.

EVOLghost 11.11.2011 06:03 PM

^ You must listen to Kali Yug Express. Coca Kamera Sutra is amazing.

all that shiz should be on stu's site.

You need to hear Kali Yug, and also "Choir Boy, Church Basement" from Thurston's HURRICANE FLOYD is basically an early acoustic instrumental version of "Rain On Tin."

Do you mean the site that had lots of official material available to download?

That had nothing to do with me, I want to make that 100% clear. Or are you talking about another stu?
