The new experimental New York scene

I'm really into that new experimental New York Scene these times... I already know Liars, Gang Gang Dance, Animal Collective, TV on the Radio, Celebration, Excepter, Double Leopards, Dragons of Zynth, !!! (in a sense...), The Double, First Nation, Black Dice... Any other band to tell me ?

PAULYBEE2656 09.09.2006 03:27 PM

go out and but "kill your idols" on dvd. it rules big time. one of the better documentaries ever released on any subject anywhere ever...

trust me!

PAULYBEE2656 09.09.2006 03:27 PM

new tv on the radio album is poor i thought, not a patch on the first one.

Fox 09.09.2006 03:28 PM

My DVD player does not read zone 1 :(

PAULYBEE2656 09.09.2006 03:32 PM

its region 1 alright, just checked. ive got a multiregion player..... got my copy yesterday from the states! but it is being released in europe by christmas i believe

Fox 09.09.2006 03:33 PM

I'll check for it...

About the new TV on the Radio album, I don't think it's as weak as everybody tell it is... I really love it, not as much as the first, but almost... I Was A Lover et Blues From Down Here are fantastic

PAULYBEE2656 09.09.2006 05:21 PM

i suppose its harsh for me to judge on just one listen. only got it the other day! im gonna stick it in the car in the morning and let it flow from there!

that's stupid, most of those bands don't even play together.

but other ny bands: orthrelm, no-neck blues band, magik markers, early man, fireball.

atari 2600 09.09.2006 11:33 PM

I like those three Brooklyn bands. TV on the Radio is so-so. There is no "new New York scene" though although there is a bit of a thing going on in Brooklyn. New York City music has been dead as a doornail as far as a real deal for a ridiculous number of years, but yeah, momentum has been building for a few years now.
Magik Markers...I can fart out better shit than that if my guitar is tuned similarly.

Everyneurotic 09.09.2006 11:38 PM

yeah, magik markers suck; it's been said. seems most people have traded them for be your own pet.

drrrtyboots 09.09.2006 11:55 PM

these days, everything "experimental" is in brooklyn. or just a lot of noise shit that you probably don't care for. magik markers and hella are not from ny.

Everyneurotic 09.09.2006 11:56 PM

prurient is from ny, carlos giffoni too.

williamsburg sucks.

I haven't been able to find it either.

PAULYBEE2656 09.10.2006 03:40 PM

its just out this wek in the states and before christmas in europe...

trading magik markers for byop. a bit like trading radiohead for coldplay. magik markers arent nyc although base themselves there. granted they arent the most technically gifted people in the world and maybe thats why i like em. every listen is a challenge, its fresh and different.... thats my defence of the mms, granted i know i am becoming a member of an ever dwindling minority of mm fans here, maybe i dont wanna grow up!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 09.10.2006 03:43 PM

There is too a "New New York Scene"

Well, there will be:

Everyneurotic 09.10.2006 05:23 PM

hahahaha, those bands will open for sonic youth's heads at madison cube garden.

Cantankerous 09.10.2006 05:31 PM

well i'm moving there in just over a month so i guess i'll be right in the middle of it.

I think Mick lives in D.C. and Josh moved to NY maybe?

krastian 09.12.2006 12:23 AM

Maybe....I'm really not sure. Either way they rule. I haven't seen them in a few years.

golden child 05.05.2008 01:36 AM

ahlzagailzehguh, halflings, yellow tears, ffh, prurient, carlos giffoni, i'm actually surprised there isn't alot more going on in new york.

First Nation are the worst band I have ever seen live. They could hardly play their instruments. There were people heckling them and I didn't even feel bad for them because if I was that piss poor I'd expect people to heckle me too.

atsonicpark 05.05.2008 10:40 AM

almost every band listed on this thread sucks. almost.

i blame rudy guilliani.

atsonicpark 05.05.2008 10:44 AM

note i said almost.

batreleaser 05.05.2008 11:01 AM

liars arent even a ny band anymore, they moved back to la and record in berlin. gang gang dance is pretentious and dumb, i liked them for a week. animal collective is amazing. tv on the radio has made some really pretty pop songs and good vocals and good production, so they get an a ok in my book. excepter is lame and so are all those other bands.
