Stupid Library and Book Stores

Why don't they have any books on Johan Gutenberg!!!??? He invented the printing press! You'd think they'd have something.

I have a week to find a biography and write a 5-7 page essay and make a 15 minute oral presentation.

maybe look up his archenemy fuchs-- the financer of gutemberg's experiments and the one who profited from them after he fucked gutemberg in the ass. and not in a sexy way.

Pookie 08.29.2006 06:30 PM

Can't you just use the internet? For the irony if nothing else.

!@#$%! 08.29.2006 06:31 PM

oh sorry. i checked the wikipedia and it's FUST.

well cocks, there is a blibliography @ the bottom of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Gutenberg

porkmarras 08.29.2006 06:32 PM

Practicality.

Alex's Trip 08.29.2006 06:32 PM

I can, but it is required that I have a biography too.

k-krack 08.29.2006 06:32 PM

that damn ingrate bastards.

!@#$%! 08.29.2006 06:33 PM

pest

the bio is listed

you could also use encyclopaedias no? ever heard of those? :P

!@#$%! 08.29.2006 06:35 PM

man im in a foul mood. i should follow gutemberg's example & spend all my money on alcohol.

Alex's Trip 08.29.2006 06:36 PM

They don't have anything that I can't find online, and I don't know if an encyclopedia counts. I just need a book dedicated to him because my teacher wants us to have one.

Alex's Trip 08.29.2006 06:37 PM

Gutemberg?

I already wrote about Fust...

acousticrock87 08.29.2006 06:38 PM

Go to amazon.com, find one, get the information on it (publisher, author, etc.), and put it in your bibliography. Then make the reference up. Just use it for a general fact that you know the book will have. They won't call you on stuff like that. Not in high school, at least.

Pookie 08.29.2006 06:39 PM

Can't you order one from a library. You can do that in libraries in the UK. They'll get books from any library in the country for a very small fee.

Or order from a bookshop, there's loads available (over here at least).

!@#$%! 08.29.2006 06:39 PM

oh it's the M/N thing yes

i learned his name in spanish

hey pendex what language do you natively speak?

Alex's Trip 08.29.2006 06:40 PM

I would do that, but the teacher wants us to have the book and actually show it to him.

Lame, I know.

I did, and still hasn't come.

acousticrock87 08.29.2006 06:42 PM

Ah. That blows. You have no way of ordering it? Honestly, if you just tell him your problem, he should work something out for you. Especially if the topic was assigned to you. If not, think about changing it. You aren't doing anything wrong within your control so there's not much you can do about it. I see no reason a teacher would penalize you, and you seem like someone teachers would find agreeable.

!@#$%! 08.29.2006 06:43 PM

get yourself an old copy of encyclopedia britannica

that shit used to be written by geniuses as a matter of fact, back in the day the articles were amazing (according to borges anyway).

well look up books on the history of printing, foo.

another option would be on important figures of the rennaissance.

or something.

M/N: see look: http://www.hf.ntnu.no/anv/Finnbo/tek...o/Internet.htm

your teacher is right as most people rip their shit off the internet. once i had these 2 flakes show up with the same paper. unbelievable.

acousticrock87 08.29.2006 06:44 PM

Also, find the reference section of the library. You can't take the books out of the building, but you can copy them - if worst comes to worst. They'll almost certainly have stuff on him there.

Alex's Trip 08.29.2006 06:45 PM

The thing is, school hasn't started yet. At the end of 9th grade we were given a paper thing that gave all that crap that I told you and "failure to complete on the first day of school results in gettting dropped from the class". So I have to show up with something. I am still waiting on that damn book to show up. I am writing as much as I can.

I don't know if I'll be able to make it 5 pages at 1.5 spaced. I could go 1.75 spaced and 12.5 font (I know I am a madman). You can't really tell the difference but it does make it longer.

Alex's Trip 08.29.2006 06:47 PM

But I hate doing homework.

Haha. I'm going. I'm going. I'm going...

In a couple minutes....

!@#$%! 08.29.2006 06:51 PM

oh by the way--

librarians can be QUITE helpful and able to dig out stuff you wouldn't ever dream of finding. don't be afraid to ask one to locate this stuff for you.

acousticrock87 08.29.2006 06:55 PM

Ya I used to think that the librarians just looked stuff up on computers and scanned your card. But there are usually entire sections you're unaware of - and even if you were aware of them, you may not know how to navigate them - and the librarians can show you around.

porkmarras 08.29.2006 06:58 PM

Moste librarians i've known are much helpful folks.Listen, matey, you don't sound as serious about finding such book as you think you are.Fuck it!Basically.

Pookie 08.29.2006 07:00 PM

Porky, the later it gets, the more you sound like one of them foreigners that post here, with your broken English.

porkmarras 08.29.2006 07:03 PM

Must be the alcohol(was it correct english?).

I did ask the librarian, and he said there weren't any books on him that they had. I ordered a couple. In the meantime, since I wanted a book as quickly so I could get my work done, I went to Barnes and Nobel, and a different library, and they didn't have any either.

it's true that books on him are scarce. years ago i was attempting to write an article based on him for a magazine, and discovered that there is not much written about him. and that was at the library of congress. however as you heard reference books are the place to go in these situations. so your librarian might be a dumbfuck. there are a few of those in my (current) town. i could teach them a thing or two.

you could also print the library search page with no results & bring it to your teacher. ha ha.

but information there is available, & plenty.

i can't remember where i read about fust & gutemberg. it was kind of hilarious and pathetic at the same time.

okay i gotta go. have fun.

ni'k 08.29.2006 07:13 PM

librarys are dusty, they slow you down. everyone there looks kinda faded. everytime i ever went the people all look like they go home to strange, sexual deviance. in the new library in my town there is a little room were all the homeless and neglected elderlies go to read newspapers. i would skip school and read there, those were the days. desperately lonely, escaping into phillip k. dick. one time a dude kept lookin at me, he followed me outside when i went for a smoke. he looked like old piss. he grunted about going to get drunk down by the river, i did, he had no money so i bought him cheap wine. he told me about how his ex wife had fucked him over and left him for some other dude. he sounded gentle and helpless with her. he told me about his life. it seemed so grey and so overwhelmingly bleak and small, he had no dreams, not one aspiration or glimpse of anything beyond his everyday. he was just down and had this "oh well" attitude. i tried to spark some thoughts of oppurtunity and future in him but it wasnt happening. i can remember this image of him sitting in the rain, with the grey bleak sky beside the black murky river, just deadened.

few weeks later i heard that he was dead.

Well of course there are books availabe. But I can't acquire any of them without purchasing and ordering them and getting them 1 days before I have to have my essay done, which isn't what I want.
