Lee Is Free...

When I first became sonic, I couldn't tell the difference between Thurston and Lee's voice for some reason. Now the difference is fucking day and night. Wish Fulfillment.............Mote................true beauty. I know there are threads started on who likes Kim songs or Thurston songs better..........but who likes the lee songs the best? He only has a handful in the SY library compared to Kim and Thurston, but who likes his songs the best?

thethuthinnang 07.09.2006 12:52 PM

Semi off topic: Does anyone have a list of Lee's songs?

I'm from Liverpool and I still can't tell the difference.

acousticrock87 07.09.2006 03:16 PM

I can't tell the difference between Paul and Lennon. I've never had trouble with Thurston and Lee, but I was talking to my friend about them yesterday (he's a relatively new fan) and he stopped me at some point and said, "Wait, there's two male singers?"

paco 07.09.2006 03:29 PM

Lee's songs are ALWAYS the best on each SY record.

That's exactly what I want. Thanks.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.09.2006 04:50 PM

I think he is the best singer.

mushmanski57@hotmail.com 07.09.2006 05:13 PM

He is definitely the best singer, I think. And no, I couldn't tell Thurston and Lee apart at first, but now I can easily. Anyone know why Lee doesn't get as many songs as Thurston or Kim? Is it a lack of writing output?

By the way, anyone else think the fact that Nic Fit and Creme Brulee are on Dirty, yet Genetic is not, is totally fucked up? I know I do.

I read in Confusion is Next that Thurston said SY was originally a place for him and Kim to write songs, so Lee always has the last slots. I think he threatened to quit over Genetic not being on there, as well as the production of Dirty.

Alex's Trip

you forgot "Paper Cup Exit" :D

mushmanski57@hotmail.com 07.09.2006 09:20 PM

Ah, that's probably because Alex copied + pasted that list from the Mustang site, which the Song Section hasn't been updated since the Murray Street era.

And it sure does suck Lee doesn't get more songs (another reason I love Daydream Nation). At least he didn't leave the band though!

Shit. I added in Rats, but I guess I forgot Nurse wasn't on there.

Cantankerous 07.09.2006 09:42 PM

Ohhhh, Lee is my favorite. He doesn't have enough songs.

acousticrock87 07.09.2006 10:59 PM

I'm reading his Jrnls80s thing. It's pretty badass. I really want to get East Jesus now. They have several of his CDs at the record store down here.

Cantankerous 07.09.2006 11:00 PM

We do now at work, thanks to my bitching and moaning.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.09.2006 11:02 PM

skiesfalling 07.09.2006 11:13 PM

Paper Cup Exit was my favorite off Sonic Nurse. I don't know if I always prefer his stuff, but it's usually a strong point of the album. I got the impression that the upcoming solo record is going to be more rock/songwriter based, but I could be wrong.

Lee's songs are always my favorites. I saw hiw playing Drift in Brussels in april and it was my favorite show ever. Karen Koltrane and Hoarfrost are two of my three favorite sonic youth's songs.

Hah, yeah. I've played Miniature Golf in New Brighton. And had fish and chips. Very english.

Shaka 07.11.2006 06:05 AM

Lee is great. The first time i ever heard Lee's voice was when i bought A Thousand Leaves in 98, and it was Hoarfrost. I didn't know SY at the time but i was an R.E.M. fan and at first listen, i thought the singer was Michael Stipe ! Sometimes Lee sounds like him, at least in this song. I had to check the liner notes to see it was a guy named Lee Ranaldo, silly me ;)

sonic sphere 07.11.2006 12:14 PM

lee's songs are my favourite too

I just picked that up a few days ago, not knowing what it was. I was shuffling through a stack of 7"s at Rhino and saw it. There's no title, it just says Sonic Youth. Obviously I couldn't go wrong. I still need a frickin' record player...

I really like Jrnls80s. Some of it's hard to get my head around, but it's better than I expected. His entries are pretty emotional, but very abstract. It starts a little before Sonic Youth started, but he didn't write much until around '85.

trainyard bliss 07.11.2006 02:08 PM

on most days, i would say lee is my favorite, but part of it is because his output is limited in comparison to thurston's and kim's. i have east jesus--i love it. what's this jrnls80s thing and how do i access it?

acousticrock87 07.11.2006 02:14 PM

It's a published book of his journal entries/letters/poems/thoughts from 1980-1989.

kingcoffee 07.11.2006 09:13 PM

I'm really surprised that a lot of you thought that Lee and Thurston were the same person when you head their singing. I immediatley heard the differemce in singing. And although when I fisrt started listening to them I didn't know the names of the band members, I knew the difference between Lee's and Thurston's vocals.

kingcoffee 07.11.2006 09:13 PM

Also, Lee's songs are better than Thuston's and Kim's, although I love and value all members of the band.

touch me i'm sick 07.11.2006 09:54 PM

i feel like the instrumentals sound so much better underneath lee's spoken stories

But I bet if Lee did as many songs as Thurston, and vice versa, that Thurstons songs would probably seem better. Thurston can't consistently put out great stuff at the rate he does. But Lee doesn't sing much, so he can.
