That shit is pretty fucking bad when yr aftershocks are goddam 6.9 on the Richter scale.
Hope all are good. Much of thecountry is without basic services, much less internets...

DeadDiscoDildo 02.27.2010 01:22 PM

Yeah this was a monster of a quake but not too many have been killed. It was outside the main city.

Ridiculous how much more powerful this is than the haiti earthquake yet that took a shit load more lives.

All about location.

floatingslowly 02.27.2010 01:25 PM

yes I was just thinking about them too.

and also Oz. start climbing.

davenotdead 02.27.2010 02:54 PM

as if tornadoes, ice storms and inbred walmart clerks weren't bad enough...

It would be kinda scary if only the SY fans in Chile were OK.

ybag_girl 03.01.2010 12:18 AM

uh, what?

phoenix 03.01.2010 02:28 AM

big earthquakes > big waves > end of world.

This last one wasn't nearly big enough. We had off coastal warnings, japan had up to 3m waves.

I'm joking. half.

Chilean Quake May Have Shortened Earth Days

The Feb. 27 magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile may have shortened the length of each Earth day.

JPL research scientist Richard Gross computed how Earth's rotation should have changed as a result of the Feb. 27 quake. Using a complex model, he and fellow scientists came up with a preliminary calculation that the quake should have shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second).

Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis. Gross calculates the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis (the axis about which Earth's mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth’s figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet).

By comparison, Gross said the same model estimated the 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake should have shortened the length of day by 6.8 microseconds and shifted Earth's axis by 2.32 milliarcseconds (about 7 centimeters, or 2.76 inches).

Gross said that even though the Chilean earthquake is much smaller than the Sumatran quake, it is predicted to have changed the position of the figure axis by a bit more for two reasons. First, unlike the 2004 Sumatran earthquake, which was located near the equator, the 2010 Chilean earthquake was located in Earth's mid-latitudes, which makes it more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis. Second, the fault responsible for the 2010 Chiliean earthquake dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 Sumatran earthquake. This makes the Chile fault more effective in moving Earth's mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis.

Gross said the Chile predictions will likely change as data on the quake are further refined.

once filled with water, the Three Gorges Dam in China will lengthen our day by 60 billionths of a second.

it all comes out in the wash.

SONIC GAIL 03.04.2010 10:21 AM

I watched some show the other day on the science channel that said the moon is moving away from the earth. The moon's orbit diameter increases by 1.5" per year. They say this makes the days a little longer. so i guess it does even out.

floatingslowly 03.04.2010 10:32 AM

yes, one day the moon will be gone.

this won't happen before Mars' two moons crash into its surface, cracks a chunk off, and sends it flying our way.

it's all happened before. how do you think the moon was formed?

floatingslowly 03.04.2010 10:34 AM

.....gawd I wish I could watch Phobos and Deimos fall.

jennthebenn 03.04.2010 10:46 AM

Give and take. That's all life is.

Rob Instigator 03.04.2010 11:22 AM

flotz, when we upload our consciousness onto highly self-repairing android bodies we can enjoy the moons crashing on mars.

the moon will "soon" (in universe terms) be too far out to properly cover the sun during eclipses. then, instead of a perfect eclipse, we will see a ring of fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SeaBasket 03.04.2010 11:50 AM

Yeh Sweet aboot tha moon. Hope them chilli motherfuckas is ok. If not i wil arrivez soon and kiull thems myselves, 2 make up for wat nature cannut doez.

I envy all you SYGers in Chile. I mean I've got a lot to say mahalo for, but with all of those tsunamis you little dudes and dudettes just got a chance to surf the perfect wave. And that is just tasty.
