Take a step inside THE RAPE TUNNEL.

http://www.yesbutnobutyes.com/archiv...pe_tunnel.html

So... Richard Whitehouse, an artist from Ohio is constructing a piece called The Rape Tunnel. It's an installation in a gallery, a long narrowing tunnel that can be walked through, and he's promising that anybody who enters it during the exhibition, he'll attempt to rape.
"In 2007 at the Seward Projects Space in Columbus, I had my first breakthrough with an installation that was to be the prototype for this current one. It was called THE PUNCH-YOU-IN-THE-FACE TUNNEL. It was the same set-up as THE RAPE TUNNEL except at the end of the tunnel I’d punch the subject in the face instead of raping him or her. The impetus was completely reactionary to the current state of art, and motivated by pure frustration.

As it turns out, I ended up breaking the nose of the third person to crawl through the tunnel, an aspiring model. She went to the hospital and eventually sued me. Her modeling career was put on hold. The civil case was long and drawn out and the matter still hasn’t been resolved. To this day she still has unpaid medical bills. The point of this long aside is that all this took place two years ago, and I’m still having an impact on this young lady’s life, something not many other artists could claim about their work

Rape seemed like the next logical step."
There's more of this on the Artlurker site, including a Q&A where the artist goes into pretty graphic detail about his intention. It's clear from the piece that part of his objective is to generate discussion, protest, anger and debate, and I'm more than willing to play my part by posting a link here. But I think I'll forgo the show itself.

I always think this sort of thing, and the ensuing 'discussion' that follows it, tends to be incredibly desperate. He could always leave an impact without being a twat, or without being this particular sort of twat, but I'm not going to walk through his tunnel so all is well.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 04:46 AM

Sounds hot.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 04:50 AM

It's fake, right?

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 04:51 AM

definitely fake

Indeed, but what gets me about this particular piece is that the impetus behind it, he says, was a frustrated reaction to contemporary art which just sounds so circular. At least it made me chuckle.

Trasher02 09.30.2009 05:01 AM

Too bad it's fake. Seems like a funny idea haha.

It's like Charlie Brooker complaining about tv and then making that crap panel quiz thing.

"Rape Tunnel" is how I described the tunnels and under the archways of central [park when I was there a few months ago. "There's rape tunnel number 4."

If you build it I will cum.

notyourfiend 09.30.2009 10:19 AM

"art" just shriveled up and died.

godsfavoritedog 09.30.2009 10:25 AM

"Rape Tunnel" would be one hell of a band name.

Tunnel Of Rape

ploesj 09.30.2009 11:21 AM

would be funny if it was real. and indeed, people would be stupid enough to walk through it.

notyourfiend 09.30.2009 11:24 AM

i seem to the be only person on this forum who thinks that rape is never funny, under any circumstance.

kierkegaarden 09.30.2009 11:30 AM

What was it Hegel said,

A man judges a work of art according to the measure of his insight and feeling.

Insert joke.

That's why it's inherently funny material, because it shouldn't be.

notyourfiend 09.30.2009 11:39 AM

I have a very dark sense of humor but i still don't find rape/torture/human suffering funny. It is not okay to be joked about in a public setting because it is so trivializing. Plus, it's not just a joke - there are obvious psychical repercussions here. I am not one for public censorship, but I would hope that "artists" would know when to stop. I hate humanity.

Rob Instigator 09.30.2009 11:46 AM

a donkey assraping adolf hitler would be HILARIOUS.

the "art " in question above however, Not funny, and quite simple-minded.

Agreed.

On another note: ever since I was raped, I've found rape humor pleasing and its opposition morally offensive.

What dark sense of humor is there that doesn't include human suffering?

Is animal rape funny to you?

Rob Instigator 09.30.2009 01:30 PM

fake or real, it is still "art"

conceptual art is "fake" too

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.30.2009 01:39 PM

Not really, but whatever.

FreshChops 09.30.2009 01:52 PM

that looks like a great place for photo sessions! All those white walls and wind, I can see this thing getting used for photography... if nothing else.

nicfit 09.30.2009 01:54 PM

I think he thinks it's a fake meaning: "the artist wouldn't actually do what he said", while it's more a fake meaning: "hoax!".
Unless he's stating that even hoaxes are a form of art etc etc.

well you can wonder if it's still rape when a person goes through that tunnel, knowing that someone inside is going to try and have sex with him.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 01:59 PM

*listens to Rapeman*

sup

Rob Instigator 09.30.2009 02:17 PM

kim's gordon's panties

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 02:24 PM

rape meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Tokolosh 09.30.2009 04:01 PM

What makes him think he wouldn't get raped in that tunnel.
That would be funny.

Shit art, hoax, whatever.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 04:06 PM

everything is art.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 04:07 PM

Also, everything sucks.

tesla69 09.30.2009 04:09 PM

this kind of soulless shit it going to turn me into a Straussian - truly our liberal culture contains the seed of its own destruction.
