Coffee

What coffee do you drink?

Though these are not the varieties, I just found some Whole Bean Certified Fair Trade Organic Yirgacheffe Ethiopian coffee at Target under its Archer Farms brand... fucking delicious coffee, I used to have to go all the way to little ethiopia an hour from my house to get some imported Ethiopian coffee from Ethiopians directly..

I also had to buy this before I found the target brand

(the baller shit, costs $20 a pound! i can only hope the Ethiopians get a piece after they won their lawsuit two years ago)

(the regular shit.. again its not free trade so I can only hope starbucks is playing fair.. truthfully they helped to develop the Ethiopian luxury coffee market in the first place, they deserve some credit, before them Ethiopians sold their superior coffee on the NY market with all the nasty robusta bulk coffee used in folgers and the worlds finest coffee was going to waste..)

I stopped buying the coffee from my local importer for two reasons. a) its more convenient to get it closer and the Ethiopian domestic exporters are as corrupt as anywhere else so buying it directly from them wasn't necessarily helping anybody b) and I like to participate in the market, Ethiopian coffee needs to increase is share of retail sales otherwise Ethiopian coffee growers will just have to continue being robbed by the NY commodities market prices rather than the specialty coffee prices..

countries like Costa Rica used to sell their coffee on the NY market and lose up to 200% a kilogram on the deal, so they branched out with co-ops and started selling their coffee on the specialty market. This is EXACTLY what Ethiopians are doing and it is working.. I love Ethiopian coffee, it is the birthplace and natural origin of coffee, everywhere you find good coffee mimics the natural conditions of the Sidama/Kaffa region of southern Ethiopia (hence the name Coffee :) )

Help a poor Ethiopian coffee farmer, buy a bag of Ethiopian coffee every once in a while. Its good coffee, you'll love it.

i also don't have a coffee machine, i have an espresso machine because a regular coffee maker does not do the job right.

Glice 09.05.2009 01:20 PM

I cut coffee out of my diet. Now, this might sound ridiculous from a heavy-drinker (by SYG's gay standards), but I've felt much, much better since. I heartily recommend it.

dirty bunny 09.05.2009 01:24 PM

Folger's in the morning (Edward's is good too, but you can't get it here). Then in the afternoon whole bean coffee. I haven't it sourced it like the original poster, so I guess it's unfair-trade, malicious, brutal coffee but it tastes great!

more power too you! Do what you feel.. I cut out soda and bunch of corn-syrup products.. too too too much sugar.. but I drink my coffee jet black and I do love it so.. but I cut down to only 2 or 3 days a week..

alteredcourse 09.05.2009 01:27 PM

Glice, how much coffee were you drinking? Do you use anything else for energy, like B vitamins, fruits, ginseng?

drinking coffee is not just about energy, I don't even get 'perked up' from it, though it does have a distinct 'high' attached to drinking it.. You should get energy from sleep, water and a balanced diet high in fruit and greens.. if you have to get it from sugar/caffeine/vitamin boosts etc you have a problem and an inbalance which must be sorted out.. the whole drinking monster and energy drinks like soda pop is fucking insane to me, I am scared of the amount of these drinks being consumed.. everybody drinks that shit when they are thirsty!

2 or so cups an hour. I haven't 'replaced' coffee, but like SuchFriends... says above, good water, good diet and active lifestyle should keep you awake.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not captain healthcunt, but coffee is a bit of a shit addiction.

When I was younger I used to sit and drink pot after pot of coffee. Man I got so wired. I think I also got flushed and hot. Not fun. I've scaled back a lot since then. I'm down to 3 cups a day.

pbradley 09.05.2009 01:40 PM

Having a cup of Folgers right now. My first cup of coffee in a long while, actually.

shit like folgers, you know just pre-ground supermarket shit (especially when made in a coffee maker) just tastes weak to me.

tell me about it.. I tried some coffee the other day at a coffee shop restaurant, it was so terrible I couldn't drink it.. strictly whole bean. you have to grind it fresh.. it can even be old as long as its whole.. once you grind it you ruin it..

my espresso maker has the grinder built in, its fucking great and i got it for free!

its like this but not as new

tw2113 09.05.2009 09:50 PM

I've been buying beans roasted locally a lot lately, instead of stuff like folgers and whatnot. At best it gets grinded when I make the purchase.

noisereductions 09.05.2009 09:53 PM

I switch it up a lot man. A lot. Lately I've been very into Italian roasts the most. Followed closely by French (dark) roasts.

phoenix 09.05.2009 11:08 PM

I do buy from starbucks often.. and sometimes from smaller places organic or fairtrade coffees. As far as flavours go I love anything from south america in an espresso shot (probably because I used to work at sbux) All of my beans I like a fairly dark roast.
If I'm drinking brewed then african beans or a blend of african/south american are nicer. I like the SMELL of beans from asia the most, but generally don't like the taste when it's brewed. Asian beans in an espresso shot are hilarious. It's like drinking mud. Interesting. But still savoury spiced mud. Brewed or FP isn't near as bad.
I never buy ground coffee. Always whole bean and grind when I use it. There is no point otherwise.

Just drank my first cup in many years, actually. We're in Hawaii, and the local kona stuff my wife bought smelled too damn good not to try. It tasted it too, but immediately sent me to the bathroom, so I'll be loading up on the green tea at the grocery store soon...

automatic bzooty 09.06.2009 02:29 PM

i dunno. colombian folgers or some shit. it just makes anything better we get sporadically taste glorious though.

floatingslowly 09.06.2009 02:52 PM

monday through friday, I drink about 2 pots a day of Folgers (black - cream and sugar are for pussies who hate coffee).

weekends, rarely have any at all.

I'd mainline it if I could.

hell, if I cut out coffee, then I have to take a more serious look at worse habits. fuck that shit.

Satan 09.06.2009 02:56 PM

black coffee is for pussies who hate crack.

I'm a total pussy by the way.

This local roasting company's stuff mostly. It's not on the site but right now they sell something in honor of the local public radio station that is out of this world called WNCW Mountain Blend.

i rarely drink coffee at home, and by coffee i mean espresso shots.

nicola, segafredo, buondi, sical, delta...

i enjoy different blends, what really matters is the machine and the operator.
it's a grievous task when moving around, but once you find the right spot...
