What are the chances of someone calling the police if I play a gig in my house?
 

We still haven't finalised it yet, it would be either on a Friday or a Saturday, and with amplification reduced to a minimum. What if I let the neighbours know in advance (they are mostly students on either side of the house)?

It would be a mainly chaotic thing 'cause I've never played with my friend's on-off band before, and they are a style starkly different from mine. It's a fun thing more than anything.

The landlord lives far away. Do you think we would we incur the wrath of the law?

if your neighbours are ok with it, i don't think there's a problem. my brother rehearses with his band in our basement sometimes, even though the restaurant across the street has some tables in our garage (their customers hear the band very well)

I need more information. How many neighbors? Ages, roughly? Gender? How thick are your walls and what are they made of?

Neighbours are young and I don't know them, apart from one dude. Crowd would potentially be 30-40 people, or something like that.

I haven't got any house mates, one of them moved round the corner because he's found a bigger place. We intend using him as a singer.

Mmmm. So. The two factors sort of cancel each other, but the size of the crowd... that's a lot of people, so it could get pretty rowdy. I'd say that increases your chances of getting called on. It also doesn't help that you don't know your neighbors.

I'm recalculating and now figure that your chances are better than 3 out of 5, or 60 percent, that neighbors will call the cops.

With any luck, at least some of the neighbours will be out anyway. I would let them know though, just to be sure. I woulod think that with what you have planned, they would be OK with it. It would be less of a potential hassle than holding an all-night party.

How long is the set? I've been in situations where the cops have been called, and it seems that as long as you don't have a huge set, you should be able to pull off at least 45 minutes of live music.

I don't think the crowd would get rowdy. It will probably consist mostly of gayzz.

then again, I guess it also depends on the neighbo[u]rhood and how highly they value their peace and quiet. gated community vs. urban block, etc.

either way...fuck it! what can they do? arrest you? the worst that could happen is they tell you to stop.

I say go for it. Don't 'ask' your neighbors, just 'inform' them that you are having a jam session/party and you hope that they can deal with a night of debauchery.

If it is not a constant thing, I can't see it being an issue. Everyone has something to celebrate sometime.

If cops are called your neighbors are wankers. But that just adds to the memories in my opinion.

Did this twice, at two different places. One was deep in the woods. Both times got the cops called on me... if it was at like 5pm on a Friday, you could probably get away with it for a few hours. Anything past 8 (or if the music lasts more than a few hours), you might get the cops called on you. The cops would merely tell you to turn that shit off. Highly doubt arrests will be made.

Oh.. that reminds me... One time, Robe. decided to play for 24 hours straight. We played from 8 am until 9pm that night. AS SOON AS IT HIT 9PM, the cops came and shut us down. We played anyway, though quietly... and about 20 minutes later, they came back and said if they had to come back again they'd fine us. We ended up releasing the whole session as the "DOOM'S DAY" box set. Haha. (which ended up being 10 of the 13 hours because we took a little break in between hours to save the file -- it takes a LONG time to save 60 minute wavs in super high quality on a slow ass windows me computer!)

Depends on the relationship you have w/ your neighbours... and whether they like being dicks or not.

I know people who used to organise shows in their house. The only time they ever got in trouble with the law was during that one time when they announced it to the neighbours in advance by putting leaflets in their mailboxes... what they were basically doing was giving them a heads up about when to go call the cops.

But in your case with them being students/young people I guess (hope) it should be alright...

check out your local laws on noise pollution... here in aus if the cops come back for a third time they can confiscate all your gear... so if you have laws like that you can push it and stop after the second time...

I did one show like that in my porch - summer 2007 - got it all on video... we played 7 songs and that was it, I was afraid as hell that police could come down as wrath... it was about 25 mins of music... 30 attenders... great fun, I have it on video :)

I have called the cops on my own house-persons at 5 in the morning and pretended to be a neighbour when I wanted to sleep and they woudln't STFU. hehe. But, only after we'd stolen the speaker cables(their response was shoving bare wires in their laptop socket--> speakers), told them to turn it down multiple times, etc. Funny thing was, they'd all decided to light up about 4 minutes after I called.


But yes.. as long as you let your neighbours know, and in fact, I'd let the local cop shop know.. telling them you plan on having a 'party', you've let your neighbours know and it shouldn't be too hardcore. If you get in first, you generally wont be told to cool it unless its super late and they are called multiple times. The cops will first ask the caller if THEY have gone and asked the people to turn it down yet, and in most circumstances will tell them to go ask you to stop, before they will come over. Especially if they've already been told about it and they know you've told your neighbours. The last thing they can be f'ked doing on a friday night is going to a house where there is no violence/drugs (hmmmmm )telling people to just go to bed.. there are far more important things to be doing.

I just remembered when my neighbour called the cops on me because I wouldnt let him go under my house to look for his cat at 11pm on a saturday night. Police were not impressed w/him when they eventually showed up an hour and a half or so later.
