Funny Music/Albums/Bands
In acting it is a truism that doing comedy is harder than doing drama. There are many reasons for this, one being that in comedy, either the joke/gag/pratfall/line works or it doesn't. It is kind of clear-cut ad obvious when it does not work.
Music is tough to do funny. There are many acts that have a funny side to them, and yet others who are plainly trying to crack you up. making a song funny and good musically is even harder. when I was a little kid I would crack up every christmas because the would play "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" but the song itself, the music the tune is sung to, is generic crap. List me some of your favorite funny songs, or acts or records. I will start with Dead Milkmen, completely sophomoric, but taking it to unheard of new heights. I find their midle albums to be cock full of hilaritry, shit I still laugh hard to , to this day. My two favorites are Beelzebubba and Bucky Fellini. There are so many songs that had me rolling on the fucking floor on these albums, and not only that, but the music itself was snot-nose cow-punk of the highest order. I could just as easily rock out as crack up. plus they covered daniel johnston and did a great job with it. and they sounded like they hated everyone. what you guys got? |
LOVE Dead Milkmen. One of my all time favorite bands actually.
Descendents are hilarious sometimes. ..Fuckemos!!! Shat (of "I THREW UP ON HER CUNT" fame) The Whore Gives Head ("Fuck You God!") Anal Cunt |
do you mean funny lyrics, or music that is meant to sound funny?
|
yeah anal cunt takes the cake for me. big black is pretty funny too.
of course the descendents and screeching weasel. |
smog is funny
railroad jerk is funny the fall are funny sometimes the jesus lizard are funny guided by voices are funny harry pussy are funny lots of hiphop is funny |
Generally speaking (with rare exceptions), deliberately "funny" music is a stupid waste of time. Even if it's funny, it's funny ONCE and then it's just , well, crap.
A sense of humor interjected here and there in a "serious" musical project is OK (Nurse With Wound are great at this), but I really dislike "jokey" bands. |
C'mon, They Might Be Giants is the most seriously funny band out there. Prolly one of my fav three bands.
I love the picture on the back of my new hoodie--very timely. |
haha, oh yeah, the william shanter album "has-been".
Some jandek is funny! ...Jesus Lizard are hilarious. "ANY OTHER WAY OF LIVING-IIIII" |

ugly jacket for an ugly band.
|
McLuksy used to write some fucking hilarious lyrics.
|
the most I ever laughed at a song was when I put on this sun city girls song and layed down, starting to sleep to these random bangings of pots and pans and bizarre wind sound effects and shit. All this ridiculous avant-jazz shit. All of it a sudden, it stops and charles gocher goes, "what do you mean he was in his own little woooooooooooorld?" I laughed my ass off!!
|
Also, first time I did shrooms, I watched this:

Yeah, Has Been is such a damn fine album. Right up there with genre similar releases from Pat Boone (In a Metal Mood) and Black Velvet Flag (who've lounge version of "Institutionalized" smokes the original). Jandek has a brilliant sense of humor, agreed. Especially the "Paint My Teeth" tunes, but lots of the seemingly dark, despondent stuff too. There's a wink there for those who care to get it. I'm with Bytor Peltor on Chadbourne all the way too. And Camper Van Beethoven too, in moderation. Nobody's mentioned the Minutemen yet??? True comedy is always tragedy, and they knew it like nobody's business. Sun City Girls have a lot of brilliant comic moments, and in fact their whole career was sort of a Kabuki meets comedy routine on several levels. Going way back, I rather like Spike Jones and His City Slickers. And though I don't want to start the whole Zappa debate again, the Mothers of Invention were the perfect blend of comedy, rock, and experimental music at their best. |

Some of D. Boon's rants are great. Also, Bob Pollard released an album (two, actually) of stage banter, some of which is great.

I as well. Flood might be one of my top 10 favorite albums ever. |
Throbbing Gristle are definitely a humor act from the name of the group, to calling an album 20 Jazz Funk Greats, to writing little ditties like "Hamburger Lady".

brainbombs are funny and depressing in equal measure. whitehouse are funny, especially if you saw them live, consumer electronics is funny too. |

witty lyrics can be funny, or sometimes when you can tell a band has a sense of humour although there's nothing particularly comedic about them (e.g. harry pussy) but what i dislike is what i think old Savage was refering too, bands who try to be comedians as well as musicians. re: Harry Pussy, I once read an interview with them and the guitarist said that he has a recurring dream in which he is laughing whilst being chased by an angry crowd, and that that kind of explains Harry Pussy, it's a sentiment i find very agreeable. |
Butthole Surfers obviously, early boredoms, also obviously. Napalm Death's scum is fun to listen to. I haven't heard much grindcore, but as a genre I find it almost comedic. Both times I've seen Anal Cunt were funny, because of the overall bad taste and retarded atmosphere. Darkthrone seems to be humouristic for a black metal band.

I remember seeing the Dead Kennedys way back when a certain Madonna song was popular. It was at this concert that I discovered, a moment too late, that I should remove my glasses before entering the dance floor (on the positive side, everyone was really helpful in trying to keep me up off the floor while I attempted to look for 'em). So I had to drive home with sunglasses, drunk, while singing "Papa don't preach, I'm gonna eat my baby, gonna eat it with gravy" at the top of my lungs.

I always thought of Mudhoney as funny guys writing many funny songs.

The song at the top destroyed me last night, but I probably won't listen to it again. I faintly know the chap, nice bloke. Some funny in music is ok. I find I have quite a high tolerance for things like 2 live crew, but I couldn't ever abide things that could be described as 'wacky' or 'zany'. Ivor Cutlor I'm a big fan of, but I never really found out if there was anyone else out there like him. Hmm. |
maybe im missing the point of this thread...anyway...
![]() ![]() actually the last one isnt that funny anymore ![]() |
