The few, the proud, the independent record stores. With the rest of the economy joining the music business in a perilous free fall, indie shops are getting hit hard right now. But help is on the way in the form of the second annual Record Store Day, which will be celebrated April 18 at mom and pop favorites around the country. As an incentive to get customers into the shops, Matador is releasing several sweet limited edition vinyl specials.
There's a 7" with Sonic Youth covering Beck's "Pay No Mind" on the A-side and Beck doing SY's "Green Light on the flip, a previously unreleased LP of a 1997 Pavement gig from Cologne, Germany and another 7" with Jay Reatard's "Hang Them All" on the top and Sonic Youth's "No Garage" on bottom. Start drooling.
Only 2,500 copies of each record will be available at participating Record Store Day spots, so plan your camp-out accordingly. Nice and orderly-like:

Now that I've had a moment to calm down: "Pay No Mind" is a brilliant track. And probably one of the strangest choices for SY. So I'm super, super excited. And what the fuck is "No Garage" ???

I spoke to a buyer at work..and apparently this next year more stores are doing it than 2008. Stores apparently have to order these just like they would any other piece of product...

Oh, coolly coolly cool cool - One of my local stores is gonna have them too (according to the "participating stores" list). I'm gonna have to give them a call and get a copy reserved.

To be honest, if there's 2500 copies of each, I can't see them being too hard to get hold of, even if you're not close to a participating store (though it might mean paying slightly more on eBay or something) - there were 1500 white copies of the Erase Errata split, and they're still pretty easy to find for about $5-$10.

pay no mind is a great track

I just got into Jay Reatard last month and I really like his stuff.

I would have not connected him to Sonic Youth but since there's a record to be released with both of them, I guess I'll have to put my hands on it.

And see what that Parisian store looks like.

Yeah my friend and I are gonna try and get one in Glasgow also. Just don't take the last copy before I get to it! Hehe.

I just contacted one of the participating stores (Rough Trade in London), and they said that the singles are only going to available in the store (not by mail or online order) on the actual Record Store Day (which, thankfully, is a Saturday).
