Sonic Youth ready new album

Sonic Youth

Thurston and co aim to release the new album this June

Sonic Youth are in the final stages of recording their new album.

The band say they hope to release the record, which currently has a working title of 'The Eternal', this June.

Thurston Moore told NME's sister publication Uncut that the band were focussing on making "a record replete with juicy supersonic songs!"

The record will be the band's first featuring newly-written material since 2006's 'Rather Ripped'.

As NME.COM previously reported, the band's Kim Gordon is in the process of launching her own clothing line, Mirror/Dash.

'The Eternal' will be Sonic Youth's first release on Matador Records.

fucking awesome.

This Is Not Here 01.13.2009 12:21 PM

Hooray, a vague date is set!

Kosako 01.13.2009 12:30 PM

It's sounds like lies to sell to me. I'll wait for a month or two to believe that.

When I said "it's sounds like lies to sell to me" I mean the news from the magazine. Probably it's true, but I prefer MOSHE news. They are all true from the beginning.

jennthebenn 01.13.2009 12:59 PM

Yeah, remember when Moshe told us all about the Sub Pop single? Turned
out to be the best thing I'd heard from SY in years!

bullshit. I mean I like Moshe's news. but I like when someone other will find something interesting. Moshe's got free time , at least. :)

thanks Phantophobia for excellent news, can't wait to June... I was hoping that they will realese it earlier, why it will take so many time? they have almost full material...

Magic Wheel Memory 01.13.2009 01:33 PM

Thanks for posting this, Panto! Juicy supersonic songs are exactly what I was hoping for on the next record! :)

Moshe 01.13.2009 01:35 PM

I like Pantophobia's news. Don't know about his girlfriend. :)

Here is the info I have:

The band has been working in their recording studio w/ John Agnello, Aaron
Mullan and Mark Ibold.
They are about to complete overdub recording and start mixing this weekend
for their new record tentatively titled 'The Eternal'.

The album will possibly be completed by the end of this month for a possible
June 2009 release on Matador.

it is possible that the band will tour this June.

Antagon 01.13.2009 01:48 PM

Sounds awesome! I like the title, even though it is a simple one. Thanks for the additional info Moshe.

BushIsAPsycho 01.13.2009 01:55 PM

this is amazing news
i can't wait to see the artwork too

ahahah

mil_pl 01.13.2009 02:11 PM

yeah I'm wondering when some cover art will surface, at the main page or somewhere else.. they will give us some excerpts for sure, when they will finish mixing it.

you remember when thurston finished his album 'trees outside..' mp3 where very quickly on torrents, and I remember that he was releasing material two months later, or even more. (?)

Danny Himself 01.13.2009 03:32 PM

The Eternal what?

What a terrible title. This album should be called "Quadraphonic Jizzbomb".

viewtiful_alan 01.13.2009 04:22 PM

Rolling stone.com just picked up the same story, so chances are its not just made up.,

kenning 01.13.2009 04:33 PM

"The Enternal" is the name of a Joy Division song.

Danny Himself 01.13.2009 04:36 PM

Terrible title, then.

ihateyouth 01.13.2009 04:41 PM

I hope it has nothing to do with Joy Division.

dazedcola 01.13.2009 04:54 PM

hey so is matador doing that "order an album early and get extra stuff" offer for The Eternal?

mil_pl 01.13.2009 05:16 PM

hope so.

greedrex 01.13.2009 05:21 PM

buy early, get late.

horrible title;

Goo was supposed to be called Blow Job though.

There is hope.

al shabbray 01.13.2009 05:25 PM

hope they will play a lot of the new stuff in april live

max 01.13.2009 06:07 PM

blow job sounds better than this one

jennthebenn 01.13.2009 06:16 PM

"The Eternal Blowjob"--I'd buy it.

Hell yeah.

viewtiful_alan 01.13.2009 07:46 PM

Meh the Eternal is just cheesy more than really bad.

Some truly shit album titles:
How to dismantle an atomic bomb
That one fiona apple album.. you know the one
badmotorfinger
zombie birdhouse
stadium arcadium
experimental, jetset, trash, and no star (come on.. thats not an album title)
ultramega OK (I know its a joke but it still sucks)
ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch
Echoes, Paitence, Silence, Grace (again overlong and stupid)
chocolate starfish and the hotdog water
I'm sure I can think of more, those are just off the top of my head

I once got an awesome blow job to "The Diamond Sea" that felt blissfully eternal.

Death & the Maiden 01.14.2009 12:19 AM

I don't mind the title, probably because it reminds me of one of my favourite songs, Eternally Yours.

weed was involved, so there was no notion of time really.
good times!

repeater 01.14.2009 04:08 AM

I don´t care what they´ll end up calling the record as long as they fullfill the promise of "a record replete with juicy supersonic songs!"

feeling supersonic, give me gin&tonic

ZEROpumpkins 01.14.2009 04:10 AM

Sweet, that's like three years after RR, am I right?

ZEROpumpkins 01.14.2009 04:51 AM

It sounds like it's going to be a big album in terms of sound. Implied from the title, that is.

mrkingruss 01.14.2009 11:22 AM

The title is pretty poor.

I'm just glad a new album is coming our way.

SuperCreep 01.14.2009 11:23 AM

I still think it's a pretty weird album title for SY, but whatever. If it's good, it's good. The title doesn't mean much to me.

SYRFox 01.14.2009 11:40 AM

This title sucks. It sounds either Metallica-ish or Destiny's Child-ish . But not Sonic Youth-ish.

deflinus 01.14.2009 11:55 AM

im pretty sure if murray street didn't exist, and it was announced that their next album will called murray street, we'd all have the same reaction.

and murray street is a pretty tight album
