The Swirlies

I just found out about this band - surprisingly after seeing the description of them being a cross between SY and MBV.
Does anybody know this band and where to start? I'm enjoying some of the stuff I've heard on their myspaces so I just got their first and last albums on a whim. But I'm not sure if they're be all that great.

ricechex 01.06.2009 05:59 PM

hell yeah. you've come across one of my all time faves, one of the most underated, unknown, original bands. they're better than MBV. there's more to their songs. all of their output is excellent.

these are the main ones:

What to do about Them
Blondertoungue Audiobaton
Glittering World of Salons
Cat's of the Wild

they have a few ep's and what not, but those are the ones to def get a hold of..

i'm going to see them in NY next month..WOO!!!

Trasher02 01.06.2009 06:03 PM

I might buy one of those too, which one of those four is the best?

uhler 01.06.2009 06:06 PM

good stuff.

better than mbv.

I would prob start with Blondertoungue. It's the first full length. Then get Salons. That one's more slick, a better overall recording. Then follow up with What to do About them and Cats of the Wild Vol II. Whichever way, i am confident you'll love them and wonder why they are not more famous.

yesterday i searched info about the FEELIES and the SWIRLIES; so yeah both sound good.

haha you're making me all excited man.

They really are an amazing band. I have been listening to What to Do About Them non-stop as of late.

ALL of their major releases (except for the most recent) are available for free download through their own site, here...

GravitySlips 01.06.2009 06:15 PM

yeah the Swirlies are pretty good. I've only heard Blonder Tongue, but it's a great album.

auto-aim 01.06.2009 06:16 PM

That's what I bought was Cat of the Wild and then couldn't decide between Blondertounge and their second album and went at random... But I have since writing this thread found out that most of their music has been made available for free on their website at http://www.evil-office.net/swirlies/

Also, this classic post:

Okay, I'm writing songs for the new scissor shock album and it sounds like renaldo and the loaf meets autechre meets swirlies meets neurosis meets polvo meets boredoms basically.

Anyway, yeah, blondertongueaudiobaton is a "classic" album.

they just announced a couple east coast shows a few weeks ago. i've been into them for a year now and i'd never thought they'd ever play a show again. i have absoultey no idea what to expect, but even if they don't play their fan favorites, i'm always impressed by the band's 'leader' damon

for everyone else just getting into them, check out the sneaky flute remixes of their songs. they're fucking insane. i love them

GravitySlips 01.06.2009 10:05 PM

nice one, you're lucky.

i'm gonna dig out blonder tongue just now, it's been a while.

_slavo_ 01.07.2009 07:55 AM

Their music is too complicated for my liking, too many tempo changes, too many interludes, too many bridges, too much of everything.
They're like the Dream Theater of indie rock.
Hence not too interested.

Huh? You sure you got the right band?

atsonicpark 01.07.2009 10:21 AM

What he says is pretty accurate. They do have a lot of tempo changes, interludes, etc. Listen to "bell" for example. Their structures are very interesting. None of it sounds out of place to me... but I can see it being a bit off-putting to some people. I dunno.

ricechex 01.07.2009 10:52 AM

Yeah, i think Bell is a good example of that. But compared to say Polvo, i don't think they have that many tempo changes/parts. They cetainly are not virtuosos like Dream Theatre. Swirlies also have tunes where there are only a couple of parts. Their parts are just treated so differently sound wise, i think.

That's also something I didn't really want to say.

dazedcola 01.07.2009 01:04 PM

yea, theyre one of the bands thats cool to say they came from around boston (unlike aerosmith and boston). That song they did "pancake" is a shoegaze classic song right up there with "only shallow" and "leave them all behind". Get Blonder Tongue Audio Baton immediately.

atsonicpark 01.07.2009 01:11 PM

Yeah, Boston fucking rules. Anal Cunt, the Pixies, Swirlies, fuck yeah.

GravitySlips 01.07.2009 02:11 PM

^ and mission of burma!

i just listened to blonder tongue, awesome as ever. gonna download the rest from that site.

joe11121 01.07.2009 07:09 PM

yeah the swirlies are awesome!

Green Magnesium 01.08.2009 01:45 AM

Your friend's a smart one. (Not to say you're an idiot or anything.)
