What
What is wrong with this conversation?
Mother: Top Chef is on tonight! Alex: Um...cool? I hope you remember to record it... M: I hope so too, I think I already have it set. A: Well that's good I guess M: You've never watched it? A: Nope M: You should A: No, I don't have much time for new shows, and less interest in the ones I already watch. I'm trying to wean myself off of television. M: Maybe if you'd watch a little more TV, you'd be a little more...normal. You know, might not be so concerned and bothered with questions of the universe. Everyone needs a little numbing. Without physically altering their body. What is wrong with my family! |
That conversation is less than a degree from:
M: A gramme is better than a damn. Here, have some soma. |
Do you know on what page (in general) that is?
|
It sounds like you need to move out as soon as possible.
|
I don't have my copy with me. A little searching told me it appears in Chapter 6, although I do remember it being mentioned several times elsewhere.

hahaha, stop analyzing so much Alex! It's rotting your brain and making you "weird"
|
Not to make light of your situation, but I just realized that it is also less than one degree from this:
Doctor in Brooklyn: Why are you depressed, Alvy? Alvy's Mom: Tell Dr. Flicker. [Young Alvy sits, his head down - his mother answers for him] Alvy's Mom: It's something he read. Doctor in Brooklyn: Something he read, huh? Alvy at 9: [his head still down] The universe is expanding. Doctor in Brooklyn: The universe is expanding? Alvy at 9: Well, the universe is everything, and if it's expanding, someday it will break apart and that would be the end of everything! Alvy's Mom: What is that your business? [she turns back to the doctor] Alvy's Mom: He stopped doing his homework! Alvy at 9: What's the point? Alvy's Mom: What has the universe got to do with it? You're here in Brooklyn! Brooklyn is not expanding! Doctor in Brooklyn: It won't be expanding for billions of years yet, Alvy. And we've gotta try to enjoy ourselves while we're here! |
That's quite similar to other conversations actually.
"What does it matter if humanity, emotion, and civilzation is the by-product of a planet that can sustain life, Alex?" Not that I'm tearing my hair out over that, exactly. But words like that were uttered. |

"Because we have the potential of doing so much more than that, mom. Look at the idiocy of humanity and civilization" ![]() |
Where is the fun in being normal?
|
I heard or read something--probably NPR, that republicans are funnier than democrats likely because they think things are fine the way they are; dems think more about what is wrong.
|
"Why think about important stuff, when you should really be CONSUMING?"

"Without physically altering your body."
That was her main emphasis. TV is a good alternative to drugs, despite the fact that she described coping drug use perfectly, except with TV instead. |
Quote:
a) tv physically alters the body through lowering yr metabolism and also adjusting your brain chemistry into watch mode vs think mode. b) weed is better than tv, at the least, they compliment each other nicely. |
weed is infinately better than TV.
If it wouldnt make my partner scream, I'd get rid of our tv. only.. its also what we use for our computer/dvds.. so... eh. :( I probably would never want to part with those things. |
Just robo.
