I'm sure some of you have experience with bars.

So there's a good chance that I may be going up to Canada with a friend. It is our plans to go to the bars/pubs since we can't do such things in the states yet. I just have no idea how bar prices work. I don't drink beer so I'm expecting the price to be somewhat high. But on average how much does a shot of something like Jager or basic whiskey go for in a bar.

punkaspoo 11.13.2008 12:24 PM

don't buy yourself, wait for some chick to buy you drinks. maybe you'll get some sweet loving later on the dancefloor.

flophousefloozie 11.13.2008 12:44 PM

Depends where you'll be in Canada! (Toronto?)

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 11.13.2008 12:45 PM

I don't actually know. I guess it's at the most eastern part.

flophousefloozie 11.13.2008 12:49 PM

I haven't been to the east coast in ages, but I would advise you to expect to pay around $4.75-$6.50, depending on where where you go, and what you shoot.

In my opinion, it's much cheaper to purchase a 26 of rye, and have a few highballs. Then, have a beer or two when you go out.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 11.13.2008 01:00 PM

Cool.
I'm not used to paying so much it may be hard to split ways with my money. I usually pay five bucks towards some cheap shit and end of drunk. Oh well. At least I'll be in Canada.

Inhuman 11.13.2008 02:05 PM

yeah, it's about $5.50/drink for some of that good JD

mangajunky 11.13.2008 02:12 PM

the main question is dive bar or club?

Drinking and not smoking is no fun.
Is it allowed to smoke in bars in Canada?

Not really. There's outdoor shisha joints/bars, but that's about it.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 11.13.2008 09:33 PM

My pops use to bar-tend so I'll see what crazy good drinks I can dig up.

phoenix 11.13.2008 10:30 PM

I find it hilarious how much prices vary for spirit based drinks.

I'm not in canada, but I've paid anywhere between 5.50 and 12 $ for THE SAME DRINK depending on what bar I go to.

so I guess it would be the same anywhere. depends on the house as to what they charge. higher end places usually have higher end spirits and charge accordingly, but lots of lower end places still stock the higher end spirits.. and aren't anywhere near as expensive. hmm.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 11.13.2008 10:33 PM

A bit curious. How large is a drink?
If I got say a whiskey on the rocks or something. I've heard that that is the same as about two shots.

phoenix 11.13.2008 10:35 PM

a standard shot of spirits (in my country... Ive never thought about if its different internationally) is 30mls. and if you have it on ice its usually half the tumbler with ice and the shot over. Its two shots if you ask for a double. If you have your spirits with soda it or juice it will depend on what glass you get it in.. generally short tumbler or high ball. Im not a bar tender but have served drinks casually in my last job.. Im guessing the drink is in the region of 250mls plus ice plus the 30ml shot of spirit.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 11.13.2008 11:04 PM

I have no idea

Kloriel 11.13.2008 11:11 PM

good golly!i've paid $12 (equivalent) for entire nights out.

Dead-Air 11.13.2008 11:17 PM

Just be sure to tip with every drink. Usually a buck per drink. If you do, the bar staff will likely make your drinks stronger, so it's actually good economics. And if you don't they may decide to have it in for you.

Keep in mind you are drunk and they are sober and control the place - so you want to be friends with them at all costs. As they might well figure out you're from the states, you may be at a disadvantage to begin with.

when i buy a whisky for $5 bucks it's literally one shot

look, if you want to actually get drunk without paying out the ass predrinking a bit is basically the only way to do it seeing as how liquor store prices are pretty much half or less what you pay in a bar

yeah that's two pints here of sparkling ale here, but $12 for a whole night out, where was this... vietnam? my night out on the booze usually cost around $100-$150

DeadDiscoDildo 11.14.2008 12:21 PM

Dive bars/gay bars are where it's at. I'm not gay so sometimes I have to awkwardly turn down guys trying to start up a flirting session, but it's worth it....

GIN AND TONIC FOR $2.25

what the fUCK

edit: infact, it's more fun to drink with gays and women than straight guys and women. they're nicer and sometimes help you get laid! props to yall

Gotta love Mexico. They don't even care how old you are! I went there when I was 11 or so, and could have gotten drunk for even less than $12 (being young and cheap and all).

Kloriel 11.14.2008 02:33 PM

if there is a neon light sign outside shaped like an elderly walrus, do not venture forth.

RdTv 11.14.2008 03:23 PM

Pre-drink. Its cheaper, more bang for your buck and then you have money to tip and buy late night greasy pizza.

DeadDiscoDildo 11.14.2008 04:00 PM

Dead-Air and RdTv both speak the truth. haha

Good idea.

RdTv 11.14.2008 05:15 PM

Thanks. You may want to check out what places server food late. I dunno how long of a night you're trying to have but keep in mind most joints stop cooking around 11, 12 at the latest.

Which raises an interesting question to all Canadians: does Canada believe in Waffle House or IHOP, are these alowed in a socialist country? If not, what good chains of 24 hour eaterys can one expect?

if the leaders of this country knew what dissorder thrived within your all night food providers, war woild be the order of the day. Headlines: Peace talks fail between USA and Canada; Lack of fat, greasy, 24 hour drunk tank-restaurants sighted as fault!

greedrex 11.14.2008 06:45 PM

it's true, however the truck stop is generally superior to ihop, classic country on the jukebox is an absolute must

I don't even buy alcohol haven't touched the stuff in over seven years, just free tap water for cup of ice which you don't get with a 5 dollar bottle, and I still leave tips for the bartender, its just necessary. that is for gigs, for bar-hopping nights you'll probably just find me outside with all the cigarette smokers smoking some weed. I often wonder how I even end up at bars to begin with, because I rarely chill inside of them when I get there.

My point, exactly. Of course, sometimes being drunk before you go to the bar won't mean you're not going to "unintentionally" spend more money!

Absolutely agreed. Although,(and I'm not including myself or friends in this group, just a generalized statement about people in my local bar scene.) drunk hipsters and tired rednecks usually dont mix.

phoenix 11.15.2008 07:43 PM

god i wish we still had dennys here :(
Ddd 2.50 for a g and t that is amazing! I'd be there in a second.
