what do you eat?

i ask because my diet is atrociously simplistic and bad and its hard to change because i eat so LITTLE variety of food i cant actually imagine other foods to eat regularily. even when im in tesco i cant help but by the same old shit.

at this point its obvious my diet is so poor and my health is suffering.

but i REALLY cant be fucked with the whole modern plethora of confusing patronising health advice bullshit or reading endless contradictory health bullshit.

so what food doyou actually eat? like everyday or in a week? what foods good for a guy living alone to make quickly and easily? and most importantly and embarrassingly of all, what food is good for the bowels?

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:22 PM

Good for the bowels is the easiest one: lots and lots of fruit.

Ignore all the diet and health advice and try to eat a balanced diet.

Write a long list of all the food you like and, picking meals from that list, write a week's meal plan before you go shopping.

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:26 PM

This week's meal plan in Pookie Towers:

Sunday: Lamb roast
Monday: Pasta with home made tomato sauce, tuna and chickpeas
Tuesday: Chicken casserole
Wednesday: Home made fish cakes
Thursday: Bangers & mash with onion gravy
Friday: Chilli
Saturday: Pookie's famous meat & potato pie

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:28 PM

For lunch try making your own soup (leak & potato, lentil & carrot, vegetable, chicken - all very easily home made). A good way of getting lots of veggies into you and helping your bowels.

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:30 PM

For puddings I made apple crumble one day and plum cake another. Every other day we just had fruit for pudding.

i eat everything.

breakfast is fruit & yogurt & maybe an egg or a slice of fried tofu & a slice of whole grain toast. weekends is out for pancakes or bloody marys and brunch.

lunch varies, often a huge salad bought @ the co-op.

dinner-- some kinda protein, some kinda grain, fruit, dessert, wine, cocktails, depends on the day.
----

for "the bowels"?

eat your veggies man!! fiber! what the fuck? it's not hard. also, whole grain.

for a guy living alone to make quickly and easy i recommend the spanish tortilla, or the frittata, same shit different name, basically a bunch of whatever you want embedded in eggs. great to eat cold, as a sandwich. you can make it with potato, onions, sausages, sardines, spinach, wilted lettuce, i mean, really, whatever the fuck you like to put in it.

also, you might wanna buy yourself a rice cooker. easiest way to make rice. just pop it in & blam. again for "the bowels" try brown rice instead of white.

oh and bowels, DRINK WATER.

wait, you're irish,r ight? you got this stuff?

nothing better for "the bowels" than oatmeal.

now i dont mean to make you paranoid but if you have bowel "issues" theres a high % of irish people who cant eat fucken gluten. gluten is the protein in bread & wheat & oats & other grain products. so check it out mang:

GrungeMonkey 09.16.2008 05:34 PM

toast is all you need

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:35 PM

And all the things on my weekly meal plan can be made as a single portion for one person, or make a batch and freeze what you don't use. Then you've got a ready made meal for another day.

greedrex 09.16.2008 05:39 PM

My wife cooks me good meals everyday.
i'm a happy bunny.

i'm still a fat cunt though.
doh.

EMMAh 09.16.2008 05:41 PM

I eats lots of eggs.

Scrambled eggs with vegetables, sunny side up, egg sandwiches with tomato, cheese and Franks...

pasta of all sorts.

soup

soy veggie products

I dunno what else?

chilly haha.

!@#$%! 09.16.2008 05:43 PM

another good meal for single dude is CHILI CON CARNE

easiest way is to fry up some onions then add some chili powder, spices, crushed tomato then add canned beans (i like black beans) then some browned meat that you browned separately (can be ground beef or buffalo or chuck steak or whatever you call it in ireland) or meat substitute like tvp, add beer, basil leaf, oregano, cumin, etc- i add dry basil at the end of the cooking.

this is like say a thick spaghetti sauce with beans & meat. you can eat it inside an omelet you can eat it with pasta, with rice, or with bread. the hot peper might not be kind on 'the bowels" but then again chili kills parasites.

i like to eat my chili with greek yogurt but the classic way is with sour cream-- i think greek yogurt is better. other people eat it with cheese but melted cheese + the bowels = not a good mix.

anyway you can cook up a batch & eat the whole week but then you might have farts-- eh, whatever, it's good for you.

ni'k 09.16.2008 05:45 PM

whoa you guys rock!

cheers. the gluten thing sounds possible, ill stay off it for a while and see.

and yeah, ill get some oatmeal

EMMAh 09.16.2008 05:45 PM

Is that how you spell chilly? Chili? Derrrrr.

ok but oatmeal has gluten.

the gluten-free diet is a tough one mang, i tried for a while for "detox" and what not.

ps- from that website i linked you:
Some foods are naturally free from gluten such as:
  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Potato
  • Soya
  • Fresh meat
  • Fish
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Most dairy products.

yeah girl. chilly means cold. chili is from the mexican word for hot pepper, chile, but with a gringo/texas spelling. but no worries, we all fart the same. well some worse than others. some it's like, nuclear shit.

EMMAh 09.16.2008 05:51 PM

You're so knowledgeable :D

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:53 PM

I would suggest keeping track of how you feel after eating particular types of food. Try staying off or cutting back on certain foods and see how you feel.

Although I'm a bit dubious about food allergies, it's worth cutting back on wheat or dairy products to see if that makes a difference.

If you suffer from constipation, eat lots of fruit (but not too many bananas!) but avoid eating too many eggs.

Pookie 09.16.2008 05:53 PM

And fish of course. Particularly oily fish.

atari 2600 09.16.2008 07:06 PM

!@#$%!'s diet sounds like mine...

today was a little lowfat yogurt with a peach (from the farmer's market) for breakfast...if the yogurt runs out (i buy two big things of it at a time) i'll have an egg and/or toast or oatmeal...about once every couple of weeks i'll get some cuban toasted bread w/butter and jam or a ham, egg and cheese biscuit from a locally-owned cuban coffee shop ...had the same box of pancake mix, syrup whatever for over half a year now...how long do eggs keep? I know it's awhile and I should just google...anyway threw out almost a dozen from an 18-box today b/c bought another dozen last time at the store

usually a salad from a independently-owned salad bar for lunch - iceberg, romaine, spinach, shredded carrot, banana pepper, tomato wedges, chopped cucumber, some kind of weird glazed asian tiny crackers i don't know the name of but they are excellent, small serving of pasta salad with fat free sesame and feta dressing/balsamic/or caesar// glad they don't have pepperoni slices at that bar, sometimes they put chicken out...a roast beef or turkey sand from home (when i keep it around i tend to eat too much of it though) or pizza slice from an indie-za store once a week or cuban sandwich (yum) w/chips and salsa from the same cuban coffee shop/diner

I have a pint of red stripe and pint of beck's (well, pint+) in the freezer for dinner which i'll have with some triscuits, red rooster and a little cheese. some nights have shrimp and rice or a bit of rotisserie chicken and rice w/mushrooms and broccoli...
(only drinking once or twice a week these days -- a regular 750 ml bottle of Aussie Shiraz lasted over a week recently). my absolute teetotaling sobriety lasted a couple of months, now i'm just moderating heavily...don't enjoy anything other than a light intoxication anymore --going out once every two weeks or so...

water, green tea, coffee (about 95% decaf and a splash of some 50 blend), white tea with cranberry, V8 fusion or splash, grape or grapefruit juice are my drinks

terriblecanyons 09.16.2008 07:08 PM

My diet consists of boxed macaroni and cheese, capri sun, kool aid, mashed potatoes, and well that's about it.
Obviously I haven't quite grown up yet.

jon boy 09.16.2008 07:27 PM

i tend to get addicted to certain things and then eat so much of it that i never want it again. at the moment its noodles and noodle soup (actually thats a bit of a relapse) and they arnt the healthiest thing in the world so i mkae sure i get my fruit and veg as well.

atari 2600 09.16.2008 07:27 PM

just opened the chilled red stripe...time to pick a cd out...

all this soup talk makes me want to get some split peas and make a big pot. been saving that dish for winter i guess.

the other day when it was raining i went into a soup restaurant (yes, locally-owned too) and had the corn chowder with fresh bread.

I left the store with a healthy amount of it on my leg.

good times.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.16.2008 11:25 PM

absolutely EAT FIVE OR SIX PIECES OF WHOLE, FRESH FRUIT, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

absolutely DRINK 2 liters of water every single day.

if you do this, you will live in the best of health.
