Let's talk about SYR5 again.
It is by far the SYR volume that has been the most challenging for me to get into. But slowly I'm starting to appreciate it. I bought it the week it came out, listened once, and then not again until about 2 months ago.
My first (or rather 2nd) impression of it was that it was rather unlistenable. But slowly bits and pieces started sounding good to me. "What Do You Want (Kim)" I think is the real standout piece. And the screams still sort of make me jump. I can't say I'm all the way there yet. Certainly not like say SYR1, 2, or 7. But I'm getting there. Thoughts? |
I really really like it, I dunno which track it is out of my memory, but one of them is beautiful
|
It's pretty much the most unaccesible SYR. But it's really good in my opinion - can't really say why though strangely... i don't know. I think the best piece on there is "We Are The Princesses", that one gives me the chills. The oscillators in the background are beautiful, and Kim's voice sounds out of breath.
Very good album indeed |
^^yes exactly thats the track Ive ment, I looked for it right now too :)
|
I don't like this SYR, except International Spy. It's hard to listen this album, very experimental, maybe too much as SYR3.
We Are The Princesses have nice electronics, that's correct. |
I think 3 was the weakest of the first trilogy. Yes.
|
By the way, I've interested very much in Burdocks track from SYR4, ciello and this discharge's with some kind of jerk's, yeah! What you think of it?
|
SYR5 is what I imagine Phantom Orchard w/ Kim will sound like, haha. Nah, I'm kidding, there's no way it could sound like that. The lyrics on this thing are terrible.
It is probably the worst SYR, which is sad since it came after one of the best Sonic Youth albums period (SYR4). |
This is the first SYR I liked. It's pretty different from everything, but still enjoyable according to me.

um. okay.
|
i lack words to explain my total disagreement with what you say...
To each his own i guess, but hey... |
SYR4 rules. The best SYR and one of my favorite SY albums, up there with confusion is sex, made in usa, silver sessions, and sister.
|
You made me unearth the BEAST.
Listening to CD2 right now. Check out the new dedicated thread. No offence Adam, you know i like yr style. Ha! |
hahaha.
I try. :) |
Easily my least favorite.
|
I really like it but it took me forever to get into it. I think it's actually brilliant now that I 'get' it; it has a surprising depth. It's great that not every SYR is the usual experimental guitar assault.
|
Which is why I think SYR9 should be acoustic.
|
uh what is SYR 9 SUPPOSED TO BE again?
|
dnt know. The closest I can think of of anything being confirmed is that Steve or Lee had confirmed that a sndtrks boxset was in the works. I guess that COULD be SYR9. And if that happened, I'd be very, very happy.
|
is the song "neu adult" referring to the band "neu" or what??
|
NYC Ghosts & Flowers = Side A
("Lightning") SYR5 = Side B it was released like this, and I bought them both when they were released but didn't make sense to me for like 9 years. |
my favorite is six, Five is something to appreciate. The SYR series are music for specific situations and sonic experiences for certain occasions.. the same thing with something like Thurston's playing with White Out or Lee gigs like the Four Guitars album.
|
I think yr the first person I can think of to say 6 is his fav. I'd rank em:
1 2 8 7 5 3 6 4 |
..........although a part of me feels very strongly that SYR8 is slowly creeping it's way towards the top of the list.
|
I wanted to write exactly the same as the guy from the second post. must be a magical connection to him...

same here |
I had a similar experience. When I first listened to it so many years ago it was so grating. It was really really hard to listen to, it was the only SY recording that actually gave me a headache.
Listened to it again a couple of months ago and it sounded pretty cool and normal. I always liked Olive's Horn though. I love the ending of that one. |
I listened to it twice... it was a struggle both times.
|
yeah, it'll take more than twice. :)
|
I only have 8 and 7. I really need to pick up more.
|
nowadays I think SYR5 is actually pretty great. But like I said earlier, it makes a lot more sense as a continuation of NYCG&F in my head.
HOnestly the only SYR I have trouble really enjoying to this day is 4. I wish I liked it more, but I just find a lot of it unlistenable. There's parts I like. And I love the concept. But as music, I don't enjoy it all that much. |
I think SYR5 is like all the other solo works I´ve heard from SY, great, but not as great as the SY albums. There are very great moments (for example Yuka Honda´s wild drums in Take Me back and that melodic line somewhere in the middle of Fried Mushrooms) but the entity is maybe a little hard to listen. But it is quite enjoyable to listen sometimes.
Somebodies said something about SYR3, I think it is as great as SYR1,2 and 7. |
It is defenitly a hard album to enjoy unless you're in a avant-garde mood, I love it but I am rarely in the mood for it. ;)
|
I fucking love this album.
Some of Kim's most classic work. "International Spy" is probably my favorite track. God I wish I still had my hard copy of this. |
"Paperbag / Orange Laptop" too.
How is this one harder to digest than 3? |
