I dont wanna sound like yr grandpa or something... but I dont' even really know what lastfm is/does.

mil_pl 08.20.2008 07:50 AM

here ya go:

Last.fm is a UK-based Internet radio and music community website, founded in 2002. It claims over 21 million active users based in more than 200 countries.[1] On 30 May 2007, CBS Interactive acquired Last.fm for £140m ($280m USD).[2]

Using a music recommendation system called "Audioscrobbler", Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations or on the user's computer or some portable music devices. This information is transferred to Last.fm's database ("scrobbled") via a plugin installed into the user's music player. The profile data is then displayed on the user's profile page. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user's favourites.

Users can create custom radio stations and playlists from any of the audio tracks in Last.fm's music library, and are able to listen to some individual tracks on demand, or download tracks if the rights holder has previously authorised it. Registration is required to acquire a profile but is not necessary to view any part of the site or to listen to radio stations.

SonicBebs 08.20.2008 09:52 AM

i used to use it quite often. You can ask to listen to bands similiar to Sonic Youth (you get stuff like Velvets, and Yo LA Tengo) or bands similair to Girls Aloud (you get stuff like Sugarbabes)

its pretty good for that

SYRFox 08.20.2008 10:01 AM

Last.FM RULES. I discovered tons of bands with it.

SYRFox 08.20.2008 10:02 AM

Btw I just joined the group. It better has the best charts ever!

noisereductions 08.20.2008 10:18 AM

I never really saw the point until I read this.

I thought it was just that list that has the last ten or so songs you've listened to haha

This Is Not Here 08.20.2008 10:35 PM

I've never understood the thinking behind Last fm. and Pandora (is that still going?!). I'm often told its good to find out bands which are similar to bands you already like, but... who wants to do that? Call me fickle, but I don't want to hear a band that does what Sonic Youth does but not as well, or for that matter a band that does it better, because quite frankly, thats silly talk.

EMMAh 08.20.2008 10:58 PM

I was under the impression that it recommends bands that other fans of whatever band like?

...um, everybody?

If you like good music, it'll reccomend more good music. An endless supply of good music. And that's good.

This Is Not Here 08.20.2008 11:03 PM

Well good is subjective, and these websites don't organise bands by how 'good' they are, do they? I like to hear a sound that I havn't before, don't really understand why people are content with the same old same old.

atsonicpark 08.20.2008 11:11 PM

No, it's not rated by how good the bands are, it's listed by how many fans of a certain band likes another certain band and then it groups them according to tags that people give to the music (which is usually genres but can be other tags like "Weird" or "minimalist fingerpicking drone" or something) and such.

You want to hear something "new" but you won't bother checking out music on last.fm because you're afraid that, since they're listed as a similiar artist, they're going to sound TOO similiar to what you like? Trust me, this won't happen. Look through Sun City Girls's similiar artists.. John Fahey, Jandek, The Tower Recordings, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Boredoms, etc. While there are a few stylistic similarities between some of those musicians, it's still pretty eclectic. They're really not similiar moreso as they're just artists that a person who likes SCG might like.

As someone who definitely doesn't bother listening to the same old same old, I reccomend last.fm 110%. There's such a wealth of knowledge and discovery there, it's ridiculous. If you just want to look at all the highest-rated "avant trombone" albums, there's probably a page for that. There are groups on everything one would ever be interested in. Also, all the users are friendly and on a few pages like the Ry Cooder and AMM pages, I've asked for some help with reccomendations and I've IMMEDIATELY gotten reccomendations from people. Very helpful, friendly, a good atmosphere, filled with intelligent/open minded people (that's more than I can say for a lot of the people who populate this board), and I gurantee within a few weeks you will have discovered 50 not-so-same-old-same-old bands if you bother to look.

atsonicpark 08.20.2008 11:18 PM

That being said, I don't scrobble much because I listen to actual cd's/records on actual cd/record players usually. I don't really like listening on computer speakers most of the time.

I just mainly use it to browse bands' message boards (I mean, they have every band from Mong Hang to Eddie Edwards to Silmaosoto to Xerobot to ... god, it's fucking endless!).. it's fun to talk to people about bands. Also, I find a lot of good music on there, though it hasn't replaced my tried-and-true method of "Randomly downloading albums off of a guy who's downloading off of you on soulseek". It's just a good site. The groups are really fun!!

This Is Not Here 08.20.2008 11:26 PM

I dunno, its just something I've never really been particularly drawn to, I realise there are stylistic similarities but bands are essentially different, and my initial comment was something of a tounge-in-cheek jab at people's justification for last fm.; I do 'get' why people use it and why its helpful. However I think it might be a little too easy to get stuck in a rut if websites are a sole source of musical research, I enjoy getting thrown off the rails now and then and discovering something totally new, and the best way to do that is sharing music amongst flesh-made freinds. A few years ago in my b-boy phase I used to use allmusic.com (yes, laughable isn't it) and it's similar artists function, it'd either give me something with no resemblance to the artist or TOO similar. Since then I only really use websites, particularly allmusic for cold hard facts about albums, release dates, labels etc. My real source of discovering new stuff online is right here on Sonic Gossip, when I can talk more directly about music. When my 'to buy' list becomes empty maybe I will turn to last fm for the next step, however right now its one long list.

atsonicpark 08.20.2008 11:27 PM

Well-said, my friend.

Death & the Maiden 08.21.2008 05:23 AM

I might create an account soon. Is it compatible with iPods?

mil_pl 08.21.2008 07:33 AM

yep .

viewtiful_alan 08.21.2008 04:04 PM

How does it work with ipods?

mil_pl 08.21.2008 07:14 PM

I dont know you must check it out, i just know that it works somehow:p

SYRFox 08.21.2008 07:32 PM

I use iSproggler to scrobble my iPod.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 08.21.2008 08:24 PM

I just joined the group.

With Ipods you download a program that goes on the ipod that keeps track of song plays by date/time. I 'm not sure but I think when you plug into the computer it copies the data to your profile.

Everyneurotic 08.21.2008 10:29 PM

i'm not joining your group.
