Haven't read this for years, and I gotta say
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/articl...ghosts-flowers ...whether I agree with it or not (obviously I don't), it's one of the worst reviews I've ever read. Usually when you give an album a bad rating like that, you explain why. The only thing I got is "it's too New York." |
He seems to avoid saying how exactly it's as bad as he says.
The review reads more like the album is a 5.0 or whatever. |
In all honesty and serious, and I've said this elsewhere, "Free City Rhymes" and the title track are two of the all time best SY songs. It's actually kinda shocking how perfect those two songs are.
The whole album's amazing though, certainly their best album in the 2000's and compared to their 90's output only eclipsed by Thousand Leaves in my opinion. |
It's my favourite of their 2000's input also.
Some you guys should say something nice about the album and I can edit it into the group overview |
NYC Ghosts & Flowers is actually my second favorite SY album, just behind Bad Moon Rising, and the title track is my favorite SY track. I could see how people don't like it though, but yeah, that pitchfork review really sucks
|
And link Mesh Gear Fox :D:D:D
|
Something about the pitchfork review, that guy really hates Bruce Willis.
Also, this is pretty funny: And this being democratic badness, Lee Ranaldo speaks hilarious William S. Burroughs impersonations on the title track. "Hey did any of you freaks here ever remember Lenny," he asks as if wearing a trenchcoat in a opium den. Out of 500 retarded sentences in the review, there has to be one funnny part eh? |
I've just joined. This was my first SY album and I still love it, I've even been listening to it quite a bit lately.
|
5 members alrightttt
we need to get to 10 at least |
That line is awkward though, Adam.

yes! and Nevermind too! I cant explain how good those songs are |
I definitely have to echo what atsonicpark said about Free City Rhymes and the title track. Nevermind is good too, until it gets to the "GRRLZ GO TO MARZ" part.
The only song on it that I really dislike is Renegade Princess. |
I dont dislike a single song on there. Since the day it came out I thought it was a rather brilliant album with a definite feel and perfect sequencing (the CD version).
|
NYC G+F is one of three SY albums I still don't have.

What line is awkward?
"as if wearing a trenchcoat in a opium den." That's hilarious. |
holy shit, just now listening to the title track
guess that is a sign, if any, to join |
i love this album very much...cause S.Y had the good taste to include "the spacestatic guitar" of Rafael Toral in renegade princess (and it sounds beautiful), the homage to the great poet W.S. Burroughs, and the noisy melodys of the songs ( "a romantic contrast betwen near silence and the absolute chaos")

I'm ordering this on Amazon tonight (along with Murray Street, Sonic Nurse and Trees...), in order to finally complete my collection of "major" Youth releases. Will take the total owned up to 31, which I know isn't as high as some peoples, but still makes them the most dominant force in my collection by some margin. So you may well have a new member in a couple of weeks ;)

I've been collecting for 10 years. Others here even longer. But don't worry. You'll catch up. The fun of collection SY is that there's always SOMETHING else you want/need to have! |
It's more than music
Whatever it is, it's in black and white |

That said, not only does he fail to defend his score, but he actually makes it sound quite a bit better than a 0. I really hope he got fired. Even Pitchfork must see throught the snobbery of that "review". He conveyed absolutely nothing worthwhile with the review, and his opinion is in severe conflict with most people interested in this kind of music. You can't do much worse than that. |
They gave the brilliant Pullhair Rubeye a 0, didn't they?
And Zareeka? |
I remember P4K took off that Zaireeka review for a while, probably due to embarrassment. That review was just the worst. The only word the guy ever used to describe the actual album is "interesting" and spent the rest of the review bitching about having to play it on four separate discs.
|
and then admitted that he never even listened to it through 4 CD players.
|
been listening to this loads since this thread
i used to really dislike NYCGAF when i first got it (except 3 tracks, free city rhymes, nevermind and NYCGAF) but now i can see its beauty. everytrack is gorgeous! love it Thats what i love about SY. It took me a while to get all of 1000leaves but when you do you're smaked in the face hit by a car in love |
maybe we will create sonic board group on lastfm ? what you think ?
|

I'd probably join, only made one post though. Joined the NYCGAF as sonicyouth69. |
yeah make a sonic board group
|
I always thought that review was supposed to be a joke? Like a Chicago Vs. New York thing.
I'll join the group...the only thing I hate about that album is Kim's line in Nevermind...you know the one. |

hey, how are scrobbling syr8 ? i mean sonic youth with mats gustafsson & merzbow /or sonic youth med mats gustafsson og merzbow?
|
It's probably just scrobbled as sonic youth since it's an syr release... but the album title would have the others names in the title.
|
Most SY collabs I've listened to always come up as Sonic Youth.
