Cosa Nostra

So, a lot of us like Mafia books & movies.

What are your favorite books & movies about the Mafia? Do a top ten list or whatever you feel like, if you feel like doing it; after all, no one has a gun to your head.

Ha ha ha.
I'm from Italy(home of 'our thing' you tiny things).
The mafia, apparently, started out as a mean to fight all things percieved as state run and the blah blah blah.It went on to spread its ever erratic tentacles(hence the 'La piovra 'tag) to well(hmmm...) adjusted countries making sure that a distorted image of Italy was spread all over the continents. Then came Porkmarras,The Sopranos and things got worse and worse.Literature?Phweee!

Godfather Trilogy, Casino, Scarface, Donnie Brasco, Heat (we'll call it that). I've had The Last Mafioso for years, but I haven't read it yet.

atari 2600 05.29.2006 07:34 PM

favorite non-fiction: Lucky Luciano: The Man that Organized Crime in America by Hickman Powell.

favorite fiction: The Godfather by Mario Puzo (of course)

johnnywinternoshow 05.29.2006 08:11 PM

i like the french ice cream guy

LifeDistortion 05.29.2006 08:17 PM

Also in "The Simpsons" Joe Mantanga does the voice of Fat Tony, the head mafia guy, and they are always making fun of "The Godfather 3" on that show, and "Godfather 3" was the only movie in the series he was actually in.

atari 2600 05.29.2006 08:18 PM

"Bart the Murderer" used to be my hands-down favorite episode of The Simpsons.

It was the episode that introduced William "Fat Tony" Williams (Yeah, Joe Mantegna).

johnnywinternoshow 05.29.2006 08:24 PM

i love the one with the pretzels and the japanese guy in the white suit, "but mom, that guy in the white suit hasn't moved yet, i know he's gonna do something awesome"

Fat Tony : I'm afraid I must insist. You see, my wife, she has been most vocal on the subject of the pretzel monies. "Where's the money? "When are you going to get the money?" "Why aren't you getting the money now?" And so on

johnnywinternoshow 05.29.2006 08:28 PM

joey tight lips is the best mafia character in the simpsons

"joey tight lips did you see which way he went?"

"I ain't sayin nothin'"

The robot mafia in Futurama are even better
Robot: "Donbot, I beg you. I can't make this week's loan payment. Look into your hard drive and open your mercy file!"
Donbot: "File not found!"

Donbot: "Joey, Clamps, hurry up and blindfold 'em before they see us some more."

fuckin' a that was the best. I think I have to go watch that episode now. when Homer tells Fat Tony, "you mean the mob did a favor for me just for me to do a favor for them in return?...for shame...good day...I said good day, sir"

...oh lord.

& johnny tight lips...i ain't sayin' nothin'
(in another) whoa! who said i had a mudda?

priceless!

I hope The Simpsons movie is good. I wonder if I'll cry when it goes off the air even though there are so many great episodes anyway & it isn't what it used to be. I still love the show, though.

atari 2600 05.30.2006 10:51 PM

I enjoyed WiseGirls (2002).

Tokolosh 05.31.2006 03:06 AM

At the moment I'm reading The Westies.
Inside New York's irish mob (60's - 80's). By T. J. English
The story of Jimmy Coonan and Mickey Featherstone.
The Irish mob were not as organised as the Cosa Nostra but just as
ruthless.

As for films:
Gangs of New York
Good Fellas
Godfather trilogy
Casino
La Piovra (TV serie)
Scarface
Donnie Brasco... etc

pao-lino 05.31.2006 05:20 AM

haha la piovra.
I remember I watched it with my parents when I was a child...
now there are the re-runs at night on RAIDUE

porkmarras 05.31.2006 05:30 AM

Rai 3

It's called Octopus in english and you can buy the 3x DVD box set.

I use to watch it with my grandparents in the mid 80's.
They were Italian and got the whole serie sent over on VHS from relatives back home in the "old country".

Do you remember the scene where they do the Sicilian necktie job on one of the capos.
Explicitly brutal torture sequence.

You're Welcome.

Disgruntled Youth 05.31.2006 10:54 AM

Yeah Mafia shit is hot. I like the deleted scenes from The Godfather as well.
I also like British Gangster films as well Snatch, Lock Stocked & 2 Smoking Barrels, Gangster Number 1 & Layer Cake. I'd like to see films on Japanese mafia (the Yakuza).

Richie's films are great!
The Kray brothers were 2 of the most notorious gangsters in London in the 60's.
The film was pretty bad. The Kray's were played by the Kemp brothers from Spandau Ballet?!... remember?
The book is great though.

atari 2600 06.02.2006 11:19 AM

mob comedies worth seeing

Midnight Run (not just a comedy, but Dennis Farina is so great in it as is of course De Niro & it's the best role Charles Grodin ever played...it's one of my favorite movies & the only drawback is some of the music)
Broadway Danny Rose
Mad Dog and Glory (Murray/De Niro/Thurman)
The Freshman (Brando parodying his role as Don Vito=priceless cinema)
Some Like It Hot (the AFI ranks this as the #1 comedy of all-time...now that's a laugh)
Johnny Dangerously
Bullets Over Broadway
Prizzi's Honor
Family Business
Crimewave
Analyze This (skip Analyze That)
Suicide Kings
8 Heads in a Duffel Bag
Wise Guys
Married to the Mob
The Whole Nine Yards (skip The Whole Ten Yards)

note that Miller's Crossing is officially deemed a crime thriller & is a very black comedy at best; also noteworthy is that Crimes & Misdemeanors, which isn't wholly a comedy, is based around a mafia/gangland hit; if either one of these movies were included they would top the list. Am I leaving some out? Please add any contributions.

Tokolosh 06.02.2006 03:44 PM

Nice list Atari!
Speeking of mob comedies, what about Bugsy Malone (1976) by Alan Parker.
Great roles by Jodie Foster and Scott Baio.
I love the cake splatters and pedal transport.

Millers crossing is a pretty good film. Forgot that one.

one of the best

thewall91 06.02.2006 04:55 PM

working in the federal court i get the real nonfiction. i've done bail hearings for capos in the gambino family and i did a three-month trial of the rudaj organization, the albanians who actually kicked one of the italian families out of queens. i just did a pretrial conference last week of john gotti jr. never gotten an italian family trial yet though.

Neongod 06.02.2006 10:16 PM

Pulled from a website...we all know this scene...

These scenes are interspersed with scenes of Michael's men preparing to murder the heads of the New York crime families. As the music reaches a climax , the priest turns and asks:
Priest: "Michael Francis Rizzi (the baby) do you renounce Satan?"
Michael Corleone (the godfather): "I do renounce him."
Priest: "And all his works?"
Michael: "I do renounce them."
Priest: "And all his pomps?"
Michael: "I do renounce."
Priest: "Michael Francis Rizzi, will you be baptized?"
Michael: "I will."
Priest: "In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit go in peace, and may the Lord be with you."

Fucking awesome...

RdTv 06.02.2006 10:41 PM

Casino
Godfather II
Goodfellas
Soprano's
Scarface
and some more

krastian 06.02.2006 11:29 PM

I don't think it's wise to advertise that. For your sake.
