Rodan
So here's a band that I would expect to see mentioned more often on here but rarely do (unless I am missing out?). Better than Slint, in my opinion.
Yeah, a very fine band indeed. Not better than Slint if you ask me, but certainly similar in alot of ways (not to mention minimal recorded output). Rusty is a real forgotten masterpeice, I love how it starts off with meanadering mellow chiming guitar which sounds like it came off a Mogwai album, and then suddenly breaks into a thunderous post-hardcore affair for akin to bands like Crain. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. This has made me want to give it a listen today, thanks!
i vote for "different than slint" but yeah, definitely ace band. haven't listened to them in quite a while.
i really like tara jane o'neil's post rodan work, more than i like rodan.
I think you are missing out, they've been mentioned quite a bit (mainly by me, but hey!)... haha... but yeah, I agree, way better than Slint. I definitely see the similarities (very quiet verses that erupt into loud parts, weird awkward dynamic shifts and time signature changes, Kentucky, occassional odd bouts of guitar playing, constant use of harmonics)... but Rodan are way, uh, "harder" in parts. And better.
There's a 10+ minute song on their only album that is breathtaking. Also love the romantic, quiet opening of that album. Just beautiful. Great band. I'm gonna do a classic albums post on them eventually. |
I prefer them more than Slint too.
has anyone heard their 7", EP, or demos?
i have rusty which is a great album, havent listened to it in a while though, but the opening track is beautiful

If I remember correctly, Rodan is one fucking useless monster.
I have a 7'' single of theirs which I had bought for someone else but decided to keep it. Need to check which one.
they also had an awesome track on a Simple Machines compilation way back in the mid 90's... Rusty is a great album, learned about them thru Thurston's record reviews in the old Sonik Death fanzines back in the day... Rodan splintered into a few things afterward one of which is June of '44...
new trend! slint out! rodan in!
not in my opinion though |

So why do you seem so worried about the fact that not everyone prefers slint to rodan, then? |

slint are slint
rodan are rodan.. different band so stop comparing rusty is an incredible piece of work. dont have anything else by em unfortunatly but its one of my favourite releases ever.... and so is spiderland! |

godamn, you really are one of the pickiest dudes ive ever come across on a message board, no offense, its actually pretty funny.
I read once that Rodan had a peel session at some point that had some new songs on it... anyone know anything about this?

Apparently so - according to the bible on such matters: Rodan Recorded 3/6/94, broadcast 23/7/94 Sangre, Big Things Small Things, Before The Train |
Ohhh nice!

Yes, it exists-my friend downloaded it and sent the link to me but i can't find it now. well, yeah, rodan is a great band - much like slint, but very different. their melodies are kind of similar but the mood is just way different than slint, in my opinion. tara jane o'neil rules on that album. |
working on uploading the peel sessions now...about an hour to go.

But no other math rock/post rock album can be better than Spiderland. |
RIGHT.. ENOUGH ALREADY..
how can you compare something which you havent heard yet???? why is there a fascination about comparing 2 totally different bands to each other... slint and rodan are both exceptional bands but toally different. ok they might both be post whatever but they are totally different.. rusty is an incredible album as so is spiderland.. both well in my top 10 albums of all time ever but for christ sake stop the comparisons.. why bother??? and if you havent heard rodan, go and do yourself a favour and listen to it. its readily available anywhere and its a classic....... |
right, I didn't really make this thread for you twats to go overboard comparing the two or giving shit to each other for comparing them
Rodan. |
twat???? .......................
I was actually agreeing with you that we should shut up about comparing them.
Is there something broken with you? |
ok, man sorry.. i got the short end of the completely wrong stick..... consider last post edited and i apologise.....
the peel sessions are REALLy good
better upload that shit :)
