Q.What does a working player do when they need money, perhaps because large amounts of royalties have been unpaid, perhaps because their company has a large loan to be redeemed, perhaps because a new roof is needed on their home?
A.They sell their instruments!
:(

Cantankerous 06.25.2008 10:26 PM

When I met him, he was only working for Fripp part-time, so maybe he was cutting back even then:( .

I would have thought Toyah could just do a bit more TV work to bring a bit of dosh in.

Or a book. Would anybody buy her autobiography?

atsonicpark 06.26.2008 11:48 AM

I heard somewhere he teaches guitar in college classes or something.

Rob Instigator 06.26.2008 11:54 AM

Prog does not pay!

fuck it!

Cantankerous 06.26.2008 12:04 PM

progressive rock, next to post-rock, is the stupidest name for a genre ever. yes, pink floyd, king crimson, genesis, etc are all wildly different from each other.

atsonicpark 06.26.2008 12:05 PM

Why do you care about what a genre is called? I've never understood why people get bent out of shape over a name of a genre.

"Progressive rock" makes perfect sense; rock n roll music that is doing something drastically different than, you know, "rock n roll music" -- but still played in a rock context.

I agree.

I've tried to eschew genres and just talk about actual artists.

Guitar Craft.
The diary entry mentions the last time he had to do this, due to EG management in the 90s being fuckedup, was on a RF & The League of Crafty Guitarists tour - LCG being Guitar Craft students Fripp puts together for performance and touring. So I guess Guitar Craft isn't the most profitable venture he could be in.

I was talking with Adrian Belew recently at his 'warmup' gig for his power trio 'mini-tour' underway and he said that as of yet, King Crimson WAS NOT going to do ANY new material for their 'micro' tour coming up.

Fripp and Belew are to be joined by Tony Levin, Pat Mastelloto and Gavin Harrison (drummer, Porcupine Tree) for their warmup gigs here in Nashville in early August. This town is actually kind of homey. Here's my ticket. Notice the price....LOL, no where near the higher prices of NY and Chicago. KC always rehearse here in town and I thought Adrian was gonna invite me to the pre-warmup practice. :( I should have invited myself.

Everyneurotic 06.26.2008 06:25 PM

technically, the term "progressive" rock is derived from the music being composed on many chord progressions instead of one or two like most rock music.

Lurker 06.26.2008 06:31 PM

There once was a musician named Fripp,
Who in his pocket made a terrible rip.
It wasn't so funny
He lost all of his money.
Due to the overdose he's now on a drip.

Pookie 06.26.2008 06:35 PM

I bet you already regret posting that.

Lurker 06.26.2008 06:36 PM

Why?

Lurker 06.26.2008 06:36 PM

Did Robert Fripp actually overdose?

Lurker 06.26.2008 06:37 PM

Should I change the last line?

Lurker 06.26.2008 06:37 PM

Maybe something about not getting a grip.

atsonicpark 06.27.2008 09:12 AM

Fripp even invented the "new standard tuning"[copyright symbol]!

Maybe he gets taxed heavily for that?

Fuck, you guys are lucky. Tickets are going for at least sixty bucks up here. I'm doubtful that I'll see them this summer since my concert fund is already drained as is. :7(

In 2000 when the Y2K 'warmup' gigs were here in town, KC did 4 shows at a small local venue. Tix were only $20 and I went to each of the shows.

They're cool because they all cut up...even Fripp can be a jokester at these 'dress rehearsals'. In 2000, as they begun Fractured, Trey Gunn screwed up, so they started again...and Fripp was so animated. I'd never seen him so amiable. LOL

Fripp was clandestinely present at Adrian's recent power trio gig here, unnoticed except for a few. He likes to go unnoticed at things like that. I'm at a coffeeshop directly across the street from The Belcourt as I type awaiting the Aug. 3rd warmup show.......:p I'll be first in line and get the very best seat in the house ! YES !!!!

did he do anything really radical, like stand up?

Yes. He even became a song and dance man prancing on the stage with microphone in hand. His sister, who was doing merchandising, came onstage and started ribbing him. He hadn't come onstage yet, but at that moment he came out and took the mic from her and started defending himself. She'd started a story about him when he was young. Very funny stuff.

She'd caught him playing 'air guitar' to Rumble by Link Wray. He said it was the distortion that inspired the boogie in him.

atsonicpark 06.29.2008 07:29 AM

haha that last paragraph is genius.
