Spiritualized - Songs in A & E

Ive been waiting for it for years and years, im getting it in the next couple of days and all the reviews seem to be good. So whats we all thinks?

Everyneurotic 06.03.2008 10:29 PM

i think it's very awesome.

by the way, i never complimented you on the hedonism bot youtube link you posted; consider yourself complimented.

StevOK 06.03.2008 10:32 PM

I've been trying to get ahold of a copy, but I'm broke. I guess I'll download it soon.

the ikara cult 06.03.2008 10:33 PM

*how delightful*

A suitable sentiment for Spiritualized i think

SuperCreep 06.03.2008 11:39 PM

It hasn't faired to well with me on repeated listens, sadly.

SonicBebs 06.04.2008 04:00 AM

i'm more scared of this than i was of the rem album. I dont think i could take another shit Spiritualized record

Toilet & Bowels 06.04.2008 04:41 AM

what are the chances of a band who turned shit turning good again?

radarmaker 06.04.2008 06:22 AM

It's good, but not great.

PAULYBEE2656 06.04.2008 06:54 AM

yeah, its a good spiritualized album. better than amazing grace and the other one i cant remember the name of but its no electric mainline or ladies and gentlemen... im not even gonna mention laser guided melodies .....

worth checking out tho.

Phlegmscope 06.04.2008 06:56 AM

It took me a long time to actually get into ladies and gentleman (almost two years or so), but finally I grew to like it a lot.

Spiritualized are supporting none other than Lenny Kravitz this weekend here. it's a huge arena rock show of course, and tickets are only about seven million euros.
If spiritualized did a separate show at a smaller venue (without lenny kravitz) I'd be interested to see them.

Other than music, the most interesting aspect of spiritualized is the emphasis they put on package design.

im not afraid to say this: best album by mr pierce ever.

everything weve seen on previous records; garage, psychedelia, gospel, blues, and more. the flow of the album is perfect, other spiritualized records however good i have found drag on too long, not this one.

DNAINTHEDNA 06.04.2008 02:37 PM

agreed, this album is killer, not sure where all the hate is coming from

king_buzzo 06.04.2008 03:28 PM

i dont have it yet.

sarramkrop 06.06.2008 05:39 AM

I listened to it for the first time yesterday and I really liked it. Some of the songs sound way better than their recent output.

SonicBebs 06.06.2008 06:06 AM

definatly. Listened to half of it last night and was impressed.

whorefrost 06.06.2008 06:20 AM

I saw them on Jools Holland and it was sort of gnarly, halfway thru the song sort of collapsed into shapeshifting improv territory...

batreleaser 06.06.2008 07:19 AM

this record gets better with every listen. im telling you, yhr flow is fucking perfect. 2-6 minute songs that just roll into one another, some beautiful arragements on this record too. pretty much a grand combination of everything good pierce has ever recorded.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 06.06.2008 09:48 AM

Until recently I've only been familiar with Ladies and Gentleman. I just got some of their other stuff and I have to say their other stuff is pretty disappointing. That version of Lord Can You Hear Me When I Call? on Let it Come Down is fucking awful.

I haven't listened to too much of Songs in A&E yet.

SonicBebs 06.06.2008 09:56 AM

i've not heard the origonal Lord Can You Hear Me so i'm gonna dig that out. Quite liked Spiritualized's version.

Toilet & Bowels 06.06.2008 12:00 PM

jason pierce is the most boring lyricist of all time, he has a vocabulary of about 30 or 40 words that he just rearranges into as many combinations as he can think of, and then starts again at the begining

I see what you mean in the sense that 3 of the first 5 or so songs on the new one are called " 'x'...on fire". But ive always felt the lyrics were a secondary concern, i often dont care what the lyrics to a song are if its a good enough song.

I like the album from listening to it a couple of times but ive not really made up my mind, i shelled out an extra £5 (which i cant really afford to do at the min) for the "special edition" and it really wasnt worth it.

ladies and gentlemen
electric mainline
live at albert hall
lazer guided melodies
songs in a & e

everything else...

in that order....

Semperet 06.12.2008 08:32 AM

Saw them live about three weeks ago and musically the band were stronger than the Albert Hall album which I love. Lots of noisy meltdowns, couple of backing singers handling the gospel stuff and Jason with his huge shades, not moving a muscle more than was necessary to play the stuff. Great first twenty mins, quite dull middle and a last 40 mins which envied many gigs I've been to in quite some while. Stunning version of Take Your Time, lovely Think I'm In Love, Come Together, nice Let It Flow.
But they didn't do Cop Shoot Cop. Blues for me.
The new stuff (haven't heard the album) sounded like most of the older stuff but much more focused and tight, especially when compared to Amazing Grace. There were people in the audience crying during Lord Can You Hear Me?
I didn't think it was that bad.
I'll get the album when it's cheaper. What can he do, as Yeats asked, but enumerate old themes?

dazedcola 10.15.2008 04:48 PM

I saw them for the first time on letterman and really enjoyed it. Songs in A and E was my first exposure and i loved it. Its a perfect late night record. wish i knew about it earlier so i could have seen them live.

radarmaker 10.15.2008 05:14 PM

Saw them last week and they were fucking amazing, far better than I was expecting (and I've seen 'em at least 4 or 5 times previously).
As Semperet said above, the last third or so of the set was one of the greatest things I've seen all year. I honestly thought there was no way they could follow up the massive fuck-off finale to Come Together so was all set to leave, only for them to come back on for the most beautiful version of Lord Can You Hear Me I've ever heard. And to think I nearly didn't bother going...

Kallisti23chaos 10.23.2008 08:32 PM

i was way disappointed in a&e, although i saw them this summer and it was good times.
