Bands you regret not having seen
I'm talking bands that it could have been feasible for you to have seen them, but you missed them and now wish you hadn't. So there's no point in saying stuff like "The Beatles" unless you were born in or before the early 1950's.
My biggest one is Soulside. I thought they kicked ass (still do actually), but the one time I had the chance to see them I didn't know about it until the next day. |
nation of ulysses, beat happening, bikini kill, bratmobile (i almost saw them), the make up, television personalities, sonic youth, unwound, jesus and mary chain...... this list can go on forever, but at least i can say that i saw fugazi.
|
there have been ones where i missed them come by but have made up for it down the road, however only one really makes me regret not going
DMBQ with Get Hustle at the Talking Head in Baltimore back in 05, that night after the show Mana "China" Nishiura who also drummed for Shonen Knife at one point, was killed in a crash heading towards NYC, since that time i made the right choice to see Sun City Girls at ATP, and stayed longer then i expected, which was such a smart move cause Charles Gocher died a few months later, so it's hard to pass up things when you look at it in such a mortal way |
Believe it or not, I'm upset I didn't see David Byrne a few years ago. It was just him in this very small venue. I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff (don't dislike it either, tho), but it couldn't have possibly been a waste of time. I don't know what the show was like but I'm sure it was nice.
There's a bunch of stuff I've missed, but for some reason that one really sticks in my craw. |
Sunn0))) and Circle in early 2005, Electric Wizard in early 2006.
At that time I was just getting into those bands. |
Slint, doing Spiderland for ATP. I was going to go with my girlfriend, but then we split up. Shitter (not the splitting up, missing Slint)
|
nirvana is the first one that comes to mind.
|
The Birthday Party
Albert Ayler circa "Spiritual Unity" (the "New Grass" period would've been a laff riot too) Trouble Funk Fela Kuti Napalm Death when it was the Justin Broadrick/Nic Bullen/Mick Harris line-up Swans Sun Ra Arkestra John Coltrane anytime, anyplace, anywhere Earth, Wind and Fire in their very early days (a seriously funky proposition) Loop |
My biggest regret is probably not going to see Sonic Youth on the "Goodbye 20th Century" tour in 2001. They played two nights in a row and I only went to the first night (which was a normal rock show), but not to the SYR4 show the following night. Actually, that's probably the only show I really "regret" not going to, because it was a one-off tour.
Also, just like Pleghmscope I kind of regret not going to see Electric Wizard in early 2006, but I can make up for that this year probably so it's not that big of a deal... Then there were a few overlapping/conflicting shows where -looking back- I think I chose the wrong ones: - Borbetomagus and LSD March (went to another gig instead with Sunn0))), Earth, Espers, Sir Richard Bishop and Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice) - Ashtray Navigations at ATP (watched Nurse With Wound instead). |
biggest is slint. i forgot about the show :( :( :( :(
|
Flipper - back in the day,
Black Flag - Damaged era, probably loads more. |
I wouldn't say regret, but I would have liked to have seen:
Minutemen (I saw fIREHOSE as a second best) The Clash (I saw Joe Strummer...) Black Flag (saw Rollins Band a few times...) Otherwise I've seen just about all of the bands I've wanted to see. |
It used to be the original line up of dinosaur jr but they re-united! yaya!
I missed seeing Morphine, Archers of Loaf, and PJ harvey |
Death from Above 1979 (played in Ottawa, but I wasn't into them yet)
Sonic Youth (in Montreal, couldn't due to my job) Bush Tetras (see above) Dinosaur Jr (see above) Jesu (had a late class that night) Pere Ubu (see above) Silver Mt Zion (this is actually an upcoming show, but I can't go due to work ......again) |
Dinosaur jr. in Knoxville last year.
|
Sonic Youth :(
|
Boredoms, REM just a couple of days ago.
|

|

I got into the Ramones and most other music that I still like now in about March of 1994...the last time they were in Australia was in January 1994, doh!

the live footage i've seen looked amazing |
Well their later output wasn't too great... But I'd imagine mr. yow's charisma would redeem a lot.

They just seemed uninterested, but could have just been having an off day. I didn't get to see Yow's scrotum at least. |
Fugazi. God I wish I could go back in time and see them. Also the Bad Brains. Those early shows looked so incredible.

Pixies
(Maybe if there's a second reunion tour??) Pavement Guided By Voices Nirvana (May have been slightly possible, but highly unlikely) Weezer (Matt Sharp era) (could have easily seen them in '97 but stupidly chose not to because they were opening for No Doubt) Kyuss At the Drive-in (saw The Mars Volta but they were nowhere near as good) |
shellac
pixies fantomas slayer q.o.t.s.a. nirvana radiohead |
i thought of one, like i said, i don't regret not going to any of the shows i've missed but this one is a weird situation.
brutal truth on the need to control tour, 1995; my then friend wanted to go, i wasn't very familiar with them but i had the earache sampler called earplugged and they were the standouts for me so i was in favour of going. we actually saw morbid angel at that same venue (a small time wrestling arena in the industrial part of town) a few months back and...i can't remember why we didn't go, i was into it and he was super pumped. i do remember turning down his offer to see obituary there because i thought obituary sucked hard. brutal truth, i can't remember why i didn't go, but i still have the flyer stuck in my room. |
adding on:
g.g. allin, just to see the face of utter destruction. |
|
Blonde Redhead
Cat Power David Bowie Prince Jethro Tull Drive-by Truckers (missed out on an electric gig of theirs but did eventually get to see them play acoustic) |
Ed Kuepper performing Honey Steel's Gold for the Don't Look Back tour. He performed at the same venue as SY did when when they did Daydream Nation, except it was a few days earlier. I didn't know about it, I wasn't familiar with his music at the time. I only found out about it when looking at my souvenirs from the SY concert.
|
The Unicorns - show was in London, and i couldn't be bothered to go, they broke up like 2 months later.
Islands - had tickets but had to go to a funeral instead. Sparklehorse - was in america when they played here. Sparklehorse (again) - had a ticket but forgot about the show. |
Snakefinger (I just missed seeing him!)
Skeleton Crew (same thing) Einsturzende Neubauten at Myrtle Edwards Park in Seattle (I've seen them since, but really was annoyed I couldn't get a ride from school at Bellingham to this show in '85!) Johnny Thunders (never had a specific chance, but always had hoped to see him and then he died) Lords of the New Church/Dead Boys (same story with Stiv Bators) X (in the Billy Zoom days) Ten Minute Warning (legendary Seattle band, just ahead of my time, they reunited and reportedly sucked, but the tapes of their original sound was like Green River but better and more underground) Chrome (when Helios and Damon were both in the band) Flipper (again, I'm talking original, since I'm the right age to have seen them if it'd have worked out) Beat Nigs (Michael Franti's industrial band before Disposable Heroes of Hipocrissy, I was going to see them but they broke up) Sun Ra (I did see him, but was going to see him again the next year and then he died before the show and it was cancelled) |
