SYR Series
Should I bother with these? I'm really curious as to what they sound like, but from 30 second clips I heard on itunes of SYR1 and SYR4 really don't make me want to listen to them, but that's how I felt when I heard the 30 second clips of BMR but I love that album. Which one should I get 1st if you think i should?
SYR1 is the only one i really enjoy and still listen too. start there.
i was caucious (is that a proper word?) at first but definatly get them. May as well go in chronological order, but SYR3 is my current favourite. And dont write them off after 1 listen, give them a chance!
SYR3 is my favorite as well, followed by SYR6 and SYR4
*high-five for SYR3*
i decided to get SYR1 and work my way through chronologically, can't wait to get to SYR3 to see what all the fuss is about.
If you like Bad Moon Rising, you should like SYR3, it has the same nocturnal atmosphere, though even more experimental.
Anagrama off SYR1 is one of my faourite SY tracks, its genius
I seriously don't understand all the SYR3 love - to me, it's by far the weakest.
But yeah, they're certainly worth investigating. Just don't expect many pop songs ;) |
no way, 5 is the weakest. And by Weakest i mean annoying and shit.
Ah, now i feel bad. I'm gonna have to give 5 another chance. Look at me, giving out advice on a forum and i dont even take myown advice myself. |
buy them in order. syr3 is my least favourite. i love 5 though!
i was incredibly disappointed when SYR3 came out and there were no hints of 'songs'. i grew to really love it after a while and now i think it's a really terrifying set of recordings and a very powerful release. a good way to introduce jim. this was between SYR2 and 'a thousand leaves', release date-wise, so at the time i expected a continuation of SYR2 and its relation to the forthcoming LP.
anyway! 4 is great if you love SY's ultra noise side, some really great, dynamic recordings (SYR3 is equally as dynamic, tons of space and loud and quiet, beautiful stuff). some unlistenable concept stuff (which is cool in its own right), but lots of great SY+friends insanity. |
I'm listening to SYR 6 right now, I did not enough before, it's brilliant...
SYR 1 was a true revelation for me when it came out, and still remains one of my fave...perhaps also because it's in my language ! so I put high hopes on SYR7 's "Agnes B" ! |
syr 3 is in my top top top sy record list.
its sooo good that it makes me cry from beauty why listening ! |
I kinda think they get worse as they proceed with the odd passage of brilliance that bucks that trend. 1 is my favourite, with 2 a close second. They really are beautiful packages when bought in vinyl format and really all are a must on that basis. You'll find weird and wonderful moments in them all. Yer friends will hate every single second!!!! :D
SYR1 and SYR2 are great, all the others were disappointing.
I've never been able to get into 4, 5, or 6. The first 3 are stellar, if you like the noisy, instrumental side of SY. (which you should)
3 and 4 are my two favorites, but I love them all (o.k. 5 I only like when I hit it just right, but the rest I love!) To me this is Sonic Youth through and through. Bad Moon Rising is my favorite album of all time though.
if you love sonic youth of course you should fucking bother with them. syr5 is my favorite. shows a totally different side of the band.

I'd say that you should bother yourself with SYR-releases. Maybe the best way is to explore records in release order starting from SYR1. I think that all of SYR-releases are great, but like everyone I also have my favorite ones (SYR1 & SYR3). List of my favorite "songs" from the first 4 SYR: Anagrama (SYR1) Tremens (SYR1) Stil (SYR2) Hungaro Vivo (SYR3) Radio-Amatoroj (SYR3) Having Never Written A Note For Percussion (SYR4) Edges (SYR4) |
syr1 is the best of syr series, it's listenable not just noise.
btw, can someone upload SYR4 in good quality ? cuz i cant buy this one in pl, and i have mp3 128 bitrate...
well, you have an internet connection, why don't you order it online? Just asking.
it's 25$ shipping included, not bad for a 2 cd release. |
I just bought SYR1 of itunes and I really like Anagrama and Tremens

because i don't have this kind of account, that i could pay in other countries... |
oww :( . here there are pretty useful (and easy to setup) debt cards, you "put" how much money you want in them (there are some limitations, but for record buying and "normal" online shopping they're perfect), and can pay with them visa-electron things and you can also use them with paypal, you might try and ask around if there's anything similar in your country.

I remember a feeling of crushing disappointment after 1 and 2 blew me away. |
