Song that can make you feel good no matter what mood you are in

I'm making a comp for my friend that is being isolated, and because of that, I have no idea what exact mood this person is in, although I'm sure it isn't a good one. I know some people like to listen to scary, wierd, depressing, etc. music when they are upset to be able to help them vent, but I also know that kind of music can really depress people too.

On the other hand, really stupid music- like say Scott Walker- Mathilde makes people like me laugh when I'm upset. Some people though would throw the CD player against the wall when hearing that kind of music and upset though.

So, how do I make a comp for someone who is probably in a really shitty mood but I have no way to tell exactly what shitty mood they are in?

Animal Collective - Winter's Love - Easily the happiest song ever.
Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
Arcade Fire - Laika
the Unicorns - I Don't Want To Die
Islands - Rough Gem
Mates of State - Ha Ha

Happy little songs.

'I Know There's An Answer' - The Beach Boys
'The Empty Page' - Sonic Youth
'Range Life' - Pavement
'Sexx Laws' - Beck

atsonicpark 05.21.2006 04:29 PM

Yeah, anything by islands is good..

I'd say any merzbow or sunnO))). Really cheery music.

acousticrock87 05.21.2006 04:30 PM

Maybe instrumental, or something blantantly unserious, you know that's obviously supposed to make you laugh. I don't know anything in particular to suggest, though, because it depends on your (or their) taste.

HaydenAsche 05.21.2006 04:31 PM

Xiu Xiu always makes me cry BUT cheers me up at the same time.

atsonicpark 05.21.2006 04:33 PM

b-52's - rock lobster.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.21.2006 04:36 PM

Maybe I should just make 3 CDs named "Catharsis", "Silly-happy", and "Emotionally Void." And let them choose.

Pavement seems like a good option though. It isn't super happy so that it would annoy people, and it isn't depressing enough to make a girl cry.

Atsonicpark, just seeing the title of that song makes me smile.

HaydenAsche 05.21.2006 04:37 PM

I am telling you. Burn her Animal Collective's Sung Tongs.

How'd you know it is a girl?

I better fully explain the situation at hand. This girl I like happened to have a lot of shit things happen to her, and she had a really bad weekend, so she skipped school on monday (she's 18 and a senior, don't be accusing me of perversion) so her mom sent her to the hospital. She is back from the hospital, but her mom isn't letting any of her friends she her or communicate with her. So I have decided the best way to help her would be to bake her some cookies and make her a CD. So, I know she is depressed right now, but I don't know how depressed. For all I know she could be depressed past the point of being amused by silly music or feeling catharsis from sad music.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.21.2006 04:56 PM

I think I'm actually forming an idea of what to put on it. Yay for me!

dazedcola 05.21.2006 10:36 PM

Husker Du- Flip Your Wig pretty much that entire record is so happy and cheerful, but not in a sickening way.

alyasa 05.21.2006 10:40 PM

I don't know, but (She's In A)Bad Mood always makes me feel better...

acousticrock87 05.21.2006 11:08 PM

That kind of stuff is usually a "thought that counts" thing. Don't stress too much about it, she'll like the fact that you made it for her.

Cosmic Dancer by T Rex or any other track off Electric Warrior. Light, danceable, with a hue of sadness combined with a greater hue of appetite for life's good sides.

If I put on Belle And Sebastians - Dear Catastrophe Waitress I always get in a jolly mood. The happy key-track here is Step Into My Office Baby. Some Pavement sure would not hurt. And Turbonegro - I got erection is really amusing.

Didn't work that well for Cleveland in family guy!

Uptown Girl, the original by Billy Joel and not the horrid cover version made by some boyband a few years back. And you hear it once, and it stays stuck in your head for days....

PAULYBEE2656 05.22.2006 11:19 AM

Niiccee, I'm seeing Islands in 4 hours from now; and I've never heard them before! My friend invited me to it haha.

I'm with Athousandthreads about Egowar; great song. I'm REALLY into Gang Gang Dance right now. I've been listening to Gang Gang Dance and Sigh continuously for the past while. Pavement and Stephen Malkmus can really make me happy at any time, along with a lot of stuff by Sonic Youth.

alyasa 05.22.2006 12:06 PM

Sonic Nurse

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.22.2006 02:01 PM

Here is what I think I'll end up doing (she's allowed out now apparently, but I'm going to give her the CD anyways)

Range Life- Pavement
Some Candy Talking- Jesus and Mary Chain
Telegram Sam- T. Rex
I'm So Green- Can
Taste of Cindy- Jesus and Mary Chain
Look Back in Anger- David Bowie
The Wagon- Dinosaur Jr.
I Disconnect From You- Gary Numan
Unfair- Pavement
Happy When it Rains- Jesus and Mary Chain
Kicker of Elves- Guided By Voices
Lose My Breath- My Bloody Valentine
I am a Passenger- Iggy Pop (Lust for Life would be too cliche IMO)
Surfin' USA- The Jesus and Mary Chain
Velouria- The Pixies
Little Johnny Jewel- Television
Map Ref. 41N 93W- WIRE
Just Like Honey- Jesus and Mary Chain

I'm not sure about David Bowie- Look Back in Anger or Gary Numan- I Disconnect From You

krastian 05.22.2006 02:06 PM

Rock 'N Me-Steve Miller Band

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 05.22.2006 03:31 PM

Grateful Dead--- Bertha (live, set opener)

that little G/C progression that they start up with never fails to get me into the groove and let the good times roll!

"i had a hard run, climbin out yr window, was all night runnin runnin, I wonder if you cared, I had a run in, run around and a run down, around the corner, Lord I smacked right into a tree!"

noisemachine 05.22.2006 09:34 PM

Belle & Sebastian - "Your Cover's Blown" or "Step into my Office Baby"
actually a lot of B&S songs would be good...

edit: also, anything by the boy least likely to would be good too.

It's great man! She'll be happy. You sure have good taste in happy music. Shoulda included a Belle & Sebastian song, but all in all the mix looks good.
