I think you can have different taste in music and still fall for each other. I never got that whole I like everything you like, don't get me wrong it is nice to have some music in common. But for me music is my thing not the other, if they don't like it that is fine. With my boyfriend, his thing is movies, while my thing is music and we are just fine like that. So what i am trying to say, is that I don't need to have anything in common with someone to be able to fall in love with.

I could someone in love with someone you don't love Sonic Youth, but music is my life, so I think I couldn't fall in love with someone that would have really different musical tastes. For instance, the last girl I fell in love with listened to Jeff Buckley, Eels, and loved the bands I made her discover (Redjetson, Boards Of Canada, Slowdive...).

I think because music is such an important part of my life, it'd be important to me to have someone who had similar taste. I think people's taste reveals a lot about their personality.

I've tried and it hasn't worked. How can I love someone who doesn't love wailing blasts of guitar noise and energy, and intense melodic and dissonant contrasts? That's who I am as a person. To me that is like trying to love a republican or a scientologist. They just see the world and beauty in a completely different way than I do.

Yes, I could. I don't believe in the whole "music is my life" philosophy. Reminds me of elitist hipster types that diss people behind their back for liking some band. I never advocate insulatory thinking. Hell, my brother was never much of a Sonic Youth fan apart from Daydream Nation even though he was the one that turned me on to them. It hasn't been until now that I've began to start bringing him over with Trees Outside and Sonic Nurse from his cynical opinion of the youth.

Yes, but they would probably have to be very interested in music. Not exactly the same music as me, but it'd be good if we could turn each other onto different music.

well, i can see them not liking anything before daydream nation or goo as much as hardcore punk. evol and sister are still pretty abrasive to the "normal" music listener.

I can understand logical reasons why some people don't like Sonic Youth. They're vocals aren't the greatest, vocals and lyrics in general take a second seat, some people are bored by guitar noise rocking, etc.

By which I mean, however important SY are to me (not very > not at all lately) doesn't really make any odds to me or whoever I'm sticking my genitals in/ around/ towards. I'm sure they'll like something I won't, and I'm sure we'll have contrasting opinions on more important things, like politics (in the broadest sense).

Arguments are fun. I would be very hesitant about marrying someone with the same taste as me. "Boy, Sonic Youth sure are ok, aren't they?" "They sure are baby" [pause] "What exactly are we going to do for the next 40 years then?"

As an aside... These days, I have more love for Radiohead than Sonic Youth and just about any other existing/working band.

Also, I'm very defensive of my taste, so if this theoretical woman that doesn't like Sonic Youth is outspoken, it is just a recipe for disaster, because she probably hates a lot of other stuff I like and there would be plent of arguments. Also since I play noisy fuzzy arty stuff interspersed with melodies, I'd know that she secretly dislikes my stuff too.

The girls I've fallen in love with all had decent taste in music, so I wouldn't really know if I'd be able to love someone with a shit taste in music. I don't think it's mandatory to have the same taste in music though it is certainly a turn-on.
Nonetheless I do think that having mutual interests is important in a relationship. How can you love someone if that person doesn't like anything you like?

that's it! when i get married all that is going to play is sonic youth. and if my bride doesn't like it then fuck her and i'm going to dump her on the dance floor while i'm doing the worm to she's in a bad mood. that's what she gets for not enjoying the same things as me on our wedding day.

Hahahaha. I don't think I could do an all Sonic Youth wedding reception if I got married. A lot of their stuff isn't very condusive to dancing. Well traditional undrunken dancing that is.

Could you imagine a wedding reception with a bride who has completely different taste in DANCE music? Now that would be a disaster. She'd want to do the electric slide, you'd want to do the time warp.

The only thing I would rather have is that we can have a conversation about anything. Also to not be a prude about certain things.
