Sonic Youth gearing up to write new album

http://www.nme.com/news/sonic-youth/34282

Thurston Moore reveals plans to NME.COM
Sonic Youth a preparing to write a brand new album, which the band aim to release early next year.

The band performed two songs songs ‘Jams Run Free’ and ‘Cool Thing’ during the Marc Jacobs runway show at the Armory on Lexington Ave on Friday night, and speaking after the show, Thurston Moore said they’re gearing up to write the follow-up to 2006's 'Rather Ripped' this spring.

‘We haven’t gotten together in about four months, we’ve been taking a nice sort of break, which is good. I’ve been actually able to escape into the basement. We’re going to Australia next week for about two weeks then we’ll come back and start writing.’

Meanwhile, Moore will perform at SXSW in March, which he will attend with Ecstatic Peace acts Awesome Color and Tall Firs.

‘We just go down there just for fun. It’s kind of a weird thing because the bands don’t really make any money, hardly at all, and we tell them if you want to come and play, come and play but there’s not any money and you’ve gotta sleep in the street! It’s like 75 degrees, blue skies, and there’s barbecues… good times!”

so is NOW fair to assume they are looking towards a 2009 release?

i think some people will be happy they won't be rushing it and hoping for a chance

SYRFox 02.11.2008 05:23 PM

Yaha! Great! Bring on the good jams!

This Is Not Here 02.11.2008 05:41 PM

Yes! My first Sonics album as a fan. Anyone got any ideas what sort of sound it might have too it, the straightforward approach of Rather Ripped or back to more explorative territory, if their cover I'm Not There is anything to go by I suspect the former. To be honest, I don't really mind, they do them both so well. 2009 couldn't come too soon.

pbradley 02.11.2008 06:08 PM

Rather Ripped was a fine album by general standards but it doesn't have the staying power that SY's other albums have. I want to hear some noise jamming.

i am.

auto-aim 02.11.2008 09:50 PM

this is good.

barnaclelapse 02.11.2008 11:28 PM

Works for me.

And I actually liked Rather Ripped.

It wasn't anything grand, and I think that was good.

The whole was just good old-fashioned rock and roll (in the Sonic Youth sense of the word).

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 12:22 AM

Early next year?! Aww they broke the trend. I liked Rather Ripped too, but it lacked noise.

✌➬ 02.12.2008 12:28 AM

FUCK YEAH. Hope they go more poppier, but if it is a trend they will revert to some noise, or as rob likes to call it skronk.

atsonicpark 02.12.2008 12:31 AM

I was kinda meh on Nurse and Rather Ripped was fairly disappointing, but I have a feeling this album will be good.. no reason really. Just a feeling.

It won't be as good as this though:

Everyneurotic 02.12.2008 12:33 AM

hahahaha, sid sings.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 12:46 AM

I would like to address this question to Adam:
What was wrong with Nurse? I thought all the necessary boxes were ticked. Noise: Check
Jams: Check
Good Melodies: Check
Lee Songs: Check
Jim: Check

Death & the Maiden 02.12.2008 12:59 AM

I'd like them to do something completely different to Rather Ripped, maybe something very noisy and dissonant.

atsonicpark 02.12.2008 01:08 AM

Zero, I didn't dislike nurse, I just found it meh.

I think it starts out really strong but some of the songs dont' do anything for me (dude ranch nurse, arthur doyle hand cream, peace attack). It's mostly good but not something I want to put on often.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 01:13 AM

Peace Attack is great IMO. I believe it's my favourite one from the album.

Dead-Air 02.12.2008 01:17 AM

I just hope Thurston doesn't come out of the basement when they record it.

SYRFox 02.12.2008 03:06 AM

So maybe they'll come back with a more experimental album... Look, back in 1995 they released a really pop album, Washing Machine, after a serie of pop records, and then they took three years to write A Thousand Leaves, which was preceded by SYRs, and A Thousand Leaves is far more experimental.

Now they're probably gonna release this on 2009 which means three years after Rather Ripped, a pop record, and they're about to release two new SYRs.

I predict a harsh noise / jazzcore album coming

dressedindreams 02.12.2008 03:19 AM

I just want a song that lasts over 7 minutes. Everytime they've done that i've been happy.

mil_pl 02.12.2008 03:52 AM

yes thurston ! go to the studio and record some great songs !
i hope it'll be more like sonic nurse than rather ripped.

sonicl 02.12.2008 03:52 AM

I have a good feeling about what the next SY album could be like. Rather Ripped was, I believe, another SY album that started life as a prototype Thurston solo album. Now that T has got the urge to write a solo album out of his system, I predict an SY album that is more of a group effort, and is correspondingly brilliant.

Fingers crossed...

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 03:55 AM

That's a good outlook.

Moshe 02.12.2008 03:58 AM

I felt that the real problem with RR is that SY didn't have anything to say.
They just made it because they had to. They didn't put enough time and emotions into their work.
Hopefully they will have something to say with this one and they will find the time together to explore some new ideas.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 04:01 AM

No I agree. I thought some of the lyrics were a bit generic for SY.

sarramkrop 02.12.2008 04:22 AM

Nevermind another ''experimental'' effort, it would be cool to hear another ace Sonic Youth album, since the last two were a disappointment. Like atsonicpark said, I too have a feeling that this might be a good one. Thanks for the news, Moshe.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 04:42 AM

Hell yes they're coming to Australia. And I'm going to be there :D

Yeah, it is. The only person I know who has shown interest in SY was a friend of mine - they listened to Goo, and their favourite song was My Friend Goo.

Despite a lot of catchy songs, I think Washing Machine is a very experimental song. Don't forget that "Diamond Sea" was the biggest "hit" from that album (including the song they made a video for)! The title track is also awash with noisy goodness (pun semi-intended...)

Washing Machine came on the tail of their arguably least experimental album to date (the one with "experimental" in the title, those wacky kids!) and after that one and Dirty, WM was totally a return to Sonic "we ain't gonna break in the charts so we better stop trying and just do what we do best" Youth. Sure it's got "Becuz", but A Thousand Leaves has got "Sunday" which is significantly more poppy really.

Which all doesn't mean you might not be right about what they'll do next (never can tell with them, thankfully). I just hate to see my favorite album from the '90s (except arguably SYRs 3 & 4) mis-characterized.

greenlight 02.12.2008 12:01 PM

I'm looking forwad like everybody else. hopefully we'll get SYR before it, which should be noisy (that's for sure), but hopefully not only vinyl realease.

krastian 02.12.2008 04:03 PM

Thurston as Luke: We should try and make a more ambitious album.
Steve as Yoda: No, try not. Do or do not.....there is no try.
