Which console do I go for?
Alright, I've realised it's time I got myself a games console. Last one I played extensively was my trusty N64 and I'm in dire need of an upgrade.
I already have a DS and I'm liking Nintendo's style, hence I'm thinking about a Wii. Shame the planet's been out-of-stock for the past few months. That said, Gran Turismo 5 looks promising, and the PS3 is pretty easy to find. Pricey though. Xbox 360... nice range but it seems a bit of a spotty teenager's console of choice. Which way do I go?! I'll probably wait until January either way. |
perhaps a gamers forum would be a better place to ask
|
Well I've seen plenty of people talk about gaming here in the past. Plus I think a gamers' forum will always be filled with people intrinsically biased toward one brand or another because they're fanboys whereas that's less likely to happen here.
C'mon, seriously, someone must have an opinion here? |
Depends on what you want. If you are looking for a lot of shoot 'em up games, go PS3. If you want some shoot 'em ups that you can play online, or anything that you want online, Xbox has the best live support. If you want more classic "fun" (in the more traditional sense) oriented games, go Wii.
I'd say Wii. It is the cheapest, most fun if you ask me, and definitely the best to play with others, not to mention innovative. It isn't too hard to find a Wii. My dad found two in the past two or three weeks and bought them for people that didn't have the time to get them. |
i highly recommend the wii, being one of the souls lucky 'nough to grab one
before the insane holiday demand. while it isn't the graphically superior console, it makes up for the lack of flash with fun games. wii sports is addicting enough without even getting into super mario galaxy, twlight princess, etc. and the impending super smash bros. brawl! nintendo FTW pretty much. the wii goes up even higher in my estimation since its compatible with gamecube discs. my boyfriend handed over metroid prime and the zelda collectors edition for my enjoyment and yeah...i had kinda forgotten how ocarina of time can own ones life. the only console i would absolutely avoid is the ps3. as you said, way too expensive. i don't own an xbox 360, but i have played games on it (either in kiosks or on others' home systems) and reputation as the ultimate fanboy console aside, it does have a pretty cool selection of games. i keep hearing and seeing about the continuing issues with the system freezing up though, much more than is normal for a console. that's what's kept me from really wanting one. |
hmm depends if there are any games that your fond of
some games dont go on all consoles such as Metal Gear Solid, which is only for Ps3 where as the GTA series is for all. i have been a PS man all the way through..but i seem to be slightly disappointed with this next gen business, im preferring the xbox at the moment but i will have to get a ps3 as MGS is my fav game and i NEEED to play it. does that help? |
the wii is very fun, nintendo always do quality shit and you can't go wrong.
|
The PS3 has terrible games out. I've never really been a big fan of Sony in general.
I'd like to play Little Big Planet because it looks fun, and is pretty visually stunning, but they don't have much else that I care about. |

google "consolador" & you'll find what you need
|
Yeah I'm quite into classic games like Mario and Zelda and GTA will probably come out on the PC. That said, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, MGS... urgh... PS3 looks good too.
The other thing I'm not sure about is the Wii control system which looks fun but I imagine it gets pretty frustrating after a while? EDIT: consolador, y'say? I'll look into it... EDIT 2: Yeah... thanks for that. |

Lol, no... the whole dilemma. I can't afford two damned consoles is all. I know I'll at least partially regret buying any of the three. |
Seriously, Wii. Wii. Wii. Wii.
I don't play any games on my dad's PS3. I only use it to watch movies. The only game my dad plays on it is Ratchet and Clank. I haven't seen him play anything else. |

i think the word you were looking for was "prick". yeah. |
go with wii. you can't go wrong with nintendo. ps3 is a waste of money (500 bucks) with crappy looking games and the xbox 360 has some good games but it mostly sucks.
|
I've been playing games for 16 years, and I can safely say that the current generation of consoles is by far the worst selection I've ever seen. Every one of the current consoles is pretty bad. But if you have to get one..
Let's see... the Wii is shitty, but it's cheap and it's got Zelda and Mario and Smash Brothers and Paper Mario! And honestly, Smash Brothers is so good that it's probably worst the cost of the console. So, it wins. Plus, you can play all the cool Gamecube games you missed, like Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia Legends. So far, not a single RPG or strategy game or puzzle game on it worth playing, which sucks, but I see the Wii coming out ahead. Plus, it's big in Japan, so there'll be plenty of fun and creative games eventually coming out for it. Just.. not many yet. I waited in line 17 hours to get a Wii for my girlfriend, and she loves the hell out of it. So, yeah. If you have a girlfriend, definitely get one, they'll play with you! The 360 has some cool games, but I see it kind of falling off the map soon since it is DEAD in Japan (where most good games come from). If you're REALLY into first person shooters, I'd pick it up, but yeah. I'm not a fan in the least. The PS3 is a fucking piece of shit without a single good game. The PS1 and the PS2 were AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING systems with literally a hundred or so GREAT games on each system. The PS3 has not a single good game. Honestly, the PS2 is still the best system around (fuck, Persona 3 and Odin Sphere just came out for it a few months ago, and those games are amazing! And Atlus is doing Persona 4 for it also! Plus, have you really played through La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, Disgaea 1 and 2, or Makai Kingdom yet? Didn't think so.. the ps2 RULES!), though the Nintendo DS has the only games I currently care about. So, yeah.. get a DS. |
Mario Galaxy is damn adictive.
|
I was hoping there would be an I don't know or care about video games option.

Smash Bros isn't out yet! Wha?! |
my brother still plays the gamecube smash brothers. since you only have a n64 you can always get a gamecube. it's great system and it's only 99 bucks now.
get contra 4 for the ds if you haven't yet. |
N64 is still great. Bond 007 is unbeatable.

My (gamer) brother says that Gamecubes are now $30 used at any game store. That's pretty good. I would go with Wii. I play my brother's when I have nothing better to do. It's innovative, cheap, and has all the rehashed characters you love from N64. |
id leave the Wii to be something u play at your friends house
and buy a box or Pstriiiippleee |
Wii for the win!

Sega Genesis Emulator + Sonic The Hedgehog 3+ PS2 controller as PC Joystick = Love

Amstrad GX4000.

The Wii is a gimmick system. It's fun if you like to get your friends together to play video games. That's what I have DDR for. The graphics are sub par and with the exception of Mario and Zelda the games lack any kind of engaging depth. I'm ecstatically happy with my Xbox 360 and have no desire for any other system. The XBox live aspect of the system is great. Lots of game demos, HD trailers, and other cool freebies. It's also tons of fun to play people online.
I'm currenltly addicted to Mass Effect, Rock Star Table Tennis, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and DDR Universe. |

Actually - this paragraph is very good advice. The DS is chock full of innovative, cool games with depth. The PS2 has an unbeatable library and there are still amazing games being released for it at the moment. |
No, Smash Brothers isn't out yet -- it comes in February, to the person who inquired. Absolutely do not get a Gamecube -- terrible advice. Might as well say, "Get a PS1!" I'd get a DS, by far. But by this time next year, there should be a definitive "next-gen console" to buy, there just aren't enough games to choose which of the 3 systems are the best yet (though the best really is the 360 right now just going by games alone, I see the quality dropping off real soon, like I said, since Japan is where the majority of good games come from, fact ).
|
wii! you may end up with serious injuries so i strongly reccommend it. i have mentioned this but the other day we had a wii tournament and i got a huge chunk knocked off my tooth. not a fucking dent in the wiimote though.

i want super smash sooo bad. i'll probably buy it like the day it comes out because that's my favorite game ever. i have it for the N64 though. |
I own a Wii and a 360 and there both a lot of fun but they both have there downsides. The wii is awesome at first but it tends to get boring after a while and the xbox is overall great but mine broke down like two times before and I know other people who's xboxes have fallen apart too.
So it's really a tie between those two. PS3 sucks. |

The newest Xboxes have better heatsinks and processors and don't have the breakdown problems that the earlier ones did. They also have nifty HDMI ports for your HDTV. |
