pink floyd

what an incredible band. that's all i have to say.
rotten was jealous he didn't have the capacity to make music like this.

uhler 12.13.2007 10:14 PM

i prefer the syd barrett era pink floyd, but yeah i think their post barrett stuff was good too.

Cantankerous 12.13.2007 10:29 PM

dark side of the moon...brain damage/eclipse. fuck me. they were almost like every other psychedelic rock band of the 60s with syd. they became a lot more developed after they booted him out.

the ikara cult 12.13.2007 10:38 PM

I hate Pink Floyd
thats my critical analysis

Cantankerous 12.13.2007 10:51 PM

that's perfectly alright, i despise pavement, which i'm sure i'll get a lot of shit for on this board.

BURN THE WITCH!

Cantankerous 12.13.2007 10:54 PM

god, i just hate them so much. uuuugh.

Everyneurotic 12.13.2007 11:10 PM

i love floyd post-syd/pre-dark side, but i'm fine with most of their career, i'm kinda sick of the wall though.

That's so untrue. Can you honestly name a single '60s band that sounds at all like The Pink Floyd? The only vocalists I can think of that sound anything like Syd are the people in later years that he influenced from Bowie to Ka-Spel, Cope, and Hitchcock. He was one of the most distinctive front men of his era, though obviously he didn't have the means to carry on into the next.

Cantankerous 12.13.2007 11:38 PM

it's the general "let's sing about space and fairies and gnomes and castles and kings" psychedelic music of the 60s, i wasn't really referring to the arrangement specifically, just the themes and the guitar sound and things like that. specific elements of it. i love it, but it can (and has been) so easily copied.

flophousefloozie 12.13.2007 11:47 PM

King Crimson

Cantankerous 12.13.2007 11:50 PM

also are good.

FUCK YES.

that would be the best slogan ever.
yessongs is good but typically i don't care for them.

Everyneurotic 12.14.2007 12:04 AM

one of my favorite songs ever is roundabout and fragile is fucking amazing, i have to be in the mood for relayer...i think i like them better live; but yeah, they can be too much.

Cantankerous 12.14.2007 12:05 AM

roundabout is a really good track. but yeah you do have to be in a particular mood to listen to them.

this is not quite relevant but storm thorgerson is a fucking weirdo. his voice!

Everyneurotic 12.14.2007 12:06 AM

rather have them than genesis or jethro tull or rush, that's for sure.

Cantankerous 12.14.2007 12:07 AM

yeah, absolutely. holy shit i hate all three of those bands. phil collins really does deserve to be bludgeoned unmercifully for his crimes against humanity.

Everyneurotic 12.14.2007 12:09 AM

and emerson lake and palmer!!! ugggh!!!

can't believe one of them played in crimson and the other with arthur brown and still blow so hard.

Cantankerous 12.14.2007 12:12 AM

emerson lake and palmer suck major cock.

Everyneurotic 12.14.2007 12:13 AM

definitely

you're right about the fragile.

SuperCreep 12.14.2007 07:15 AM

If you ignore the pomposity the bulk of their work, Greg Lake was able to craft a lot of great shorter songs like From the Beginning and Lucky Man, among a handful of others. I agree that a lot of their work just flat-out sucks, but if you hear them on a compilation, they're pretty damn good.

I can never quite understand how Genesis (at least when they were fronted by Peter Gabriel) get such bad rep. I just don't know how someone can praise post-Barrett era Floyd and hate Genesis. You could prefer one over the other, but to love one and hate the other, I just don't get.

gmku 12.14.2007 07:46 AM

I've wanted to get into Floyd, but every time I hear a cut from Dark Side, I feel nauseated.

Sorry, tank...

sarramkrop 12.14.2007 08:14 AM

The whole period with Barrett is fantastic and so creative. I like bits and bobs from some of the other records, but it doesn't beat the raw energy of those first two albums. This is just personal taste, though, because they were a pretty good band even without Barrett, just not for me.

gmku 12.14.2007 08:15 AM

Pied Piper is on my wish list, actually. I just never see it in the stores.

finding nobody 12.14.2007 11:18 AM

Was way into them in 8th grade. They've got a solid discography up until Waters left. But, I've heard good things about division bell, so I could be wrong. I did not like A Momentary Lapse of Reason (I think that's the name)

batreleaser 12.14.2007 11:42 AM

the rest of floyd resents the fact that the music they made with syd was the only thing inventive and "cool". dark side is ok, animals is ok, the WALL IS FUCKING SELF INDULGENT BULLSHIT

Pavement are not original at all, they borrowed all their sound from Television and The Fall, and I can't stand their "fucking-up on purpose" of their songs, it's not brave it's just stupid and lazy and it only makes for tedious listening.

EDIT: I don't want to offend Pavement fans (I hadn't slept a lot when I wrote that), that's just my opinion off course.

Torn Curtain 12.14.2007 12:25 PM

Meddle is my favorite Pink Floyd record, I'm always blown away every time I listen to Echoes.

jonathan 12.14.2007 02:03 PM

I'm really not a fan of any of their records after Dark Side of the Moon. Meddle blows me away and Piper at the Gates of Dawn is just fucking remarkable.

I've searched loooong and hard for a band that sounds like anything from Piper at the Gates of Dawn and I have yet to find it...

Protectmeyou 12.14.2007 03:21 PM

the live side of Ummagumma is my fav. beautiful improv.

bories 12.14.2007 03:30 PM

Pink Floyd sucks; they play shows for 85 dollar a person. For what? For throwing balloons at your face. For letting pigs fly.

I agree. I don't find The Wall nearly as good as I did when I was younger.

1967-1977 (sans the More soundtrack) + The Final Cut are all great imo.

Savage Clone 12.14.2007 04:54 PM

Up to and NOT including Dark Side Of The Moon, I love this music deeply.
Dark Side forward, they are dead to me.
