Chris Lawrence, look out behind you...

edit- after realizing the link I provided was offering illegal SY downloads I deleted the link to the site.

nicfit 10.09.2007 08:17 AM

uhh all those official releases download links....huh.

atari 2600 10.09.2007 08:20 AM

Yeah, that's pretty fucked.

nicfit 10.09.2007 08:23 AM

yeah, also in the links section there's a blog with many official releases' download links... well, all in all we are kinda pro-sharing on this board, but sy official stuff is still taboo (and with good reason, methinks).

...weird how they would do all that work and then spoil it by linking to official releases...the place isn't built to last.

what they should do is offer truncated versions of the officially released tracks...samples...or failing that, they should offer them at a very low bitrate.

atari 2600 10.09.2007 08:28 AM

absolutely it is, and the officially released stuff is just plain illegal.

but hey, according to swa(y), it's all hunky dory.

dunno, maybe the ads are "forced" by the hosting since the site seems to be one of those free things... well, at least here in italy many "free" hosting services put "forced" ads here and there, and you don't gain anything with those, but the providers do, and that way they can give you your free hosting space..dunno if what I said here is clear, sorry.

Call Geffen? Eh..

atari 2600 10.09.2007 09:09 AM

yeah, it's probably the publishers of the free site that's making the money...you're right, nicfit. i had a knee-jerk reaction.

atsonicpark 10.09.2007 09:59 AM

fuck yea, gettin the withey album as we speak!

nicfit 10.09.2007 10:05 AM

ha, adam you chose a cheap one.

greenlight 10.09.2007 10:25 AM

huh?

Everyneurotic 10.09.2007 10:56 AM

yeah, like it's the first time someone shares an in print, widely available album on the internet.

call lars ulrich.

atari 2600 10.09.2007 11:02 AM

I checked, and the only ones I don't already have are
KEKELAND (2001) & THE HARRY SMITH PROJECT (2006) which are categorized under "rarities."

Many here have most of these that are any good already (Lisbon '93, Dusseldorf '96, etc.) One good one that many may not have though is "Europe '92" from Rome.

The thing I don't like much is the fact that the site is somewhat "dedicated" to sy , and that all the boots and stuff are a nice thing for people who don't have them, but the official releases are a bit of a "bad taste" addition. Sure, you can easily find them around the web, even with no links on that site, but putting the links so "publicly" ruins a bit what could be a really interesting and overall nice site. Just my 2 cents, no need to raise much fuss or to ask for that guy/girl's crucifixion (of sean penn).

Everyneurotic 10.09.2007 11:12 AM

buzzo posted a blog that had the whole official discographies of mudhoney, dinosaur jr, pearl jam, soundgarden, etc.

i've come across plenty blogs that post whole discographies in one go.

of course, as sy fans, it seems bad but, at the same time, a lot of us go around looking for other sites to find other bands' discographies.

i agree nobody should post this on here since it's the sonic youth board, but, like a few months ago when someone asked for blogs with sun city girls' albums, don't you think there's other people and other blogs that are looking to check out sonic youth?

it was bound to happen and it's not sad or anything.

Yes, as I said official releases are easy to find around the web, I agree with you on everything you said, but my point is that I think the guy must be a SY fan too, and as you said "as sy fans, it seems bad", that's why I think the official releases links are a bit "bad tasted", that's all. I mean, I think that that site would be better without them, all in all, from a sonic-youth-fan-site-creator-pov if you understand what I mean :D.

Is it possible that "one of us" has uploaded this blog...

It certainly seems probable that they are at least a lurker if not a registered member; whether they are a regular poster or not is a subject for debate.

Danny Himself 10.09.2007 05:40 PM

I have my money on this dude: http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/member.php?u=586

They posted a link to that Sonic Death file in a previous post. If you look at their posts you'll see what I mean.

atsonicpark 10.09.2007 11:27 PM

Whoa, there's a blog with tons of Sun City Girls albums?! (I mean, they do have like 200 OOP albums..)

Bal 10.10.2007 01:22 AM

ok sooo
i dont think this guy reads the board.
i sent him a message and he wrote me back imediatley.
hes really nice. im trying to convince him to remove all the links to official releases but with this hes trying to fight/destroy all the 'evil' major lables...
how naiv.
i think you should all send him a massege and explain him why he shouldnt have links to official releases...
he seems to be really cool but a bit silly... so dont attack him!

Moshe 10.10.2007 02:18 AM

I have deleted the link in my first post.

Here is a link to a legitimate great sy site that I'm not sure everyone here knows:
http://sylrdb.free.fr/

sonicl 10.10.2007 02:29 AM

Having had a look at the site (the one that the thread's about), I'm not honestly all that impressed. Yeah, it list lots of albums and has some pictures and tracklists, but it's nowhere near as informative or interesting as Chris' site. And, for me, the idea of being able to get a band's whole output in one easy place goes against the idea of being a record collector. Part of the fun of the exercise is the thrill of the chase. Going to a site to download it all is rather like going to one of those "game ranches" where they drug wild animals to give an enthusiatic amateur half a chance of shooting them.

You're presuming that we are all against his blog...

so how come he has SYR stuff readily available for download?

scott v 10.10.2007 10:35 AM

also the thing that kills me is that this guy also puts the disclaimer and i've seen it at other blogs, "for all official releases, the files are to be deleted within 24 hrs and are to be only used for promotional purposes only". I mean how does he have the right to decide on behath of the band what is to be used as promotional and not??? and how is he going to now that this is actually going to happen is everyone who is going to upload going to do delete the files in good faith??? c'mon lets not kid ourselves with this bullshit disclaimer which basically is an attempt to "cover his own ass" if he gots caught in some sort of SNAFU...

Also on every "official" release there are very obvious written copyrights written on the liner notes or the disc itself, only "copying or distribution is a violation of law" this is the standard that has been set in place, what is happening is a violation and not fair to the band as they have lost the right on how their released material or how their label is distributing the music! the band has made a decision to have the label and its distribution do these things for them, so please... the argument of blame the "Majors" is utter crap to me... the live and out of print stuff is fantastic but i do agree the "official" stuff he has is in bad taste, but that is only my opinion and really not ultimately up to me or us for him to remove, however i'd think anyone who does this sort of thing is running a risk of being fined or looking at some sort of penalty as i believe it will only be a matter of time before the authorities catch up w/ the reality that "free music file sharing" has moved from software programs like napster soulseek etc etc... to "blog sites".
