The beauty and power of rock music
cannot be denied. What do you like most about rock music?
floppy boot stomp.
Ahh...
Agression. I see rock as a manifestation of emotion, and "sex" isn't really an emotion.
the farmer screamed and blew the sky off the mountains?
It saves me from being physically aggressive towards certain people.
Indeed.
The floppy boot stomped down into the ground The farmer screamed 'n blew the sky off the mountains Eye sockets looked down on the chestbone mountains 'n the sun dropped down, 'n the moon ran off, His heels 'n elbows pale as chalk 'n all the comets collided 'n blew t' dust For fear they'd be seen. 'n the sky turned white in the middle of the night 'n the sky turned white in the middle of the night 'n the big floppy boot stomped down into the ground 'n the red violin took the bow to do the hoodoo hoe-down 'n the red violin took the bow for to do the hoodoo hoe-down The farmer jumped in ah circle 'n flung his chalk right down Do-si-do the devil sho' showed 'n he broke of his horns 'n fiddled him down the road through the fork 'n the farmer's floppy boot stomped down Red tail squirmin' and the hot leg kicked 'n the fire leaped 'n licked And when the boot came up, the fire went out And hell was just an ice cube melting off on the ground. And the bold caught down for to do the hoodoo hoedown And the bold caught down for to do the hoodoo, the devil hoedown To the fork, huddlin’ in a hollow, standin’ at the crossroads With that bunged-up bandaged broken bum that fell in the wrong circle He had a sole red tail – once went red, now was pale Fe Fi Fo Fum he was summoned up from hell Booted down a spell By a square-dancin’ farmer By a square-dancin’ farmer, well That old bum was sticking out his thumb When the farmer drew up, said "Listen son", and the horse compared his hooves. "If you fall into my circle again I’ll tan your red hide And dance you on your tail, and pitch you from now to now Pitch you from now to now." And the hotlick kicked, and the fire leaped an’ licked And the hotlick kicked and the fire just leaped an’ licked And the hotlick kickin’ an’ the fire jus’ leapin’ an’ lickin’ And the fire leaped and licked. |
What is that?

the beauty and power of rock music!
by captain beefheart. |
Unfortunately, I have not gotten around to hearing that band yet, cultish though its reputation may be... Could you describe the music to me?
the blues
Like The Year Punk Broke? "This is known as the blues scale"
Well.. it depends on what album you hear..
but the "classic" Beefheart sound kinda sounds like 4 musicians playing completely different songs with a guy reciting poetry in no time signature over top.. yet somehow there are occasional melodies and lots of hooks.. the sound later got weird yet more accessible, then it got too accessible and was boring, then it got weird again, then.. I dunno. Just, if you get a chance, listen to anything except "unconditionally guranteed" and "bluejeans and moonbeams". It may not register at first -- it didn't with me -- but eventually you'll be hooked. |
Everyone from the fall to franz ferdinand seems to like them... :) thanks for the info... Coincedentally, no one voted for sex or; sex.
rock and roll is all about sex, rock literally means sex. for all i know roll means something similar too.
DEATH
Seriously though, is rock aggression? Punk is rock, and punk is aggression, or so says Primal Scream. I seem to have this feeling that rock is Sex...
Seriously though, rock is death is like the Nick Drake route, right... Or Tom Waits...
Rock is catharsis.
So is sex, really. It's an umbrella term. I like to rock. |

You Greeks are weird. |

the death metal guys tend appeal to the opposite spectrum. there's a point where rock moves away from witchcraft into full-on black majick (with the latter being far more taxing on the soul). now, shall I begin an incantation to get that stain off yr shirt, or would you just like a towel? ;) |
Funny how the liberating qualities that I enjoy in some music (rock, punk) are the first things to go.
agression
I chose dancing because I love to dance. I can dance alone or with the ladies or with large, sweaty groups of homosexual men.

I think it's quite interesting how music can be a medium for the different emotions, sometimes even complex emotions and yet, it can also serve as more of a philosophical piece of art, which I believe to have greater significance. The philosophical aspect of a piece of music is more obvious when it is used in the context of film, where music is played to directly or indirectly represent the action happening in a particular scene. Slightly off topic, but I found this interesting and kind of clarifies my point a little: "The other horror music code which has emerged is what I call the sublime, and can also be found in every John Carpenter film. In Halloween (1978), Carpenter uses Laurie's Theme to evoke the chill of Halloween, as Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) walks home from school... the autumn leaves are blowing, children are playing in the distance, Michael is waiting behind the hedge. Laurie's Theme is not scary, it is haunting. Why? There is nothing intrinsic to the music which scares us; there is no discordance, no harshness. It is a minor piece, but if one listens to it out of context, it could easily represent a labor leader stoically taking the fifth instead of representing a psycopathic serial killer who cannot be stopped." Going back to my original point, the psychological and philosophical aspects of music, (not just in film music) fuel my interest, fuels my interest in rock music. |
Hence a poll... Music is inherently psychological, both in its enjoyment and appreciation and in its creation. There's just something so jungian about a person fiercely clinging onto a large piece of wood in thier hands, while simultaneously screaming and shoving a longish, cylindrical object into their mouths...
yeah ok, I suppose the thing I most enjoy about rock music is the intensity produced through drums and electric instruments, aggression delivered by subhuman brutality.
I like the generousity most rock musician displayed toward other human beings.
i like the rock n roll

Sex, drugs and image is just enough to get you by in the real world...
I chose dance. Which can be very sexual no matter how you look at it. |
