An LP I've groen to love more than I ever expected I would.

'Small Flowers Crack Concrete' is easily in my top five SY songs. 'Lightnin' is a great finisher. Thee whole LP holds my attention now.

Washing Machine was my first and still is my favorite, NYCG&F is def. in my top 5 though. Love that one too.

You and I generally have the same SY taste, so I'm very surprised to read this. To each their own I suppose.

NYC Ghost & Flowers is awesome though.

nyc g&f. wm had its moments (becuz, saucer-like, skip tracer . . . note that i do not include the diamond sea -- i don't understand what people like about it), but nyc g&f is overall better . . . it pushes more boundaries, has a more inaccessible feel to it -- i dunno, i just like it despite its strangeness and its oft-maligned nature.

I'm not being critical to the fact that you like NYC (which I do not, save for maybe 3 songs), but does inaccessibility to the masses make an album better for you? I'm asking without any sarcasm or malignancy. Just curious....

"The Diamond Sea" is the only redeeming factor of Washing Machine. the rest of the album seems like filler to me.

NYCG&F has more good songs and the title track is one of the best SY songs ever.

NYG&F was SY's worst album. But even for a "worst" it wasn't horrible, just not as good as any of their other albums.

it's been so long since we've had a decent sy discussion that i think i'll do a good post now.

for once, i can't really vote on this thread because i don't have either album, however i know many of the songs on them, plus i have bootlegs where they play many of the songs in these albums.

washing machine is considered a return to their more arty and experimental nature, nycg&f in a way relates to that same sense in that their song structures went away from the pop rock ones. wm does have one of the most beloved and simply plain "best ever" sy songs, the diamond sea, which makes it a fan favorite by that and that alone, yet it's charm doesn't end there because many more of those songs are amazing and underrated, and i mean underrated since the band has been discontinued to play them live, which is a shame. in a way, wm is sort of an evolution and sofistication of experiemental jet set trash & no star.

nycg&f is pretty abstract and it shows more of their process (as documented by the first 3 album on the syr series) than their songwriting process. i like side2side, renegade princess, lightnin', nycg&f...as i said before, i've heard just the live version and they seem fantastic to me.

well anyway, that's my opinion.
