No Fun 2004/2005 DVD
LOAD 087 DVD

Brooklyn in the year 2004 saw a meeting of the most unlikely minds. All the party wreckers of civilization that have been rattling in the closet for the 80's and 90's recording and performing that thing that is called "noise" and quietly drew close circle for a true oddity - a summit of some of the HI NRG soundmakers using every instrument within reach.

You hold in your hands a document of this strange thing. An open window in culture has allowed you to see this trade convention. The trade this convention is busking, you ask? the business of making human minds wrap themselves around furrowed brow sweat soaked oscillator operation, lap top foppery, cutlery amplification, guitar strangulation, and every other way to physically move air to the ear you can imagine. This is a DVD document of crazed live actions of sound pirates doing a log clog of frequency jam well outside the regular FM beamed crap that pollutes this stuffed melon hellhole: Battleship Earth. What are you waiting for, suit up.

A little mini-review thing because I forgot to post a review after going to the show mentioned above the DVD announcement...

I went to that Tarantula Hill Benefit Show and it was really really weird. First of all, it was pretty packed, not No Fun Fest Packed, but I would say there were at least 200 people there. That must have been great for Nautical Almanac and the Tarantula Hill crew considering it was a benefit and hopefully they got most if not all the proceeds.

Not so good for Nautical Almanac was that the majority of those people were younger kids probably (16 year olds through College Students) only there to see Lightning Bolt and Nautical Almanac actually got heckled at their own benefit show!!!

Like, seriously what the fuck? They actually played a great set... but the crowd was not into it all. It was funny like all these kids would crowd to the front before Kites and Double Leopards played and after like 5 minutes would just leave. Same thing during Nautical's set. Imbetween sets I heard a couple people saying stuff like "I like kept on waiting for the song to start..." Which made me and my girlfriend look at each other and crack up. It was half-good for us cause we got to stand front-row and center, but it kind of dampened the vibe, and when the Lightning Bolt fans actually got vocal when Nautical Almanac played it was just a fucking shame. Some guys to my left were giggling like something was funny (I guess nautical almanac look kind of funny when playing, but they use a lot of contact mics which require movement and it meshes with their noise-hippy image.)

This one kid was shouting stuff like "Stop acting!!!" and "Play you're instruments!!!" He looked like a music a student. Strange, I guess Lightning Bolt attracts closed-minded people who like them because of their technical abilities, or something? I thought people who liked Lightning Bolt would be pretty open-minded, but I guess because they have a Tech thing they attract that kind of element.

The majority of the crowd obviously didn't know that they were at a benifit for Nautical Almanac... that their money was going to them... and that the show was supposed to be a show of support for the rebuilding of Tarantula Hill. During this heckling Nautical Almanac looked visibly peeved to awkward/uncomfortable to a bit pissed off. They were really on though, played great stuff with limited equipment (Including a couple songs w/ drums, Twig on two string bass, and Carly on Violin), but I think they didn't play as long as they could have because the crowd was giving them shit. Carly announced they'd play their last song and people cheered... such bullshit. The only other person I saw toward the front of the stage having a blast other than me and my girlfriend was Kites who was grooving along.

Really odd.

Then Lightning Bolt played and were fucking intense awesome as usual. I just now have a bad image of their fans. Hell, at least Nautical Almanac got money from a shit load of people if not the love.

Oh, and does anyone know how different that NO FUN FEST 2004 gonna be than the limited release one I bought at the 2005 Fest? The limited one was pretty cool... and thanks to Chris Habib for putting it together but I hope the "official" release is a bit more comprehensive.

Iain 05.24.2006 03:26 PM

Huh. That really fucking sucks to hear about the Tarantula Hill benefit. But at least they got a good turnout and some cash to rebuild hopefully.

jennthebenn 05.24.2006 04:05 PM

what the fuck, nautical almanac are amazing. idiots.

HaydenAsche 05.24.2006 04:47 PM

Nautical Almanac is heavy shit. I hope that they can restore the building.

sorry i haven't been around. i've had eye problems since the begining of august.

nicfit 10.19.2006 03:45 PM

glad to see you back mr habib, hope your eyes are ok now.raise your rep points count ;) !

Moshe 10.19.2006 03:54 PM

Thanks for the list. I was waiting for this DVD for so long.
For people living outside of the USA, or even outside of NYC, this is a rare opportunity to watch all those great acts that we usually only get to hear or read about.

chabib 10.19.2006 03:58 PM

and an undocumented note of interest is that i did all of the music that plays over the titles, credits and interstitials on the dvds.

Cantankerous 10.19.2006 04:00 PM

way to toot your own horn, habib.

porkmarras 10.19.2006 04:02 PM

Well,i'd rather that my love..........

val-holla-ing 10.19.2006 10:32 PM

well i'll be doggone! this is a treat!

chabib 10.20.2006 09:41 AM

looks like we'll be screening the same cut we showed at anthology around europe soonish. unless you have a massive PA hooked up to your DVD player, yr gonna want to see this in a theatre or at a club. it sounded incredible in a proper cinema thru their dolby processor, and played from a large format digital master tape (as opposed to a compressed dvd).

the prurient set was just brutal.

the dvd turned out great too. it was nice to finally hold one in my hands.

sonicl 10.20.2006 09:45 AM

There's a cinema at ATP isn't there. Gonna show it there?

greenlight 10.20.2006 11:54 AM

wow!!!
is it going to be whole of that second list on dvd???
ranaldo/hooker/miller, want and must see it man!
