Should Pete Doherty Go To Jail?

Doherty escapes drugs jail term

A warrant was issued for Doherty's arrest because he was late

The singer Pete Doherty has escaped jail after a judge decided to defer sentencing him for drugs offences on condition he goes into rehab.
Doherty earlier pleaded guilty to possessing crack cocaine and heroin at West London Magistrates' Court.
He was warned by Judge Davinder Lachhar that he would go into custody if he failed to take up a place he was offered on a detox programme.
Doherty, 28, pleaded guilty to four counts of possessing illegal drugs.
As well as crack cocaine and heroin, he also pleaded guilty to possessing quantities of cannabis and ketamine as well as to two driving offences.
Last chance
Earlier, a warrant was issued for his arrest because he was more than two hours late for his hearing.
But the singer finally arrived and waded through a crowd of photographers into the court house.
At court the judge told him: "If you go to this place to have detox and take advantage of it then we will see what sentence is appropriate when you next come." "But if you do not I can tell you now that you will go into custody."

He was in a band called the Libertines, Then when that band dissolved he started a band called Babyshambles. Most famous for dating Kate Moss, taking drugs, and making an ass of himself in public.

sarramkrop 07.03.2007 11:11 AM

Yes, and they should throw the key away too.

Rob Instigator 07.03.2007 11:40 AM

is his music worth anything?

Washing Machine 07.03.2007 11:42 AM

The Libertines were quite good, well the second album was okay. Past that I dont really care.

floatingslowly 07.03.2007 11:46 AM

surely there is a worn out monkey in some animal research lab who needs a replacement?

the ability to consume large quantities of drugs (and survive) should be looked at as an asset!

jon boy 07.03.2007 11:47 AM

how many chances does a person need? he obviously needs help but i would like to see what would have happened to him if he where not famous.

!@#$%! 07.03.2007 11:55 AM

this poll should have been offered first:

Question: Should i give a shit?

Answer:
a) no
b) fuck that
c) does ANYONE give a shit?
d) british inside joke
e) all of the above

---

the correct answer is "e)"

ThePits 07.03.2007 11:58 AM

I'm not sure how or why you get what I'm saying, but I like it! maybe we should clone YOU.

please forward your genetic sequencing information to: doomedtofall@gmail.com and I will see that my top scientists get right on it.

congratulations, and welcome to EvilCorp.

screamingskull 07.03.2007 12:14 PM

Yes.

ThePits 07.03.2007 12:26 PM

You can clone me as long as the new me stands in for the real me and gives me a week off

Tokolosh 07.03.2007 12:36 PM

I couldn't care less, but I'll say no. ALL junkies need help, not imprisonment.
It's easier to get drugs in jail, that on the streets, so what good would it really do?

val-holla-ing 07.03.2007 12:43 PM

this dude is so far past rehabilitation, it doesn't even matter. i'd rather see him OD than carry on any longer.

I think the danger is if he does OD he will become some form of icon or martyr for some of the more socially disenfranchised kids that listen to his music

God help us......

jon boy 07.03.2007 01:05 PM

his music is utterly terrible.

damn. you're probably right. maybe he'll get hit by a bus? or brush his teeth and die of shock.

MellySingsDoom 07.04.2007 03:39 AM

Throw the loser in prison. We'll see how rock and roll he feels when some of the hornier prisoners try to give him a good seeing to.

sonicl 07.04.2007 03:41 AM

Why do I get the feeling that you're going to go on a very unsubtle shoplifting spree as soon as Doherty's prison sentence is imminent?

pbradley 07.04.2007 03:47 AM

I've never really listened to either of his bands and I find Kate Moss to be rather average looking.

Thrown in jail, die of an overdose... whichever.

It's a kleptogay thing. What's good enough for Winona Ryder is etc etc.

EDIT: Me? Buggering Pete Doherty? With my reputation?

Tokolosh 07.04.2007 06:15 AM

I wonder what the poll results would show if this thread was "Should Drug Addicts Go To Jail"?
This is specifically about Pete Doherty, isn't it? Banish me.

jon boy 07.04.2007 06:20 AM

i think its just the fact that he seems to get away with a lot because of his fame. if he where not famous he would have been inside long ago.

I agree with jon Boy, its the leniency and lattitude the courts have shown to this person, not the fact he is a drug addict per se

He has been released on bail and everytime has gone on to commit further offences

Your average person in the street, for doing the same thing, would have their bail revoked so fast it would make their head spin

Sending addicts to jail serves little purpose as drugs are actually easier to get inside and they are still addicts upon release

This guy has had the opportunity on numerous occasions to take advantage of rehab, opportunities most other addicts never get, and has wasted them

Let him rot in jail

Tokolosh 07.04.2007 06:50 AM

Like I said before, I couldn't give two shits about this person, but are we to incarcerate a junkie for his habit, or blame the rehab centre he was put into for not being able to help him successfully? Wouldn't it just be easier to legalize all drugs? Junkies that are too far down the road to turn back should be able to get a prescribed dose per day. Crime levels would drop, and if you don't believe me, check out our way of dealing with it in a city like Rotterdam.

sarramkrop 07.04.2007 06:54 AM

Yeah, but then people would start sniffing smelly shoes instead.

jon boy 07.04.2007 06:56 AM

thing is though he never stays at rehab he always leaves and goes on to do something else and the judge, soely based on his fame alone (he did mention this when sentencing him) let him go.

i understand what you mean about the lack of resources and poor quality medicare but if he had not written a lot of crap pub sing along songs he would slopping out with everyone else in wandsworth.

nicfit 07.04.2007 06:58 AM

I think he's "out" also because he can afford to pay big fines/bail bonds (is this the right term?) with lotsa cash, not just because he's famous.

sonicl 07.04.2007 07:25 AM

He (or his record company) can afford to pay for the sort of lawyers that are usually busy getting business tycoons and politicians off charges of corruption.

There is also proof that many junkies who are prescribed regular doses still top up with illegal drugs

Also, if I remember correctly, didn't the overall addict figures go up in Holland despite prescription drugs?

Tokolosh 07.04.2007 08:47 AM

The overall addict figures did go up a little, but never reached the levels everyone had first predicted they would.
Besides, what pisses people off, isn't the fact that someone takes drugs. That's their own business, and most couldn't care less.
It's the things they do to obtain them that makes it an issue. Burglaries, muggings, etc.
