Mr Lonely - Harmony Korine
I was wondering if anyone else was looking forward to the new Korine film coming out...it's been such a long wait for something new from him to surface, I'm starting to get very excited.
For me, Harmony is an absolute genius, who's kinda out there on his own in cinema, let the worship begin! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister_Lonely |
Very interested to see this; Julien Donkey Boy is pretty much my favourite film and Gummo was intensely amazing and psychedelic as well (in a grim, bleak, mesmerising way)
EDIT: just read the wiki piece. sounds fucking tremendous |
I want to see a Harmony Korine film where he ends up being pushed into a tub of boiling lard by an angry rhino.

Fool. |

Maybe, but who's the bigger fool - he who is fooled, or he who points out the fool, or the fool who....ah, I give up. I have no idea what I'm talking about. I really liked "Julian Donkey Boy". His new one sounds very bizarre on paper....I'll certainly check it out when it hits the UK. |

So by now agreeing that you like his films, it's pretty obvious that you are the fool. Either way, I think this films gonna push his work into a new and great direction, and hopefully a more prolific one. |

If you think I'm merely a fool, try spending an evening drinking with me...actually, talking of foolishness, what could be more "foolish" that attempting to make a film based on picking real-life fights with random strangers? From what I recall, Harmony actually had filmed a couple of fights before stopping the project. Could you imagine actually sitting through a film of real fights? |
It sounds like the sort of movie that I'd enjoy, or certainly the sort of life that I'd like to live.

Why is a good film only defined by what you can imagine as good or bad. I actually think that that film could have been quite beautiful, I'm sure some elements are quite amazing. Why would you define this concept a foolish? It's only that the idea scares you, that you think it's stupid. Within that project, apparently Harmony was quite fucked up, on drugs and in a bad place, I think it's totally fascinating what a film maker will push himself to do, even if it involves having the shit kicked out of him. Apparently some of the footage will one day be released... |
I deliberately put "foolish" in speech marks, as I'd imagine that would be the general consensus regarding this particular project. I certainly don't feel threatened/scared by this idea, as it happens, but I'd certainly feel a bit odd at watching such footage. I am of course aware of the hypocrisy of liking stylised/theatrical violence and being weirded out by seeing real violence on screen. As for you first question, well, opinions of good and bad films are of course highly subjective, mine included. What I imagine to be good/bad/indifferent may or may not vary with you.
EDIT: Talking of stylized violence, the murder scene in Larry Clark's "Bully" is pretty unpleasant, but also is very well filmed and acted. |
mo'fucka needs more ))<>(( if you no what da fuk i mean

Don't start getting all defensive, it was you who started with the stupid comments. Whatever dude... |
seems like an interesting storyline. have not seen a huge amount by him but will check it out for sure.
|
Looks great. He was very funny on the Letterman shows a couple of years back.
|
jon boy - what Harmony Korine stuff have you seen?
|
i'm not really a fan of his films, but i met chloe sevigny for a little while last weekend.

hm, i go to mass on tuedsays. your standards for "absolute genius" are pretty low though. he's ok. the premise sounds interesting, i'd like to see what he does with it. but fawning? i gotta see it first. Quote:
i'd pay to see that! live! Quote:
was she sporting cumstains on her dress? |
not this time, but she was really nice...even though i'm sure i got some vgstds from her.

"You must spread more Benjamins around before giving the big holla to the man like !@$%!. Word is bond".
|
benjamins is so 1998. you might as well have said 'duckets'
|
I know, val-holla-ing. My street talk is so, you know, uncool daddio. Your "vgstd" thing has left me totally bamboozled.
|
it's vincent gallo stds is all.
and i say daddyo, but it's more of a revival of an awesome term. benjamins is so....puff daddy. |
I should have thought about the wackness of the Diddy before using "benjamins".
Where did you meet Chloe S - was it at some sort of film/art event? |
gang gang dance played at a bar in town last weekend and she was there. she also came into the vintage clothing store that's the sister store to the vintage furniture store in town. my girlfriend also brought her food out.
|
Cool stuff. All this talk of Ms Sevigny has reminded me to go watch "Zodiac" at some point.
|
What's with the "he's ok" !@#$%!? Please explain. I wouldn't necessarily say he's genius, but you can't deny that he hasn't done interesting stuff? I've enjoyed all of his film up until now.
|
I do love Harmony Korine's work. Im really looking forward to this.
|
glad to see diego luna is in the movie

yeah, he's ok means he's ok. sorta. see, i found julian donkey boy unfuckingwatchable. i don't care if werner herzog is in it. a stupid fucking boring sleeper. there, i've said it. i tried watching it when i was going up the "dogma" films, 1,2,3... donkey ass is 5 right? or something. anyway i don't give a shit. gummo was cool. but it was cool mostly because of an excellent sountrack. the ugly kid was cool too. but the story meh. see the thing with korine is this gimmick that it's easy to decipher: take a bunch of freaky character and situations and film them in a quasi-documentary style. you know, for "realism". great. "a day in the life of a white trash family". ok... but the man is a heartless motherfucker. i'm not speaking about his personal life, for wich i couldn't give 2 fucks, but about his "artistic vision", whatever you wanna call it. kids-- i detested the screenplay as well. same semi-documentary style. my proGlem here is that, while i admit that he is not without merit, he gets excessively praised because, i dont know why, "my life is like it", you know? kinda like that shit movie "garden state" where every fucke "identifies" with that crap movie. well har kor is not so terrible, he is more interesting, sure, more indie, whatever, but as i was saying before he comes across as a cynical, heartless fuck. now im not saying the universe is all peachy & things should come out right in the end, no. but documenting a fictional freak show isn't my idea of a good screenplay. now, im saying this strictly about gummo. if we're going to compare vaguely similar stories, george washington >> gummo, in my book. |
I think that his films are probably more enjoyable to foreign viewers. Gummo being a good example of that.
It shows something that we're not very familiar with overseas, when it comes to the setting and characters in a town such as Xenia, Ohio. Critics say that his films have more style than substance, which is true in a way. I can understand your point of view though. |

I thought that it stood for very good stds, or vegetarian stds. They're called stis now, and you can get one of your choice from any loose-moralled person near you. |

You're right in general about my "flowery hippie-like names = argh" view, but funnily enough I actually like the name Harmony Korine - it sounds good. |
I totally agree that Harmony Korine is a nice name. As for his movies, I watched them all and more or less liked them, but someohow with all of them I can only memorize a few scenes and not pay that much attention to the rest of the movie. It's normally a sign that even though I wasn't offended by the movie, I wasn't particularly touched by it either.
|
I always said if I had a child I would call it Harmony (boy or girl)
|
I've seen Gummo and JDB. Gummo is really like a certain part of where I live about 25 miniutes away, I was just over there today (sorda got fooled into it) and I was thinking it's just like Gummo. The stories, ugly ass kids riding up and down the road on bikes. Pretty sure there are some glue sniffers also, mostly meth instead of glue. Anyway, I find his movies to be entertaining but not great, the scene in Gummo with the Albino woman with the pimped out car is funny and I like the music in it. He seems to be a bit full of himself to in the commentary though.

i never knew that you were the leading authority on stds...or stis. now that i know....i have this burning when i pee....and a headache when i skeet.... help? |

Did you check that the penis is there and in working order? Take the pants off, young man. I'll have a look. |
went to see this last night. i think i hated it. i wouldn't even have known it was a Korine film... it was just so... straight... also, Herzog was disappointing, seemed like a parody of his role in Julien Donkey-Boy..
I was really looking forward to this as well, his other two films being among my favourites of all time.. biggest cultural disappointment since hearing Rather Ripped for me |
