Coolness Will Be the Death of Us All

Or more likely a desire to be cool at all costs.

I'm getting increasingly tired of the way so many people I meet seem to think that a certain lack of engagement, a reluctance to believe anything or a general 'so what' mentality makes them somwhow superior to those of us 'naive' enough to think otherwise.

Damn this Generation X/Y/Z/whatever bullshit.

jon boy 06.15.2007 12:37 PM

too cool for school.

Rob Instigator 06.15.2007 12:44 PM

yeah, I hate that shit too.
I am a passionate person, and for the things I love (music, art, books, science, sports) I am a fucking JUNKIE, but for anything else I could care less.

one can not care about anything, but all you do is end up boring.

interesting people are ussually even more interesting becuse they themeslves are interested in the world around them

I have these symptoms, but I swear it's not out of a desire to be "cool".

coolness is something that has to be given and can't just be claimed. it's hard to maintain people's opinions about you when you just don't really care....

please don't get me wrong, I try to attempt a friendly "interested" demeanor, but if somebody doesn't like me (or I consider them an ass), it's really easy for me to write them off.

Inhuman 06.15.2007 12:51 PM

I laugh at people striving to be cool. They waste their money to be 'in' and do stupid shit for respect from friends often.

Last night Ian MacKaye talked about this, and how it's 'cool' not to sing along with the song at shows. He said "Don't give us that cool bullshit".

demonrail666 06.15.2007 01:00 PM

You can be cool by taking a look at the world around you and saying, fuck, I'm having none of that and so withdrawing into yourself or some kind of tiny clique.

What I increasingly see now though is people taking this option without having really seen enough to actually know whether the world is worth withdrawing from in the first place. It just seems to them like the right thing to do.

Cool is less about making consumer decisions (which are fine, no matter how 'shallow' they may be) so much as a state of mind: that nothing really matters; that everything is relative; that everything has already been done.

This is the type of 'cool' that I see all the time, and it's soooo fucking booooring.

the ikara cult 06.15.2007 02:25 PM

I think ive been unconcerned with cool for so long that being as such somehow makes me cool... so do i need to care about being cool to be uncool as i was before... or does acknowledging the existence of cool make you uncool... and so make you unconcerned with being cool... which means you are cool, and to return to your previous state of uncoolness you must care about being cool...
Thinking about coolness is vicious circle

erm...no...you're cool, but not in an uncool way.

Savage Clone 06.15.2007 02:28 PM

Regarding people singing along at shows, the problem is not about it being "cool" or "uncool." The problem is that it's super fucking annoying.

gmku 06.15.2007 02:29 PM

I was going to reply but then I thought better of it when I realized I'm too cool to care about this thread.

Perpetuating, perpetuating, perpetuating. Coolness is an executive toy.

pbradley 06.15.2007 02:33 PM

The swinging metal ball thing is indeed cool.

the ikara cult 06.15.2007 02:38 PM

Well its kinda like the ones on the outside are swinging away and passing vibrations through those in the middle, giving them sensation without movement.
Much like coolness. Or something.

Don't worry about yourself being too cool. Seriously, you have nothing to worry about.

pbradley 06.15.2007 02:40 PM

No, fuck it as a metaphor. It's just actually cool.

sarramkrop 06.15.2007 02:43 PM

I thought that only children worried about being cool. The only people who know me and think that I am cool are my nieces and my nephews, and even them take the mickey out of the music that I listen to and the clothes I wear, occasionally. I'll go with Robert Instigator's way of life.

I can appreciate the good things in life as much as the next person, even if they are a little RACIST!!!!!

Glice 06.15.2007 03:00 PM

Shut up, you Thatcherite.
THATCHERITE.

gmku 06.15.2007 03:01 PM

My momma always said, Coolness is as coolness does.

Is it Cliff Richard hour again?

She's just a devil woman, with evil on her mind
She's just a devil woman, She's going to get you from behind.

Awesome tune.

gmku 06.15.2007 03:22 PM

Yeah, the line about how she'll get you "from behind" always bothered me though.

sarramkrop 06.15.2007 03:23 PM

On a more serious note, people who seem 'out of synch' and give you that gut feeling, generally turn out to be cool folks. Demonrail is a cool guy because he is laid back and totally absorbes information, rather than aggressively dispel it. That is more my idea of cool.

Glice 06.15.2007 03:26 PM

I like tall speakers, I like small speakers, if there's music, they're wired for sound.

sarramkrop 06.15.2007 03:31 PM

Do you know what I found to be cool about you the first time I met you? I've casually noticed your shoes. I still can't help giggling histerically at how cool they were. Jesus on a horse, my racist grandfather would have loved them!

Rick was a cunt.

now Vyvyan.....he's a fucking GAWD of Kool.

COOL / CUNT

Rob Instigator 06.15.2007 03:33 PM

COOL means, unable to be fazed.

you either pretend at it, or you have that inner stillness, which allows you to deal with everything that comes without spazzing out. THAT is true cool.

Miles Davis was COOL. Beck is a fucking dingleberry on Miles davis' asscrack of cool.

floatingslowly 06.15.2007 03:41 PM

Rick was an anarchist (so I doubt he liked Thatcher)......an anarchist cunt to be more exact.

don't even get me started on the bean-eating-hippie.

pbradley 06.15.2007 03:41 PM

Coolness is defined in many different ways. Cool as in chill, cool as in good, cool as in strong willed, cool as in hip, etc. Not much debate territory. Maybe I'm just tired.

Funnily enough, shoes are the only items of clothing I can justify to myself spending in excess of 10 notes on. I'd happily schmuck over a 100 for a decent Italian cut.

Nevertheless, that is a totally Thatcherite thing to say. Thatcherite.

OK, so coolness is actually achievable via heroin addiction and playing with your back to the crowd because some of them might have the wrong amount of melanin in their skin.

Check and check.

jon boy 06.15.2007 03:53 PM

playing with your back to the crowd is what its all about.

gmku 06.15.2007 03:53 PM

Try it. It might work for you.

Savage Clone 06.15.2007 03:54 PM

I played with my back to the crowd for the first couple of years I played shows.
It wasn't because I was cool though; it was because I was terrified.
