Are you a rocker, or a rock and roller?

There's a difference. I think of rockers as more into stuff that evolved from rock and roll, especially that which maybe could be argued doesn't swing as much as rock and roll. I'm not sure I quite have my head around this enough to cite examples... Okay, here goes... Keith Richards, rock and roller... Thurston Moore, rocker... The Stooges, rock and roll... Pixies, rock...

What do you think?

floatingslowly 06.14.2007 02:08 PM

which would be the closest to "goth".

I'm soooo goth.

truncated 06.14.2007 02:09 PM

We debated this once before, the difference between "rock" and "rock & roll," but I can't be bothered to find it. Suffice it to say it got ugly, and no intelligent conclusions were reached anyhow.

I personally don't give a shit what the rest of you listen to, anyhow.

Savage Clone 06.14.2007 02:17 PM

There's not too much rolling in my rock.

Disgruntled Youth 06.14.2007 02:22 PM

But the stoned keeps rolling!!

king_buzzo 06.14.2007 03:12 PM

I'm so 'indie', man.

I guess I'm not too invested in debating the difference. I think I know the difference, and to me, it's pretty clear. I'm just curious how others think of themselves--predisposed to be rockers or rockandrollers.

Rob Instigator 06.14.2007 03:51 PM

I am a rocker

sarramkrop 06.14.2007 04:02 PM

Rocker - A person who takes rock music more seriously than it should be. Generally someone who grows into thinking that everything rocks, even when it's plain evident that they can't even catch up with the payments they need to make in order to support the numerous prole they spawned in the name of thinking that rock & roll would take care of reality.

Rock & Roller - He who is into the fun to be had with it, both while playing it or just listening to it. Generally this person will also make 'wrong' choices, but they are still determined that for as long as they keep any emotional detachment with whoever wants to spoil their fun, everything will be ok. It's a trait of this people to also act extravagant in a way that is contagious, rather than tedious or narrow minded.

Trasher02 06.14.2007 04:02 PM

I'd say I'm more rock 'n' roll. I'm really into the old rock thing lately.

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 06.14.2007 05:26 PM

Out of the choices of rocker and rock n roller, definitely he latter for me.

Rock = pompous.
RnR = fun.

That's my definition.

screamingskull 06.14.2007 05:30 PM

I'm a Rock'n'Roller

Savage Clone 06.14.2007 05:31 PM

I really have no problem with pompous.

Me neither. It's kind of a plus in a rocker.

There can be crossover though: a rock n roller can be fun and pompous, but a rocker can only be pompous.

I'm just writing words that come into my head now, you understand. No fully formed theories to be found here.

HECKLER SPRAY 06.14.2007 06:33 PM

I'm an indie wanker, probably.

Honestly, this is one of the best definitions i've heard of either.

You must spread some Elvis bootlegs around before giving it to sarramkrop again.

demonrail666 06.14.2007 06:47 PM

It all comes down to genes. Gene Vincent and Gene Simmons. To be a guy called Gene, you'd have to be a total rock n roller.

Think about it, the three ultimate symbols of boring ol' rock were called Jim: Hendrix, Page and Morrisson.

Gene or Jim. It's as simple as that.

luxinterior 06.14.2007 06:53 PM

I'm a little bit country. My brother is a little bit rock and roll.

YOu've got to be making a joke. Gene Simmons?! Fucking "rock 'n' roll?!" Dude was a total fucking pompous cunt. There was nothing rock 'n' roll about the prick. He is simply an enormous sellout. As for Hendrix, Page and Morrisson - they were all fantastic at what they do, and all more 'rock 'n' roll' than motherfucking Gene Simmons.

Rock n Roll (and thus good):

Rock (and thus VERY bad):

Sorry, when I plug in my ol' guit I think to myself "let's fucking rock" not "rock 'n roll." In fact, I still don't understand this rock/rock 'n roll distinction. The Stooges are rock 'n roll? Raw Power is the definitive rock album, if you ask me.

sarramkrop 06.15.2007 03:19 AM

There 's another crucial thing that differentiate the rocker from the rock & roller: The fact that the rocker will try to communicate something deep in an officious kind of way, while the rock & roller will throw the message in, while the fun is still going on.

Rocker example: Lou Reed since Street Hassle has been the way too self-conscious rocker who's pompous and dull.

I call it the definitive rock and roll album. But you can go ahead and call it what you want.

I'd say a rocker is someone who listens to a lot of "rock" a "rock and roller" listens to things that are in the spirit of rock and roll.

So count me in as a rock and roller. Nickelback is rock, Sonic Youth is Rock AND ROLL.
